  • Macedonian Language
In this language episode, world traveler David Hoffmann sits down with Kate in the city of Bitola to show us what the Macedonian language sounds like. For those of you who don’t know about Macedonian, it is a South Slavic language spoken by about 2 million people. If you’re thinking it sounds similar to Bulgarian you’re right. Bulgarian is its closest dialect. Here, Kate and David go over some common words in English then in Macedonian to give you a taste for what it sounds like. If you’re headed to Macedonia, we encourage you to learn some of these frequently spoken words to help you meet new people and show them you’ve made the effort to learn some of the local words (although you’ll find that there are many English speakers throughout the country). We hope you enjoy this intro to the Macedonian language. Special thanks to Kate for participating in the video and to our sponsors, XShot and Macedonia Timeless. Vi blagodarime za glendanje!

even the word Macedonia and all paragogs are Greek in origin as Makedon consist on Mak edon. Mak from Mikos makos makris (long in English and ednos that means in view. In other words Macedonia means in ancient hellenic dorian dialect the land wth tall people, as Madedonian origing is Dorian . So what a fuck is that vomminting incoherences that you present

Of course, man... you are right !!!!
The Ancient Macedonia... was just a Greek Kingdom, in today's Northern Greece.
The Ancient Macedonians... were just a Greek Tribe, in today's Northern Greece.
The Ancient Macedonians spoke Greek !!! Their Macedonian dialect was one of the many Ancient Greek dialects... until, the Ancient Macedonian King, Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great... chose the ''Attic'' Greek dialect to be used by all Greeks... and this is the Greek dialect, which, Alexander the Great and the Ancient Macedonians spread to Asia.
FYROMians have clearly a Slavic-Bulgarian-Cyrillic language.

"Extreme Macedonian nationalists, who are concerned with demonstrating the continuity between ancient and modern Macedonians, deny that they are Slavs and claim to be the direct descendants of Alexander the Great and the ancient Macedonians. The more moderate Macedonian position, generally adopted by better educated Macedonians and publicly endorsed by Kiro Gligorov, the first president of the newly independent Republic of Macedonia, is that modern Macedonians have no relation to Alexander the Great, but are a Slavic people whose ancestors arrived in Macedonia in the sixth century AD".
(Loring M. Danforth Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Bates College, Lewiston, Maine)
"The Macedonian people and their kings were of Greek stock, as their traditions and the remains of their language combine to testify."
[John Bagnell Bury, "A History of Greece to the Death of Alexander the Great", 2nd ed. (1913)]
"That the Macedonians and their kings did in fact speak a dialect of Greek and bore Greek names may be regarded nowadays as certain."
[Malcom Errington, "A History of Macedonia"]
"And yet if we take into account the political conditions, religion and morals of the Macedonians, our conviction is strengthened that they were a Greek race and akin to the Dorians."
[Ulrich Wilcken, "Alexander the Great", (1967)]
"Nowadays historians generally agree that the Macedonians form part of the Greek ethnos; hence they also shared in the common religious and cultural features of the Hellenic world."
    [M.Oppermann, "Oxford Classical Dictionary", 3rd ed. (1996), p.905]
"Hesiod first mentioned 'Makedon', the eponym of the people and the country, as a son of Zeus, a grandson of Deukalion, and so a first cousin of Aeolus, Dorus, and Xuthus; in other words he considered the 'Makedones' to be an outlying branch of the Greek-speaking tribes, with a distinctive dialect of their own, 'Macedonian'."
    [N.G.L.Hammond, "Oxford Classical Dictionary", 3rd ed. (1996), pp.904,905]
"All in all, the language of the Macedones was a distinct and particular form of Greek, resistant to outside influnces and conservative in pronunciation. It remained so until the fourth century when it was almost totally submerged by the flood tide of standardized Greek."
[Hammond and Griffith, "A History of Macedonia" Vol ii, 550-336 BC.]
"I shall not indulge in a lecture on the ancient identity of the Macedonians and on Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great, but the Greeks were historically correct in the campaign that they launched in the early days of the dispute...
"Nor shall I engage in a lecture on the falsification of the history of Slavo-Macedonia since 1944, although that, too, has much hard factual content. I simply remind the House that Tito's renaming of Vardar Banovina as the Republic of Macedonia in 1944 was a political statement. More than that, it was a territorial claim. It laid claim to territory in Greece and in Bulgaria. Notably, the objective was the warm water port of Salonika on the Aegean."
[Mr. Edward O'Hara of the British Parliament]
"The feeling of being Macedonians, and nothing but Macedonians, seems to be a sentiment of fairly recent growth, and even today is not very deep-rooted."
[Elisabeth Barker, "Macedonia, its place in Balkan power politics",
(originally published in 1950 by the Royal Institute of International Affairs), p.10]
."The Department has noted with considerable apprehension increasing propaganda rumors and semi-official statements in favor of an autonomous Macedonia, emanating principally from Bulgaria, but also from Yugoslav Partisan and other sources, with the implication that Greek territory would be included in the projected state. "This Government considers talk of Macedonian "nation', Macedonian "Fatherland", or Macedonian "national consciousness" to be unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic nor political reality, and sees in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece"."
[The Secretary of State, Edward Stettinius, to Certain Diplomatic and Consular Officers, U.S. State Department, Foreign Relations Vol. VIII, Circular Airgram (868.014 / 26 Dec. 1944)]

All linguists agree that this language is a Bulgarian dialect. Slavs came to the region in the 6th century Ad. Ancient Macedonians who lived in the region(mostly in Greece at the time of Alexander) spoke Koine Greek so they obviously have nothing to do with the ancient Macedonians unless of course they invented a time machine and went back 1000 years prior to their coming to the region. This whole idea of ancient Macedonia and current North Macedonia was created by Tito in 1944 by trying to install a false identity to North Macedonians to avoid Bulgaria and Serbia expansion into the region. This is very well document and has nothing to do with petty Balkan politics.

The Ancient Macedonians were Greeks and they lived in today's Northern Greece.
The Only real today's Macedonians are the Greeks who live in the Geographical Region of Macedonia, in today's Northern Greece, exactly where, Alexander the Great and the Ancient Greek Tribe of Macedonians lived !!!
If you want to refer to the Slavic country (FYROM), which, located between Greece, Bulgaria, Albania and Serbia... you can call them as ''FYROMians'' !!! These Slavs of FYROM are a Mix of Bulgarians and Albanians and these Brainwashed people want to call their country as ''Republic of Macedonia''... but... the territory of FYROM and the people who live there, it's Historicaly, Culturarly and Archaeologicaly proven that, have No any connection with the one and only real Macedonia, which, located in today's Northern Greece !!!

Why Philip II founded a city, in today's Bitola, FYROM, and he gave to the city the GREEK Name ''Heraclea'' ???
Why Cassander founded a city in Ancient Macedonia and he gave to the city the GREEK Name ''Thessaloniki'' ???
Why Alexander the Great founded a city in Northwest India and he gave to the city the GREEK Name ''Nickaia'' ???

The ''Pella curse tablet'' is a text in Doric GREEK from 375-350 B.C. and was found it in Pella, in Ancient Macedonia.
The plays of Euripides (480 - 406 BC) ''Archelaus'' and ''Bacchae'' were written and were played in Ancient Macedonia.
The plays of Euripides were written, of course, in GREEK language and were played in Macedonian Public. How is it possible for the ancient Macedonians to could attend these performances, 75 years before the time of Alexander the Great, if they did not understand the GREEK language ???

Alexander's name - in fact, the same Alexander ("the Great") whose name recently you put on your international airport - is also Greek origin. The "Alexander" name that to you sounds completely unintelligible, consisting of two parts in Greek: the "alex-" is a prefix meaning "protector"; so we have modern Greek words "bulletproof (protects from bullets)," lightning rod "(protects from lightning), and" parachute "(protects against drop ).And "male" is the general "man" word. Homer Odyssey begins as follows:
"Man me ennepe Polytropon muse ..." etc. In English the root "andro-" passed in words like "androgynous", "android", "Andrew", and a few more.

Here in Australia most Balkans can speak to each other easily.
We have in Melbourne Balkan parties/dances with different Balkan music too. My parents meet at one of these dances/parties.
When my friend speaks Russian I can understand some phases or words she says too.
The funny thing is as a child I would mix Macedonian language words with BosnianHerzegovinan lol and talking to my Maco grandfather would pick up my grandmother from my mum's side would get confused lol and because she could speak English unlike my Macedonian grandparents she would tell me just say it in english lol.
My BosnianHerzegovinan grandmother would speak in her language and I would always answer in english. My mum never understood why I would do this. For me it was easier.

Ok lemme teach you some history since you didn't pay attention in class. The truth is Bulgarians are stealing all the history of Macedonia. The biggest thing, Konstantin and Dimitar Miladinovi were brothers from MACEDONIA they were from STRUGA which is near Ohrid Lake which is really away from Bulgaria. They both wrote on a strushki accent. They were teachers in many macedonian towns and Koco Racin was their student (also a macedonian). In 1861 in the city Zagreb, they published the Macedonian Folk songs. By that time the greek were targeting macedonia and they wanted to be protected by bulgaria, and that's why in a later copy the collection of songs was called "Bulgarian". Miladinovi always lived in Macedonia and always were Macedonia, their museum is here, their house is here. And T'ga za jug is on the strushki accent which is the same now and then. Bulgarians don't steal history when you don't have evidence to back it up... Atleast respect us if you're living here Shiptar
