      I agree totally, Greg. Funny, but the harmonies on that ‘knock down the old grey wall’ line are similar to the harmonies on the line ‘oh how long will it take’ in The Beatles’ ‘Baby’s In Black’.

      exactly but its also very much a ripoff of the beatles i mean every rhythm, tone, and arrangement is so the beatles it's shameful and appalling. even the little guitar parts and the guitar solo sounds like George Harrison in the beatles in the guitar tone.

      @@lukejbarnett1 how is it shameful? badfinger were really close friends with the beatles, were signed to their label, hung out with them, and literally made music with them. it’s only natural that Pete Ham’s songwriting is influenced by the beatles. i mean hell, in a way you could almost think of Pete as another beatle. that’s what we love about badfinger. some of their work could almost be considered as an extension of the beatles while also maintaining their own originality. I know for a fact john and paul were probably kicking themselves in the ass for not writing this one. no matter what is such a brilliant song, and honestly who cares who wrote it? some bands like oasis can try so hard to emulate the beatles. the reason it came so naturally to badfinger is because that’s literally the only way they knew how to write music lmaoo

      @@MyCallofBooty it's shameful bc it's outright grand larceny, it's stealing the beatles sound and sensibility and sound of rhythm and tone. and cord progressions and singing progressions. i mean there is a reason why this song has been coined beatles esque.
      the posies started out with their first album sounding too much like the beatles simple cord structure and song structure but got out of it with their 2nd album, and impressed ringo so much he actually covered one song from that album.

    The story about Badfinger started so well with the guys making great music but what a horrendous, desperately sad ending for the 2 guys. To think they wrote one of the most successful songs of all time "Without You" and did not make a bean, due to the corrupt, cheating, rotten record company and manager, who deserved to have been strung up. It was Prince who paved the way for other artists to own their own music and not to let the record companies get rich on it. Tom and Pete wont ever be forgotten, not when we all continue to listen to their songs.

      Badfinger had every opportunity fall apart for them. They had two smash hits that were produced by Paul McCartney and George Harrison, plus were signed onto Apple along with the Beatles. Further, "Without You" should have been a much bigger hit if it had been better produced by the label. It went on to give Harry Nilsson a major smash in the 80s. The fact that they were not more heavily promoted and managed correctly is criminal. The closest thing I could think of would be if Motown Records had made the Temptations into stars and then completely destroyed the Supremes or Jackson 5 through mismanagement. This is a textbook case of talent being completely wasted by corporate malfeasance.

      +RodCornholio You may want to exclude Chicago from the mention of groups that had yet to reach a peak. By the time No Matter What was released in late 1970, Chicago had their first two hit albums, both double platinum, behind them, and about a month away from releasing their third LP, also going platinum. Of course the band's career stretched out across the 70s and 80s, but they were successful right out of the gate. l agree about the others. Boston didn't exist, and Queen and The Raspberries were just being formed, and as yet unknown in '70.

      slimshine953 (Implied) point taken that Chicago was not an unknown band in 1970 and it's challenging to whittle down conclusions about such an extraordinary group. According to the official website, they had an early career peak in 1975 and the Chicago 17 album in 1984 was their greatest commercial success. (off topic -->) Whether or not Badfinger was influenced by Chicago's sound (or vis versa) may never be known. What I failed to explicitly say is, to my limited knowledge, their sound in this song hadn't been done before by anyone else and, in my opinion, did not occur for quite sometime thereafter. Back when the music you heard was from musicians like these that had dedicated their lives to it, for better or worse, and had often paid many years of dues before they saw any success at all. Nowadays, "stars" are created on reality talent shows in a matter of weeks, given a record deal and a few formulaic songs to sing. No grinding, no learning their craft. Heck they are really more social media stars than they are music stars. I'd be willing to bet that a large percentage of them have very little, if any, actual technical music knowledge. Is this progress?

    • @lukejbarnett1
      @lukejbarnett1 Před 3 lety

      don't forget they dont' have musical talents or skills either. this is the prime and main reason why music sucks actually come to think of it. since the '00s started reality talent shows like ameican idol ruined music for everyone. its' too easy to get famous and successful nowadays. i blame the internet and american idol everyone wants to be a famous rock star but no one wants to put in the time and effort into becoming this which is so wrong. the thing that 's really wrong is that they dont' work hard for anything and never learn important thing in becoming a famous pop star.
      so we're stuck with britney spears and taylor swift and other singers and musicians who arent' that good or are horrible who make really bad music that has no value. this is why the last great music was made in the '90s.

      Ok boomers. It’s always been like that, your youth and nostalgia blind you. Can’t wait for people to be saying the same shit about today’s music in 50 years complaining about how their music was so much better. Most music has always been shameless cash grabs it’s not a new thing. Most pop music has always been shit. Just as many artists are dedicated as before and just as many artists were ass as they are today. The internet just highlights the worst of everything. Actually look for good music and you’ll find it

      why can't the kids of nowadays just admit that their music sucks and our music: '70s '80s '90s is more than twice as great?
      it's not like music can't suck for 20 years , it has. and i really doubt it will ever get to being as great as it was in the '90s. and this is not just an older person stuck in their music and unwilling to listen to nowadays music i've listened to nowadays music and 90% of it sucks.
      and is worthless and has no quality or value. i'm not being subjective it's provable that most of today's music sucks.
      this is not a taste or preference or bias thing. this is a music knowledge and instinct thing. when someone has spent their whole life carefully not casually listening to music and they are about 40 years old, they know what is good music and what is bad music.
