- Sir Mekere Morauta's passing was announced late yesterday on social media.
The former Prime Minister is the second to have passed away since Sir Bill Skate in 2006.
Sir Mekere's life in the public sector began as a research officer with the Department of Labour.
He later reformed the financial banking sector and strengthened political party governance.
The impact of his work is far-reaching both here and in the Pacific.
This is tonight's A CLOSER LOOK at the life of Sir Mekere Morauta, the former Prime Minister and current Member for Moresby Northwest at the time of his passing.
Rest in Peace Sir Mekere. You were the man my father told me about when I was 7 years old who would rescue our economy and save us from financial ruin and inflation. We your people love you and miss you so very dearly. Whoever will try to replace you will have some very big shoes to fill😢😢
My dad moved to PNG in the 60s and has since lived there. He says only Sir Mekere was a different breed from the other Prime Ministers.
Superfunds in PNG are today thriving successfully due to policy reforms initiated and implemented by Sir Mekere Morauta.
Many do not know how much you did for Papua New Guinea Sir Mekere....your selfless and quiet but determined effort will pay positive dividends for PNG generations to come...Rest in Peace Sir...
