Sweden have been neutral since 1814 so it's over 200 years, but having a neighbor as Russia makes you think about tradition.
Ironically, they became neutral as a result of losing a war with Russia and that delivered them 200 years of peace, covering two world wars. Even if NATO membership manages to keep them out of another war, rather than get them into one, I doubt that NATO itself will last another 200 years.
Sweden aren't even neighbours with russia. Sweden were bullied by their masters in the usa to join the cowards in nato.
Opposing Russia is really etched into any neighbouring country, opposing IS the tradition for us. There are obvious reasons for that throughout the history. Its harder to think of neighbours Russia hasn't invaded. :) In the end we have no enemies, Russians have no enemies. Its all state-driven, and state in Russia, is in the hands of one man, who has imagined everybody as enemies and forcing the idea on its people.
The First World War was not triggered by Russia but the Tsar supporting Serbia swung the pendulum irrevocably towards war. That said, the British had no national interest in fighting the war and no significant army to do it. But Britain leaders declared war anyway.
To be a bit zealous to details, Sweden was "alliance independent" and have been so for a while. Our neutrality went out the window the day Russ...USSR invaded Finland 1939. A large part of our weapons, ammunition and equipment was sent to Finland, recruitment "offices" for volunteering to Finland was opened. The foreign minister was had to resign as he pushed to have Sweden to join Finland in their defense.
Also worth mentioning is Sweden actually have occupied Moscow. This was in 160, interesting reading, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_la_Gardie_campaign . Perhaps we should help Russia with internal problems once again?

Russia never had Baltic Sea dominance. Who controls the straits between Denmark and Sweden has the control of Baltic Sea. Also, Sweden and Finland always had 10x more anti ship missiles compared to Russian navy fleet size. Now that Finland and Sweden brought NATO air dominance to the whole of Baltic Sea region... Russia has nothing but their cargo ship anchors and their unfiltered sewage from St Petersburg.
NATO does NOT have guaranteed air dominance. Russia's air defense missile system are demonstrated stronger and completely integrated with their observation systems.

Individual countries could send their own troops to Ukraine even if they are part of NATO, couldn't they? And they could be deployed to western Ukraine as noncombat forces, maybe as defenders and security forces, which would free up Ukrainian forces to fight the Russians in the east and south.

This is where I have a problem with 2% of GDP. In Australia where I am GDP is $1.5 trillion but tax revenue is $500 billion so 2% of GDP equals 6% of government revenue each year. Our government debt at 5% interest is 10% of tax revenue. All up 16%. In the U.S., government debt interest at 5% is a staggering 40% of the tax take each year. $34 trillion debt/$14 trillion GDP/ $4.5 trillion tax revenue. Two percent of U.S. GDP is $680 billion - they actually spend about $760 billion on defence. When you combine a $760 billion defence spend and $1,700 billion in interest you get $2.46 trillion coming out of a $4.4 trillion tax budget (55%). The U.S. is on a mission to get others to step up because they are going to have to either A cut back on defence spending and or B increase taxes or C reduce interest rates and trash cash and try to inflate the world out of it's/ their debt or D find a way to reduce the cost of living by so much that increased taxes won't be so painful or E which seems to be what is happening make Russia and China weak again. This is why Trump is so aggressive with countries that won't spend 2% of GDP, however, he should look at his own country that has allowed itself to get into so much debt. A debt that has never got smaller no matter which side of politics was in charge. Including his own administration. Russia and China see this debt as the glaring weakness of populist democratic governments and it is. What they don't see though is the wests ability to dump them and make them broke too. Russia is just fossil fuels that are on the way out and most of China's population is still very poor and their cheap labor will soon be worthless once autonomous robots take over factory work. Trump will try to bully everyone else to pay for defence but will he turn the spotlight back on U.S. citizens to pay more tax and reduce government spending. I doubt it. He will most likely just start some sort of brainless civil war .

He's wrong in point #2 on hanging on to equipment after the cold war. Sweden did NOT do as the Finns, we scrapped most military capabilities during 1991-2014 (equipment, good and broad conscription with long term reserve plans, basic logistics, most brigades were dismantled and so on)

Even 2% of GDP always seemed a very small amount to spend on defence, when seen as the most important role of any country’s government. I remember, on previous occasions, the UK had to take into account the amount they spent on military pensions, to get their headline figure up to 2%. I hope that’s not the case now. As important as military pensions are, launching pensioners over enemy lines, in the heat of battle, probably isn’t going to turn a conflict around. Although they could perhaps slow things down a bit in the enemy’s post office queues.

The immediate, actual benefit of having Sweden involved, ironically, is that Sweden no longer has to be totally self-reliant on defenses and thus needs LESS defense capability internally, allowing it to donate more. While Sweden was in theory unaligned, it needed to hoard production, so to speak. Now that a huge number of nations are contractually obligated to aid, it could in theory give away up to 100% of its own weapons and short-to-medium term production as well. It won't go that far of course, but I'm just making the point.

Interesting to hear the question about winter warfare. It sounds trivial, but you get one guess why Finnish ships have higher ice breaking classification than 98% of the rest of NATOs warships. A lot of US equipment for land warfare is not very good with winter landscape either. The Bradley famously got stuck in 30 cm of snow when it was tested out for Norway. In Scandinavia, we routinely have up to a meter of snow every winter in places. It's good that the other countries get an opportunity to learn winter warfare at scale.

Both nations have modest, but modern defense systems. I guess especially Ireland will ramp up naval presence after several Russian provocations with thinly veiled threats agains pipelines and cables.

Tanks are still very much relevant as the battlefield in Ukraine recreates the stagnant lines of WW1 which led to the creation of the tank. This is why the Ukraines asked for even more Abrams M1's M2 Bradleys, Challengers and Leopard tanks. Even the limited armor enables Ukraine to hold back the Russian meat waves.
Look at the use of armor in the ongoing huge NATO exercises in Sweden, Finland, the Baltic States and Poland.

Russia didn't have Baltic dominance in the first place. It did have Black Sea dominance and in my estimation the fear of losing it was the primary reason for the initial takeover of Crimea in 2014 and the invasion of 2022.

Yes, nato's border with Russia is conciderable longer. But a very sizeable porsion of that border is very difficult to attack with heavy equipment. So it isn't as bad as it first looks like. Also, it means Russia feel forced to tie up more forces there, making a bit less available for their terror operations in ukraine, and the more vulnerable parts of the nato borders. Finland and Swedens membership is only a good thing from a military point of view. But I hope Finland prepare real defence lines, which can be completed and activated on short notice.
We have be doing that for past 80 years on defence planing. There is only three or four places that Russia could eaven try to invade and those places are well known and taken in to the considaration.
