    Worst parts about running?
    Getting up at 04:30 every day to run and dealing with your spouse's frustration at waking her up.
    Sweating buckets and soaking the screen of your mobile phone so that you can't tap the screen, can't use the fingerprint scanner and can't use the camera.
    Carrying empty gel packets in your back pocket (to dispose of when you find a trash can), forgetting them in said back pocket and re-discovering them after laundry.
    Having to deal with your spouse's judgement at the fact that you own more pairs of shoes than she does.
    Accidentally waking up your pets on the way out to a run and then leaving your family to deal with the aftermath (ok, ok, this can be hilarious too) 😜.
    Seriously. I can keep going. I've got shitloads of these........

    When I first got my hydration pack, I thought somebody was running or riding an ATV behind me. I kept looking back. Chaffing is the worst. You can never be lubed to much, can you? I used to carry a stick with me and knock down the webs when I would run this small trail close to my house. I stick to the wider trail now and it isn't so bad with the spiders. Just like recently, I don't enjoy running through 'creeks' on a trail. I've done it with snow also and it just takes so long to get those shoes dry. I also hate passing ATVs on the trail I run. Sometimes they don't slow down. I could go on but I digress. :) LOL!!! Enjoy the long weekend John.

    Round 2.
    Going to the gym and feeling emasculated in front of the rest of the jocks in there because you're working on your stabilizer muscles in your hips, knees and ankles.
    Having to train yourself to go to the bathroom at ungodly hours because there's no way you're showing up for a run with a, shall we say, 'full lower intestine'.
    Carrying wet-wipes/tissues with you on all runs because you had that 'accident' that one time.
    Becoming proficient in some of the weirdest math known to man (sooooo, my sweat rate is W, my gel packs contain X calories, my drink powder contains Y calories and electrolytes - therefore I need Z milliliters of water for ever hour I run).
    Getting to the trail head at 04:00, realizing you've forgotten your head torch. Deciding to run anyway. Falling on your ass multiple times.
    Going into waaaaaaay too much analytical depth when deciding to buy t-shirts, shorts, socks, shoes and almost every other piece of apparel. Then buying said apparel and spending just as much time wondering whether you made the right purchase decision. Doing it all again next month.
    Turning the trunk of your car into a makeshift bar, pharmacy, supermarket, apparel outlet and long-term storage locker.
    Like I said - I could go on forever.

    Right. If it's going to be an 8 or 10 hour race, not in the summer, start it at 10 am. If it's going to be a 30 hour, why not start any time. E.g., noon.

    It's been years since I've had nails on my two outer toes on my left foot...
    Both bigtoe nails are partially blue.
    Chaffing ?
    Learnt to handle that in the army and have never had a problem since, no matter clothing or climate.
    Hmmm..., I remember once I was training, runnning dressed in a netting shirt (it was hot..., above 15 degr. C !) with my rifle hanging on my back.
    After the run people stared at me as If I was a monster.
    Blod dripping from me as all skin was rubbed of my back.
    Didn't notice any pain, just some discomfort, until I tried to remove the shirt.
    I still remember the shower after. PAIN !!! :-D
    I cant stand gear that makes noises !
    I always have everything compressed and removes all air from blatters and softflasks.

    Omg, tears in my eyes, this was great. Ninja rubs and early mornings suck, but I really love eating during ultras. I housed an Entemanns Danish during my last race, right after the fried chicken. As for tripping, I yardsale regularly- my hiking nickname was Flying Squirrel, because my buddies though it would be safer if I wore one of those flying wind suits. 😆 Something else I dislike... always wanting to upgrade gear. Much of my horse equipment is over 20 years old. Yet after 3 months using that vest/ bra/ shoes/ socks etc, I think it might be best if I get that newer model... gotta say though, those new bras might just end ninja rubs! 😆

      @@motivationtheoryrunning my sports bra functioned great during training... but 32 miles in insane heat was apparently too much. Getting into that shower was one of those moments in a runners journey... like losing a toenail or having to dive off trail to fertilize the shrubbery. 😆

    Picking races to do I hate it but love it at the same time . Try to balance have enough training to do good on race day . I have a races all the way to January 2022 then I not racing till June just going to train starting February. Got a 50 miler on the 18th , a 50k October 2nd , JJ100 October 30, November a 1/2 marathon , December the Dallas 50k then bandera 100k in January. Then a 131 mile road bike race in June 4th then a 50k the next weekend then a 100k at MT Hood then after that I am not sure kind waiting to see if I get into a few lottery's. It took me weeks and weeks to figure this all out I keep on changing my mind 🤣🤣. Also trying to balance not doing to much with out the fear of missing out.

    after listening to all those points of things you do not like and i normally don`t experience ( except 3 or 4 black toenails since 1974) i come to the conclusion, that maybe i am no ultra runner after all.
    So what is your definition of an ultra runner, or what would qualify me to advance from an old fashioned runner to an ultra runner?

    • @motivationtheoryrunning
      @motivationtheoryrunning  Před 2 lety

      You have never gotten up early ever to run, ever have to eat in ultra races, ever tripped on a trail, run into a spider web, ever had to listen to sloshing of water bottles, run up lots of vert??? It was a humorous video about the follies of running on trails and ultra races….not that serious…

    • @thomasfritz2698
      @thomasfritz2698 Před 2 lety +1

      @@motivationtheoryrunning actually i get up at 4:40 every morning (in deep winter at 5:10) and i love it to be outside, when the sun rises. I have fallen on the road twice ( 1985 on a 20 mile run at mile 5, and 1986 about 10 days before a marathon race and it took 2 hours to get all the small gravel out of my knee and hands, and i had put my foot in a pothole to force me to fall) , not on trails. I never experienced spider webs in my life so far. I run with small water bottles in a flip belt. They make no noise. Sometimes i carry a handheld, which i carry horizontally, and it makes no noise as well. I pretty much eat at any given time during the day, also when i run. I eat simple self prepared food, which goes well. Yes it took me some time, to find the perfect rhythm, and i got it now up to 12 hour runs. I don`t do any longer runs than 14 hours any more. At my age i need to sleep at night. I live in the mountains. The only way not to run up or down is on a track, which i almost never do. I love to go out the door and run....that still leaves my question unanswered: What is the difference between a runner and an ultra runner?

    • @motivationtheoryrunning
      @motivationtheoryrunning  Před 2 lety

      Runner is the higher level category…ultra runner is a sub category, like sprinter, marathoner…I used ultramarathon as the example because if I say runner an person who runs 3 miles a day on the roads these things may not relate….it’s how CZcams works…you have to make videos that relate to the target audience
