  • How we built our stormshelter with Wattle & Daub plus Cob. Only bamboo, rebar, mud, sand and straw. Needs a cement plaster to be waterproofed. Easy, cheap and strong. A lot of fun as well. 1-2 persons can sleep in it. It is a guestroom as well.

That's awesome. I built a double wattle wall daub hut so between the walls there is hay clay slip insulation also. I wanted to do a dome next - so thanks.

    Did you ever
    try making
    Cobb shoes ? 🤭

Unfortunately, this will not last long under tropical rain. I built my mud home but also waterproofed it using techniques from China and Morocco. There are ways to waterproof the outer surface naturally so that this will last 100+ years 😊

Hi there, would you be so kind as to explain the waterproofing methods you used?

@newolde1 the tadelakt technique on top of lime plaster base. For earthen floors i use tung oil

How about rain? Can the wall withstand it? Greeting from Malaysia

No, it cant. But there are ways of naturally waterproofing cob like lime tadelakt plaster that I used in my home!

Yes I made a lime plaster - I think I mixed in one bag of lime cement but then the rest was just lime and then just threw it on the walls until it is covered.

No. No problem there, only at the cob dome

you can add in horse manure to make sure the clay doesn't crack - the horse digest the straw partially so the fine bits of straw in the manure then binds the clay well.
