      That's how we used to scrag springs after they'd been coiled and heat treated, except we used an air hammer as it was a bit more forgiving than a hydraulic press

    Note the difference between how the Cast Caliper explodes, while the Machined Piston did not. Quality of metals fascinates me. How different processes (casting, forging, machining billet) affect the structural integrity. The muffler did the squishy foldy, neat! Cheers!

      Well it isn’t always about quality though, for some things you don’t want to get squished. Such as round things like ball bearings and brake disks. If they bend that can hurt their effectiveness, especially at the high speeds they move in. It takes a lot more force to shatter a harder metal than to squish a softer one

      It's not at all about quality, it's about the type of metals. Some, by the nature of their applications, need different characteristics.

      Not sure about that; the forged stuff was steel, but I'm pretty sure the cast stuff was all zinc or aluminum.

      Forged is generally a bit stronger, due to it having its grain correctly aligned whereas a cast/billet piston does not. Of course materials will differ, though.

      Billet means it was cut from a single piece of material not forged or cast. The first piston could have started out as a round or square piece of stock and was machined to that shape.

    That exhaust silencer baffle submitted most gracefully into a very tidy package. One feels that with a suitable bung and an airline it might simply be inflated back into its original form.

      using air to inflate it is a recipe for a bomb. it would be feasible to use pressurized water to reinflate it though. water is incompressible so there is no stored up energy.

    Coil springs get surprisingly hot when compressed. Might be kind of neat to point a temp reader at some of the things you are pressing.

    I work with cast aluminum parts in my industry all the time. It's horribly weak and brittle, but it's light and cheap, so it's a popular material choice.

    'Think it'd be really chill to have a serial data output from the force meter plotting a chart out, just below the LCD readout in the upper right hand corner. Then you could see the trend in comparison between the forgeed and the billet pistons. ;)

    Also, the compression of the van spring was tense for me. I was just waiting for it to slip and go thru something.
