How Crystal Maiden's Freezing Field Actually Works

  • In this video I go over some aspects of Crystal Maiden's Freezing Field that I thought might not be as well known, or that I just didn't know about. The spell has some interesting mechanics to it that you don't necessarily need to know to use it efficiently, but knowing them could give you an advantage in certain cases, so that's why I had an interest in it.
    Hopefully you learn something new with me :3

    I wanted to address a good question a lot of people brought up which was - does the ice explosion starting location depend on the way Crystal Maiden is facing? And the answer is, no. It will always start in the northeast segment.

    correct me if i am wrong but this would mean CM is slightly stronger on radiant as u will be coming from the bottom left side of the map therefore landing your damage on the first quadrant compared to CM on dire as u will be coming from the top right, it will take until the 3rd quadrant to actually land the icicles on an enemy. its a miniscule advantage though all things considered

    Man i remember reading all about the spell back in dota 1, seems it hasnt changed much.
    Something interesting was that exposions that spawn close to her or in the axis lines, the aoe will hit other cuadrants, thats why next to cm deals so much damage, but also the axis lines are super dangerous compared to the 45°degree lines

    • @EebstertheGreat
      @EebstertheGreat Před rokem

      It actually doesn't matter. It might seem like there should be edge effects near the coordinate axes, but the overlap between quadrants exactly cancels out the decreased chance of hitting near the edge from the other side. I'm not sure I'm explaining it well, but I could probably demonstrate with a picture. Unless you're tracking things down to a fraction of a second, it doesn't matter whether targets are a multiple of 90° from CM.
      The reason explosions hit near CM more than far away is because of the way random numbers were generated for the spell. At least in DotA 1, it worked like this. First, a random distance r was chosen uniformly between r_min and r_max (whatever those minimum and maximum distances were). Then, a random angle θ was chosen uniformly between 0 and 360°. Then the comet fell at position (r,θ) (in polar coordinates, centered on CM).
      This means that any given distance from CM has roughly the same number of comets. So like, you would expect to see as many comets 300-400 distance from CM as 600-700 distance on average. But that outer ring is much larger than the inner ring, so comets are effectively concentrated much more closer to CM. I don't know if this was deliberate or accidental, but it means you will tend to take more damage if you are relatively close to CM than if you are farther away. At least in DotA 1 anyway; I'm not actually sure how it works in Dota 2.

  • @jrbudoybudoy

  • @lightknightgames
    @lightknightgames Před rokem +1

    I'm pretty sure your description of the spawn locations is incorrect, on the basis that there was multiple occurences of the 3rd icicle being in the southeast quadrant, and mostly the southwest. But when the southeast was selected, the 2nd icicle appeared very close to the end of the northwest quadrant.
    So I believe it is choosing to add radians between a threshold of approximately 90 - to ~120.
    This would ensure that you can't get 3 icicles very near, but double icicles is reasonably possible.
    It also makes sense because in most methods of mathematics, radians are calculated as east = 0degrees. And North = 90 etc.

    I think aghanim's scepter doesn't add a new aura, the spell itself is an aura. Because heroes that enter the ult radius get slowed instantly, no matter if they got hit by the explosion or not.

  • @macchiato_1881
    @macchiato_1881 Před rokem +4

    The Aghanim's scepter one is a general case. I think the game first checks for whether you have an Aghs or not in your inventory. Then it applies an upgrade to your spell at the time of casting. So in theory, Aghs upgrade still works if you cast ulti then backpack it while ulti is channeling to swap out for a refresher or some shit(not that you'd want to anymore since Aghs blessing is a thing now).

    • @hi-i-am-atan
      @hi-i-am-atan Před rokem

      nah the entire functionality of agh's is that there's a specific modifier ( as in, the base class of all buffs and debuffs - item stats work by applying an invisible passive to your hero while they're equipped ) property that just says if the modifier counts as an agh's buff or not. the agh's upgrades are handled by the spells themselves, and subsequently there's some spells that update the moment you equip agh's and some that just check if you have agh's at the start of their effect
      there's no real consistency to it, and this goes for shard ( which actually works in the exact same way, just with a different modifier property ) and talents as well

    • @macchiato_1881

    As a CM main, blink, ghost, and shadow amulet are already core items to me. I always prioritize amulet especially when there's no cc. If there is then it's okay but you need proper positioning. I played pos 4 and 5, it brought me up to divine rank. Mind you, I'm at a sea server where it's very toxic and hard to rank up especially support playets.

    as a supp main i kinda noticed the clockwise pattern before but never actually tested it, this is huge, feel like if youre on dire then youre kinda forced to dive a bit to get that North East hit which isnt cool

    👏👏 freezing field meta 💯

  • @arturhisamutdinov9285

    There's also a moment with slow effect.
    It's applied on whole AoE with start of casting. It is not very useful to cast and immediately cancel your ult in real games, but in some cases this simple trick can help your team with making some kills.

      @EebstertheGreat Před rokem +1

      The slow now lasts for the entire duration of the spell. (It used to only last 1 second.) It gets applied as soon as the spell is cast and reapplied to all units in the 810 AoE every 0.1 seconds. The slow lasts for 1 second, which means after an enemy leaves the AoE, or after casting is cancelled, the slow will persist for a further 0.9-1.0 seconds. It's actually a very powerful slow, but yeah, the linger duration isn't too long.

      @zzadrianzz  Před rokem

      Yes, it'll always start in the northeast segment camera wise, no matter which way CM is facing.
