While traveling the country for more than 2 weeks I discovered a new side of the island almost every day. I have been in Sri Lanka for a video production and got to see and experience a lot in a comparably short amount of time.
Accompanied by local guides and wildlife experts I visited several places all over the country: from Colombo through the center to the north-east, afterwards I flew back and went to the south coast and continued to Yala as well as the highlands in Kandy. Hey, man! I am preparing myself for a travel to Siri Lanka by myself as a backpacker, are food or accomodation too expensive, in your point of view?
Compared to EU or American,Sri lankan food and accommodation are very very cheap.But little more expensive than India.
how much do you think it would cost in dollars for a comfortable trip for 1-2 weeks?
Depends on the places you hope to visit and hotels you stay,It can be either 100$ a day(fairly good services with all expenses) or 300$ a day(more luxurious) If you're on budget,Use local transport and stay at normal hotels,100$ is more than enough for a day.
Even you can manage with 50$ per day,if you use local transport(busses,tuk tuks and trains) with normal hotels.

It is more or less like India. Nothing unique to be seen. What is the niche of country which is not available than any other??? What is the pulling factor for tourists to visit Sri Lanka??? We cannot go to any other country to see the Vellore Golden temple or Thirupathi, the world riches temple or Taj Mahal. If we want to Eiffel Tower, we have to go to Paris, Buckingham palace is only in England, Great Wall of China is only in Beijing, the highest Murugan statue and Tallest Twin Tower is only in Malaysia, Colleseum in Rome.
