    Good to know that with proper care these critters can live a long and happy life. Not that I have free time for new pets that can't feed themselves, but I'm glad morphed axolotls aren't miserable and suffering by nature

    Pudge muffin is the best name! Very informative. I always thought or heard water parameters is what forces them to leave the water and in turn cause them to morph

      Pudge muffin was all I could think when I first saw them LOL! The last salamander I had was a severely underweight rehab patient that was eventually released, so I was very used to skinny sallies LOL! I used to think morphing was due to improper care and I had always heard that it was a death sentence for them. Im so glad salamander with a sign has dedicated so much time to working with these guys to show us all that thats not the case at all and they can live a very happy life! They just need a little help getting there :)

    Great video!!
    My study was in invasives, specifically invasive herps, when I was in college in Gainesville, FL. My main focus was on Osteopilus sept. and their effect on the native Hylidae. My professor was also running a sister study on the effects of RES’s muddying the gene pool of the native yellow bellies.
    So my understanding of the “negative” potential repercussions would be people releasing these morphed axolotls in areas with native tiger salamanders, potentially weakening the adaptations of tiger salamanders- though I haven’t heard of this happening yet.
    I do know that the hybrid Trachemys specimens we found were similar in that they weren’t adapted to the environment and as a result had a higher mortality rate which doesn’t bode well for native populations of T. Scripta scripta with introduced scripta elegans genes.
    So I could see concern for something like this happening, if it is even at all possible.

    Could you make a video on tank set ups for morphed axolotls? We have an axolotl that is currently morphing and I’m completely lost on how to set up a proper home for it.

    Also, the axolotl x tiger salamander hybrids will not be able to breed like an axolotl on the F1 generation, not sure yet if the F2 generation will breed like axolotls or tiger salamanders

    the recent increase in the morph rates of axolotls is most likely due to interspecific hybridization of A. andersoni x axolotls & not due to tiger salamander DNA in axolotls

  • @rdnkenki

    I think it's cool

  • @teckendrums
    @teckendrums Před 3 měsíci +1

    so these are crossbreeds between tigersalamanders and axolotls? but the morphing link is not linked to albino gen?

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Mixing with a tiger salamander doesn’t guarantee an albino axolotl, but it does in theory provide more chance for it. These offspring now have tiger salamander DNA within them, so when they go on to breed with other axoltols, they are now passing this DNA along down the line

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  Před 3 měsíci +18

      This is another misconception! There we don’t truly know enough about their lifespan yet to say just how long they live since their care and what we know about them is relatively new information, but it is being shown that with the proper care and the environment to thrive, naturally morphed axolotls are actually very capable of living decently long lifespans! There are people with morphed axolotl that are around a decade old!

    • @ginodemoor
      @ginodemoor Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@zareptiles i have seen a website that is against promoting morphed axolotls. Axolotls that have ofspring that morph to adulthood should be reported to the breeder. And the breeding pair should be stopt breeding with.
