Mountains that u see above ground formed by tectonic plates are even bigger below ground. Tectonic plates slide over eachother and all we see is the small part above ground. The biggest part is below ground, just like tent pegs... That is exactly what keeps the earth from shaking violently continuously. Without mountains the plates would all continuously bump into eachother and the earth would shake all over, all the time. Its the sliding over eachother which creates friction to stop them from moving. Result is an occasional earthquake from time to time, but that seems alot better than continuous shaking isnt it? Hope that answers your question, sorry i had to bring it up again.

You focused on something in which you have your own argumantal point with your own opinion. But deliberately ignored talking about the solid fact of the mountains having roots in which the verses of the Qur'an are clearly on that. You did not like to go the way of how and where Muhammad (SW) got that information from in the 7th century!?

The mountain serves the purpose of compensating the depth under the sea level at which the total weight per unit area is equal all around the Earth. You can have the details under the topic of Isostasy. The area around the mountains is more prone to earth quakes and volcanoes doesn't mean it has got nothing to do with balancing the earth. To make it more clear, the death rate in the hospital is much more than that of other institutions. Does this mean hospital loses the importance of giving life support ?
Can we say here in this matter that the china’s three gorges dam made the earth tilt its axis ? Therefore implying that heavy things like mountains moves and stabilises Earth ?
However, it very important to make futher research on what they say one out of all not all mountains are volcano.

And there is also Hadith that say the Earth is placed on the back of a whale and now we know that there is gravitational waves propagating and in that time there was no way of describing gravitational waves so the verse tries to compare it to the whale which moves like a whale and sperm whale actually uses waves in the deep dark water to find food and communicate.
