  • In this video I demonstrate how to remove the coil packs without the special puller removal tool and replace the spark plugs in 10 minutes. Here I use a flat blade screwdriver. This is not the manufactures recommended method, so should only be used if absolutely necessary. Damage can occur to the coil packs if removed incorrectly. Caution also needs to be taken to not damage the wiring.
When replacing the spark plugs, always inspect the old plugs of unusual wear before fitting the new ones. New plugs should be inspected for any signs of damage before fitting. New plugs come with the gap already set, so it's not necessary to re-gap them unless you think they need to be checked or if one looks different to the others. Obviously there is no harm in checking the gap if you wish and should be done as best practice.
A torque wrench should be used to ensure the spark plugs are correctly tightened. under tightening could lead to misfires, low compression, lack of power or the plug could become completely loose. Over tightening could be worse, as you could damage the thread in the cylinder head. Modern vehicles have aluminium cylinder heads so can be damaged easily.
Most spark plugs, the tightening torque is between 20 - 30Nm. Always check the manufactures recommendation.
    30Nm really isn't a lot, wheel bolts are generally around 120Nm +.. That's 4 times tighter...
This process will be applicable to Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles with the 1.4 and 1.6 engine between 2009 - 2016. This engine code was CGG 2013 MY VW Polo

Thank you for this video...everyone else keeps showing the 2.0 plus engines with the Hiden spark plugs. This is the engine I have. Thumbs up for the screwdriver hack as I don't have the tool. Very easy video to follow. Cheers

Thanks for the great video. I've done spark plug changes many years ago but have had years of complex diesels and lease cars (not allowed to work on them). Now I have a simple Ibiza 1.4 as a runaround I am actually looking forward to doing my own maintenance again.

I pulled out the spark plug coil pack and there's a rubber bit that's stayed stick to the spark plug. What do I do?
    Help me please!

Sounds like the end of the coil pack has broken off. Best to try a long thin screwdriver and some wd40 to loosen the rubber and then some long nosed pliers or a pick to hook the rubber out. Good luck 🤞🏼

    • @GarageTechAutomotive

About 60000km / 40000miles or every 6 years is the typical change interval

Check to make sure the coil packs are pushed in correctly and the connectors are on right. If they are ok I’d check the spark tips, have they got the correct gap. If all looks ok you could have damaged a coil pack when removing it.
