Duane Allman & Eric Clapton 1970 - Studio Jams 1 thu 6

  • Never officially released bootleg.
Notes: Tom Dowd is responsible for introducing Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. In 1970, Dowd was in the middle of recording the Allman Brother's second album, Idlewild South , when Eric's manager (Robert Stigwood) called to tell Tom that Eric would like to bring his new band, Derek and the Dominos, to Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida to record with him.
Tom later recounted the phone call that began it all. Now when the call came I was in the studio with Duane. I said, Hey, that's a hot one, kid! That was Eric Clapton's management talking about him coming here to record. Allman looks at me and goes You mean the guy from Cream? Do you think he'd mind if I just came to watch. I told him, no problem.
Eric and the rest of the Dominos arrived at Criteria Studios in late August. During the first week, most of the studio time was spent jamming and piecing together new songs. (Taken from whereseric.com).

What advice would you give a guitarist trying to make it today?
I’d tell him to remember that you can’t never play just like anyone else so you ought not to try. You gotta utilize what’s inside you to create what you want to create. You gotta sort yourself out and sort the music you hear out. Then find something to hang your notes on. You hang your notes on your attitude and on yourself. If it don’t come out pure, it don’t come out good. I never took no lessons, but I got that attitude.

Hey Beau, your Dad’s playing and singing is what lit up the Layla album. His strong high harmonies with Duane’s guitar playing and song ideas made Layla one of the GREATEST albums of all time. Eric has never be able to come close to his Layla Album. Enough said …. Bobby, Duane, Carl & Jim … Oh yeah … and Eric’s soulful sadness in his singing. His aching heart and longing to be with Patti is what put everything together on the Album.

Cream was the template for hard rock. He set it and moved on
The song writing after is insane…the period you set - Santana and winwood, and more. And Clapton is in the thick of it…inspiring the next gen - Phil collins and sting, and more.

It's amazing thinking about how this happened. By chance, Eric was listening to the radio and heard Wilson Pickett's cover of "Hey Jude". Obviously, Duane's touch on that had Eric going crazy, he said he spent the rest of the day in the phone with everyone he knew, trying to find out who was playing guitar. Eric said it was "the best rock guitar he'd ever heard". Finally, he got his answer..."Some guy named "Skydog Allman". As it turned out, he was in Miami, getting ready to cut the Layla Album. His producer Tom Dowd also worked with the Allman Brothers, who just happened to be playing a Concert, and Eric was sitting there in the Press Pit, and as he says "I mean, he was REALLY good on the record, but LIVE, he was "Double Trouble", just BAD as can be"... "And I forgot all about making the album, we just went back to the studio and jammed." Thank God someone had enough sense to go into the Sound Booth and run Tape to record this.
I remember going to see the Allman's 40th Anniversary Tour at The Beacon in NYC... And Warren Haynes gets in the Mic and says, "Will y'all please help me Welcome to the Stage, Mr Eric Clapton. Normally I'd get front row in Gregg's side but that nite I was in the front row near the Center, and Eric was on Fire that night. Derek Trucks was just so tapped into it, Warren was incredible, it was such a special night and they all knew it and they played their asses off. When they walked off Stage after Layla, the encore, Eric says to Derek, "I don't think I've played like that since 1969". Eric was phenomenal on Liz Reed, Why does love got to be so bad", Little Wing, Stormy Monday. Find it, and check it out. It was History. Allman's at The Beacon 2009. Un friggin real ✌️

@@charliegreen5781 As I said in my reply to the other response, all music is obviously subjective in terms of who likes or enjoys it, and also, why.
Just to be clear, I'm not Eric Clapton (unfortunately...lol), and I can't tell you what thoughts and emotions were going thru his mind when he heard Duane's take on it. That said, I don't particularly hear anything that I would call "phenomenal" about Duane's part, except to say that I thought it was some really good playing, and the entire version of the song itself was far from what Paul sang, and The Beatles played. That's not to say I found it better or worse, just much different, but in a good way. Back to Duane's bit.... Again, not being Eric, I can't tell you, or even guess why Duane's playing sent him into a whirlwind frenzy trying to find out who was playing. Being the musician that he was, and is, Eric certainly "hears" music differently than us mere mortals, musician or not. I'm not sure "how" he "heard" Duane playing his bit, but I think it's safe to say from what The Allman Brothers history is, Duane was an incredible guitarist, with Slide skills that were, quite literally, off the charts. Now, as far as Eric's "tastes" in terms of his Desert Island playlist, I'm not really a Prince fan, however, I do love his Guitar Break in Purple Rain. I believe Prince truly was a gifted guitarist, and an underrated one at that. Again, just my opinion. I can say that it wouldn't be on my desert island playlist, as diverse as my musical tastes are. I'll take a look for what you referenced and give it a listen, always appreciate a good tip. Thanks for that ✌️

Are these some of the greatest players of all time, the drums , keys, bass, everything at the peak of creativity? Plus the tone of the instruments and the studio is analogue heaven. It didn't get any better than this. Oh yeah, the singing was good too.

Fantastic I would of given whatever I own to have been watching these amazing musicians flying over their guitar’s and witnessing them enter that place that they must feel throughout their entire body & soul and result is just amazing if I only once in my life could experience what they surely are feeling no I am only a fan who will not start one morning before my music sets my entire day but without fans like me maybe it might not be as special for them but I am just trying to understand why I can not carry a tune😂 when few people love music as fully as I do❤

All I can say is that I'm glad I grew up during this era when music was played by real talented musicians with minimal instrumentation driven by pure love for the art of making music that represents and captures the moment as it should have been captured. If I don't ever make it to heaven, Lord just stamp on my forehead, "PAID IN FULL."
