  • SACRILEGIOUS ARRANGEMENT #5
Dear friends, I hope you’re well! Today’s sacrilege is dedicated to Paganini this time! 😁 As my friend Svetlin ROUSSEV recently recorded the whole cycle of Caprices, we thought it was a very good occasion to propose an alternative version for the famous Capriccio No. 9, « La caccia » (the hunt). The Caprices where written between 1802 and 1817 and La caccia is the only one where the composer ask for mimesis, trying to imitate the flutes and the hunting horns. So why not create an ensemble and an accompaniment to recreate the kind of atmosphere Paganini was imagining ? 😇 You will hear a « chiffonie », a medieval small hurdy-gurdy, 2 recorders, 2 natural horns, a baroque drum, and of course a bunch of clarinets from the Bb to the contrabass.
If you don’t know Svetlin, feel free to check his CZcams Channel ‪@SvetlinRoussev‬ and all his albums, he’s definitely one of the most sought-after virtuoso of his generation and I had the privilege to be his colleague many years ago when he was the concertmaster of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
I hope you will like this unexpected arrangement of the piece, let me know what you think in the comments!
Take care and see you soon for a next video! ❤️

Absolutely wonderful! I do have a question: do you think one day you could release a “bloopers”video, or basically a video that showcases moments where you have messed up during recording? I think that would be hilarious and showcase just how difficult these videos are to make.

So often in your videos, I hear something played so effortlessly (like the bass clarinet tonguing at 1:37), then do a double take as I realize how insanely difficult it actually is. Excellent as always!

I have a query around French instrumental music education and the learning of solfege. I was once asked to teach a French student with her French clarinet teacher present. We had a discussion around scales and particularly sight-reading. Both were astonished by my assertions that these were necessary skills and disciplines. Both had just attended a week-long course producing less than 20 minutes of music to be performed in concert. Conversely I have just tutored a course in the UK over 3 days. We had 2 final concerts, each 1 hour long. I wonder what Nicolas' experience of growing up through local conservatoires was and whether he had a similar experience to mine! Solfege seems to be a priority in the early years of a French musical education but I have never discovered how students transition into a professional world that requires the rapid absorption of new music.

A piece idea … Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks by Strauss, would be a perfect piece under your musicianship to utilize the clarinet family from soprano Eb down to Bb contrabass plus would be perfect to show off the buffet brand and clarinets and why they are the best.
