#TheLegendofBum-Bo - Hry
Bumbo want coin!
[much cruder body related iconography]
~wheeze~
From what i heard it could also do with a bit more patching.
Nine months later it could use more patching
I dig the art style
I freaking love the sound track I’ve dumped a lot of time in and haven’t gotten board of it yet but music is certainly subjective.
As a HUGE fan of Edmund Mcmillen games... I have to say this feels sub par. Its disappointing that this game is just a match 3 game with some flourishes. There are so many match 3 games that you'd be hard pressed to do something truly different at this point. The cardboard aesthetic is dull. While I realize that the BoI universe does have its fair share of potty humor, its just annoying to see a game that basically revolves around it.
Also why do people keep saying it has a deck building element? There isn't a deck. You get to slot and use spells from a randomized pool. You never create a deck, shuffle a deck, draw from a deck, or thin a deck. Its not a deck builder.
match 4. And the game is actually really good! lots of replay value, and im sure they´ll add tons of stuff along the way.
emretson Oops! Yeah I meant 4. I do want to like it for sure and really do hope for more added content.
I think he's hate in on the poo a pee a little too much but hopefully they can fix the problems he brought up in later versions of the game.
Point of preference. I for one am glad he pointed out how prevalent it is to the game as I find such things off putting and in no way humorous. While at the same time, I have a few friends that might pick this up for the crude humor alone. To each their own.
I feel like it's less of a bias against poo/pee itself and more of a disinterest in how ill fit suited it is for this particular game. The (even cruder) visuals worked for Binding of Isaac where they simply don't work for Bumbo.
Creative animations, weird environments, and speedy realtime gameplay went a long way for both emphasizing the intrigue and curbing the attention of Isaac's visceral visuals, wheras Bumbo forces you to ponder over static drawings of shit in murky brown-flavored dungeons. I fail to see an audience who would find this visually interesting.
The Binding of Isaac's aesthetic seems artful, wheras Bumbo just seems like Edmund McMillen being Edmund Mcillen. Which is fine. This kinda visual humor is his thing. Doesn't mean it's infallable.
This game is super fun but it does need a few updates as it's kind of unpolished in parts.
You say it's a deckbuilding game but there is no deckbuilding in this game at all.
There, to some degree, is. You build your equipment.
That's not deck building. Is FTL a deck building game? Is Diablo?
@@Qril That's really reaching.
I got this game for the piss and shit man it’s my jam
Game is cool, but amazed at how unfinished and how Edmund rushed it out. It easily needs at least another months work to get it working properly.
Sounds utterly garbage, and yet I've had a connection with binding for nigh on 7 years, now. Sigh.
if you can mind the poop, pee, stink, and gore from Binding of Isaac then this is actually nothing in comparison.
Nice review. Sounds like it has the Binding of Isaac/Edmund McMillan signature hallmarks:
- The game doesn't tell you shit
- The game is full of actual shit
- Sometimes, the game will just screw you over
So, soft pass.
The mixed reviews baffle me. I've seen people defend more expensive, buggier games by teams of talented people, but this game by 2 people and tested by like 20 is just getting the real brown end of the stick for lack of polish. Maybe everyone has forgotten about the Flash version of Binding of Isaac. The gameplay and aesthetic are worth asking price alone; not to mention the attentive support of developers who are clearly deeply invested in the project.
The flash version of Isaac still worked, BumBo isn't finished. I really like Ed and his games, and I kinda like Bumbo, but they should really have pushed back the release when they lost power for a week. And I'm not even sure that week would be enough, there's a LOT to fix. At its best the game feels like Into the Breach, which is great, but ItB had perfect information.
BumBo doesn't have that, worse, as it is it's like if enemies in ItB or Slay the Spire would do something other that what they announced half of the time, and you don't know if it's a bug or a feature.
The game is easy enough at first that you don't notice it, but after finishing it a first time it gets harder, and each thing like that become very important.
That shield that says it blocks attackerS and announce that you're protected for a wave of attack? It blocked only one attack, now you're dead.
That syringe that's supposed to make your powers hit harder? Maybe it's random, maybe some spells are locked at lower damage (even if you can still select them), or maybe it's just bugged, but it had no effect. And those precious coins you could have used for something useful are now gone.
That enemy has a vein on its head? It'll move twice. The same enemy without the vein? Two moves also. Too bad, you should have predicted that, now you dead.
That boss you're seeing for the first time? Well I hope you're not trying to hit hard before healing, because it has a secret counter mechanic that isn't anywhere else in the game and isn't telegraphed. Or maybe it's just a bug that skipped to the end of your turn, wouldn't be the first time, WHO KNOWS!
For a game that relies heavily on strategy, this kind of stuff just isn't acceptable, and it's EVERYWHERE. Into the Breach was a mostly-two-people team too, and they made sure everything was perfect before release. Forgiving those errors because Ed and James aren't Ubisoft isn't helping anyone.
I'm not saying you should shout at Ed on twitter or in steam forums, but the game has real issues that need to be fixed so it can be even better.
And for the reviews, if they really wanted good scores, they should have waited before release, the press won't go back to a game two weeks after release because they fixed some stuff. But I don't think they need those reviews anyways, the game is apparently already successful enough (which is even weirder to me, they really had no obligation to stick to their release date).
I think it's because it's a "finished" game.
Early Access or Beta trial then they'd get less knocks but a professional releasing it in this state is asking for trouble.
@Lilith does stuff
More meant he knew it wasn't release ready and did it anyway.
It's not like he's a first time developer who didn't understand the concept of a limited beta to iron out problems..
@Lilith does stuff Ed McMillen has been making game for 20 years. Indie doesn't mean "not professional", he's not a amateur releasing his games on steam and hoping they'll sell. He made a mistake thinking pushing back the release would anger people, he even admitted this. But he also has an image to preserve, and as an indie, people trusting him is important, so releasing a game in an unfinished state is an issue.
They're hard at work on fixing the game and listening to the community, so I'm sure it'll be fine, but another indie with less reputation and more reliant on reviews would have been forgotten already in a similar position.
That's partly why I think using the "it's a small team" excuse isn't good here. It's a small team, sure, but they know they can rely on their community, they didn't need good reviews and their focus was giving their existing fans what they wanted. They're still in a privileged position, and even some bigger teams don't have that luxury.
They know what they're doing, people can still criticize them when they're making mistake, because they should correct them. There's no point in defending them like they're underdogs.
@Lilith does stuff
I think you're mixing stuff up. First, McMillen isn't involved with Meat Boy anymore, he's no loger part of Team Meat. I don't know how Tommy Refenes and the new Team Meat people are doing, but I'm sure Edmund is very fine financially. Team Meat didn't sell off Meat Boy to Epic, it's just a one time deal. And Mew Genics died a while back then.
Ouroboros, which has been scrapped, became The End is Nigh, and it did well enough and also ended up in a weekly free game for the EGS. Tyler Glaiel (who's been prototyping the "new" Mew Genics) said on twitter that the deal was pretty good too.
For Isaac, I'm sure most of the issues come down to Nicalis' management, Ed has done what he could here. I'm sure the game is still doing well enough. But basically I don't think it was his main project at all, since he was working on Four Souls and BumBo.
So I REALLY don't think there was any rush, at least from Edmund's side, to put out BumBo as soon as possible. They did lost power for a week which prevented them to work on the game, and that almost made them push back the release, but as he said, since the game was already in preorder, he didn't want to change the date.
I don't even think there is a "studio" per se.
This feels like one of those "purely objective" parody reviews. What did you like? What didn't you like? What kind of players would appreciate the elements in this game? What kind of player would consider the negatives a deal breaker?
What are you talking about? He didn’t like the randomness to an extent. He also didn’t like the music or aesthetics. People who don’t like getting killed by rng won’t like this game. People who like puzzles, roguelikes, and Ed likely will like the game
The "deck building by way of matching puzzles" system looks really fun, but the game itself doesn't look interesting. Are there any other games with this system?
I know a game called You must build a boat and a certai. Switch game are similar to this
There is no deck building in this game.
Puzzle Quest. Except instead of a roguelite, it's an RPG
That isn't deckbuilding at all. It's just match x tiles to get x points so you can use attack x
You just told us what it was not if its good or not how is that a review?
It's for isaac fans, unapologetic as ever and better for it.
Doesn't seem very fun...
Kinda sad that people didn't enjoy this as much as the other games. Yes It's different but it's Kinda the same.
Isaacfess what other games? Isaac? It’s not similar to that at all
Bare in mind the game has only been out 2 days. Give it time, im sure there will be dlc
I meant similarish in the style of doing "runs" and getting random items.
Exactly.
Thanks for review. I have over 500 games on steam but I just couldn't get into this. This is the only game I refunded
Oh noes, icky poopy and pee-pee! Run AWAY and scream for mommy!
poop :P
The gameplay is so boring
These guys are going the "super meat boy" route of making new things no one wanted or asked for
Checks out, since it's the same core dev, and it worked well for both SMB and Isaac.
What kinda name is "Bum-Bo", though..? 😂
Bumbo is a familiar in tboi
@@mrslinkydragon9910 What's a "tboi"..?
@@paradoxacres1063 the binding of isaac (tboi)
@@mrslinkydragon9910 Ah, OK. Thanks!
@@mrslinkydragon9910
But I thought the Bum-bo familiar was added to Binding of Isaac _AFTER_ Bum-bo was created for the Bum-bo game (the character of Bum-bo was originally invented for it’s own game). No??
woah!!! I did it!!!! I left the first comment!!!!!! this is a momentous occasion. Id like to thank my family, my friends, and most importantly, the Escapist.
Ironically saying first is worse than just saying it
With a price of $15, I wonder if this is going to be full of 'time saving' microtransactions
Todo McGillicutty have you ever played binding of Isaac? It’s the same developer, and he’s very against that
The day Edmund mcMillen uses microtransactions will be the day the world ends.
Trust me, zero microtransactions ;)
"Time saving"? What do you mean?
@@vedal1358
That’s the entire point of most micro transactions. Derp. They are “pay-to-win.”
i.e. You want that overpowered sword that can kill any trash enemy in 2 hits and easily destroy even the super hard end game bosses? Well, you can grind in game for 6 months to get enough gold for that sweet sword, _OR_ you can buy it on day one with real world money in a micro transaction, wherein you end up easily demolishing the game and spending only a mere fraction of the time playing it than you normally would have otherwise.
