Me too! I saw this a number of times happening at my university. Most international students didn't know the concept of Pfand and would throw away their empty bottles.

For those who don’t know. The receipt can be used as a coupon, and sometimes it can be cashed out at a counter in the stores.
I am german and I sooooo hate the ridiculous race and panic mode at the checkout... I feel like everybody is killing me because I need more than 5 seconds to pack my stuff.

So I got "trapped" in an Edeka this summer not understanding how to get out of the self checkout section. 😂 I tried to look casual as I called someone to find out I had to scan my reciept to exit.
what? eh? wtf? never heard of that honestly . but ive not been in an edeka there was self checkout scaning stuff in rewe and you simply scaned the items on the machine yourself and put the money in afterwards , then you left . i dont know about that scan reciept thing , wat? i am german and lived my whole live in germany lol wtf? never heard of reciept scanning and i am 27
@@Wolf-fighter actually this is just a new security measure. You can't always have security or staff looking that most people are honest. If during "Inventur" theft is more of a problem, some stores might opt to verify that you did purchase sth. I've been to one such store before, don't think it was a Rewe. I actually believe that this is way more common in the US and maybe China, where there is no staff at the store...Amazon does that at some of their stores.
Be cool and take your own bag shopping. You're not only cool, you're also German.

Oh the grocery bag thing has been the same here in California as in Germany for a few years now. Sometimes they will bag for you, but it is faster if you bag your own, which I prefer. Every once in a while I will get some fat Karen in front of me that doesn't bag and has a ton of groceries, and grrrr, but most people bag their own. Covid put a damper on things, 'cause you couldn't bring your own bags, 'cause germs, so I was just throwing my bare groceries back in the cart and then I would transfer them to a box in my car trunk which made it easier to bring groceries into the house.

We have the same situation with cans and bottles in Oregon. 10 cents. My kiddo gets excited when he gets money for cans.

Really? When I was there (Finland), the cashier was way slower or had at least separate places, so you can pack your groceries without anxiety - hahaha ha haaah... (*cries)
