    OutRun 2 is a great game in its own right, but does it do the original justice? Is it the perfect sequel, or just another attempt to cash in on the original?

    Horizon Chase was never meant to impersonate OutRun, it was a homage to Gremlin's Lotus trilogy on the Amiga, and later their Top Gear games on the SNES.

    this game literally brought tears to my eyes when i played it. it was like i was playing the original the way i imagined it in my mind when i was a kid. Sometimes i'd lose because my vision got all blurry, lol. I didn't even play the original that much, i just loved the entire concept of driving a cool car down an endless stretch of road from an early age. It was probably the first thing to go into my bucket list.

    Truly fantastic to finally see someone not only pay some deserved homage to a Sega property, but also understand the purpose and appeal of arcade games. Great video and esp your outro man. I for one am an arcade guy, quality over quantity is the way it should be. I play games for mastery, to get better at them, obviously to have fun of course but not just to pass as much time as possible in a bloated open world with 50-100+ hrs of playtime on paper, I'm good on that. And that includes GTurismo 4's obnoxiously long career mode with licenses and endurance races that take hours to complete.
    (PS: Sonic Adventure is great, losing control of Sonic is the players fault, not the games!)

    A new Outrun is long overdue, although it's hard to say how it would do today. Would it sell purely on nostalgia alone, would it be able to stand out enough in a market filled with racing simulators, copy and paste shooters/battle royale titles, open world games and micro transaction laden games. Would it even be a polished title unlike so many games that are rushed out to make a quick profit.
    Also Sega being Sega then common sense doesn't exactly work well for them since they usually ignore it and make sloppy mistakes more often than not.
    Outrun is still long overdue a new title though if it can even be possible.

    One of my fondest memories of playing this game was at a field trip to a bowling alley we went to in middle school. No one could reach the end, most only getting halfway.
    I can still see it now: 50 cents in, Heart Attack mode, Enzo Ferrari. A crowd of classmates, some cheering me on, some trying to distract me; dead locked focus on the course and all the turns. Less than 10 seconds on the clock coming down the final stretch...and I crossed the finish line! The crowd went absolutely nuts! I even managed to get rank AA! The atmosphere was so overjoyed you could probably hear the screaming halfway down the alley!
    I remember walking back to my lane, head held high, and spirits soaring. Without a doubt, the best 2 quarters I ever spent.

    Between all the versions of Outrun 2 I've played over the years, the arcade version, the Xbox version, all of the versions of 2006 (including the PSP though you really have to use a hacked PSP to get the full framerate), the SP arcade version, I've probably put in over 300 hours over the years. It's probably my #1 favorite game of all time. You're right about the fact that it feels good to play. That's the main factor in replay value for me. I can play Outrun 2 for hours on end by myself with no major goal in mind, and I have a blast doing it. The first day that I got 2006 for PS2, I went to the arcade mode and played it from lunchtime through the night. It was only the next day that I found out about all of the other modes that I could have been playing and getting Outrun Miles, but it was okay. That first day was incredible, and I had a fantastic time regardless of any rewards.
    I'm curious about your less than charitable thoughts on 2006. I thought it was a great improvement, and the expanded "career" mode mixing all 30 tracks together, forwards and backwards, was brilliant. It still felt as fantastic as ever to play, even on face buttons like on the PS2 or PSP and not analog triggers like on the Xbox. I was fortunate enough to get the PC version on Steam years ago. It says I have 40 hours as of now, but I know that's wrong. I know it dropped a bunch of hours a couple years after I got it on Steam.
    What a delight of a game :)

    Nice video.
    Outrun 2 (along with the later SP release) was in many ways the ultimate expression and sequel to the franchise. It included the multiplayer aspect found in many of SEGAs arcade racers. It managed to include many of the locales visited in previous sequels (including many from Outrunners, which hasn't received a proper home release still), and was one of Yu Suzuki's expressions of his love of Ferrari.
    Sega no longer having the Ferrari license is one of the reasons we haven't seen a sequel, why the original was pulled from online sale, and why they modified the car in the Switch release.
    I'd love to see an Outrun 3, even if they don't use Ferraris or any other car make for that matter; they wouldn't run into the aforementioned issues that keeps Outrun 2 out of respective online digital stores.

    Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (or Outrun 2 as they look and play similar) was a game that I grew up with back in 2007 when I was a kid. Although I have grown towards Shooter Games nowadays, Outrun 2006 is still a Racing Game that I love playing 12 years later. Its a simple but fun game that offers a bit of variety and originality compared to other racing games from my experience. It is a bit repetitive but its to be expected with Racing Games like this one so its not really a complaint. Such a shame that the Outrun Franchise has been dead since then but at least there are 2 or 3 great games instead of 10 recycled games.
    Also unlike the majority of PC Games from that time, the PC Version still runs perfectly even on Windows 10 without patches which is brilliant so it is as simple as popping the disc in, installing it and playing it (except the Multiplayer but even if it was up I have no interest in playing it) as I still have the game in my collection so I play it at least 1 or 2 times a year like the rest of the other games I grew up with. Also played the Arcade Version back then aswell during my Weekend Holidays at the Caravan Sites I went to as they always have a Arcade Area. Haven't seen a Outrun Machine since then but probably have to pop in towards my nearest Arcade Place to see if its back.
    Great video. Nice to see these kind of Video Games getting some love for once as it helps reminding myself the good old simple days unlike today.

    I really like the mission mode in this game. Most tasks are challenging in a way that's relevant to improving your driving, and some are really unique, like the memory and math games. Actually my biggest gripe with this version of the game is that they made the math mayhem easier than the japanese original. Generally in racing games I prefer mission or test modes to career modes unless the ai is good and the races are longer than 2 or 3 laps, I'd rather have shorter challenges that you can perfect, a la pgr medals or gt licenses.

    The only thing I don't think has aged well about OutRun 2 are the branching paths at the end of each stage before you get to the start of the next stage which are effectively hidden loading screens that take about 15 seconds to get through. You get some fun things like planes and dragons flying overhead but just boring concrete slopes at the side of each track. If OutRun 3 was made for modern consoles, I suspect each stage would load quicker so you'd only need maybe 5 seconds between the branch and the checkpoint.
    I know a hypothetical OutRun 3 would probably be better as a downloadable $25-30 virtual arcade type game but I think I'd probably rather shell out extra for a physical copy assuming that Sega was able to get the Ferrari license again (or some other similarly exotic license like Lamborghini, Bugatti, or Koenigsegg).

    Had this game on the original xbox. Got it because it had a Ferrari on the front. Sunk many hours in to it but did quickly grow bored of it.

    whats with the purple testarossa? is that a port or something of outrun on a different system?

    • @SteveBrandon
      @SteveBrandon Před 4 lety +1

      It's the Switch version and it's Testarossa-esque but that version doesn't have any Ferrari licensing so all of the cars have been cosmetically-altered to avoid infringing any copyrights (not that the original arcade game, which had not just a Testarossa but also recognizable Corvettes, Volkswagen Beetles, and Porsche 911s as traffic, bothered with licensing either but back in the 1980s, arcade games generally didn't bother seeking licensing permission from automobile manufacturers, I think Konami's WEC Le Mans was one of the few arcade racing game exceptions from 1986 that was licensed).

    If anyone is asking "why did they charge what was then full-price for not much content?"
    My guess: Ferrari
    To be more specific: The Ferrari license. I'm pretty it wasn't easy or cheap to convince them to license their cars.

  • @No-vq1iv
    @No-vq1iv Před 4 lety

    Yeah... I don't know about that, it feels like everything that was "special" about the original Outrun more or less exists in every "arcade" racing game nowadays, hence the term. About the only thing that was really new about Outrun 2 was the brake-to-drift mechanic and if I'm being honest I think it deserves to be forgotten by history just for that reason alone.

    • @Kaceydotme
      @Kaceydotme  Před 5 lety +1

      I’ve only played about 30 minutes of it as I just got it with PS Plus. I like the art style and the controls are tight- I do worry that it doesn’t have the same replayability that makes OR2 so timeless. I need to really sink my teeth into it to develop a more solid opinion though.
