Outrun 2 - Is it a Masterpiece?

- 2023 marks 20 years since Outrun 2 debuted in the arcade.
As a sequel to a legendary arcade classic, would the first true sequel to Outrun earn the same respect?
In this episode of The SEGAGuys Race, Dan "The Mega" Drive takes the wheel from James The SEGAholic to delve into the history of the game, and in particular its astonishing Xbox port. - Hry
Sega needs to bring this out for modern consoles. Would love even a 3 game disc of Out Run 2, Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2
Unfortunately Sega no longer has the Ferrari licence. So the only way that you're going to be able to play it now outside of the arcade is second hand, if you already have it, or through emulation.
*the amazing SATURN copy that is!* 💡
@@joshoshea3194 You would think for the Outrun series that has already been done Ferrari would give it a lifetime licence. There's not really any financial reward out there it's just so the fans can appreciate this awesome nostalgia
There's nothing in this world quite like the magic of Outrun. The open road, the blue skies, the palmtrees, the thrilling speed, and your girlfriend by your side cheering you on.
The short answer is YES it is a bloody Masterpiece. Yu Suzuki is a legend, I used to love going to the Trocedero in London and competing against 4 players and winning by powersliding and driving like it's stolen. Good times!
Trocedero was special bro.
Remember the Afterburner simulator they had there? Special times. ☮️
Have been two times at Trocadero. First time in the 90s when Ridge Racer and a Multiplayer Daytona USA Setup were gaming heaven. The whole atmosphere was absolutely stunning. Loved it. The second time around 2018 when there was nothing more than a rather hidden floor with some leftover dusty cabinets. It was like a graveyard of old machines. A total disgrace.
@@chemeister Some of the machines ended up at Las Vegas Arcade Soho, on Wardour Street. It ain't as grand as the Trocadero was, but it's pretty cool
@@chemeister You talking about AfterBurner Climax? Big man game!
Outrun 2 was definitely a dream come true. Very grateful to have that and Coast 2 Coast.
I still regularly play Outrun 2 and C2C. Amazing fun and so much replayability. Hope it gets added to the Insignia Xbox Live service to get some online matches going again. Great vid!
I still cant understand how they didnt release more Outrun games after this masterpiece, the drifting its one of the most satisfying ever and the scenarios are beautiful
Drifting is great in Sega Rallye. No need to imitate it on asphalt. Ever seen a mid-engine car drift?? Feels so cheap in this premium optics and sound.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt idk about realism man i just want to drift fast in a beautiful arcade race lol
I guess the license fee for the prancing horse wasn’t cost effective anymore 😢
Suppose they could’ve just made more without the Ferrari cars, but then it wouldn’t be OutRun.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldtThe game plays both ways though. Most of the best times are done without using the drifting mechanic, only on the harder routes are a couple of corners necessary. Where as heart attack mode probably forces it to be used for best scores. That leaves the other modes to play as you like… its just the drifting is so much fun regardless of how unrealistic it seems.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt They could have also made Initial D stage 1 arcade perfect on Dreamcast but not powerful enough.
I see myself as a hardcore videogame fan who is special interested in all kinds of racing games. I definitely played hundreds of them and in my opinion Outrun 2 is one of the best! Such a smooth handling, the beauty of the landscape, the feeling of the cars, the music and the huge content. It's just a beauty!
That last sentence belongs on the back of the box! Great summary!
@@SEGAGuys Thank you! You also made a wonderful video which showes it all! It makes me happy to see that the game gets represented so well! I am happy for you that you can enjoy it on the 360! For me was unplayable because it had occassionaly leg which ruined some races. So Outrun 2 was the reason for me to buy an original xbox, but I don't regret it! =)
One of my love moments in my life was working for SEGA seeing the AM2 machines being built was amazing....and I met Jackie Chan, Sinead O'Connor Redman along with many other great actors that loved hanging round a great arcade in Queensway London. Playing the R360 on my lunch break was awesome. Maàn Sega gave this old man some great memories. Nintendont players just don't know.
For my money, this is the best racing game, as it's perfect in almost every possible way, and it's the only racing game I come back to on a regular basis. I loved the original game for the atmosphere, music and gameplay, but it was hard as nails. Outrun 2 is just amazing, as once you get to grips with power sliding, finishing the game can be done fairly quickly, but only on the easiest route. To make to to the finish on the other ones, requires some practice, but it's more than doable. It makes you say just one more try each time you don't make it, as you might just be feet from the checkpoint, which makes you say "just one more go". And that's what separates the great games, from the truly amazing ones.
Even on the OG Xbox it is a stunner of a looker.
One thing I'd disagree with is about Outrunners not 'capturing' the spirit of the original. It totally did and it was extremely popular in the arcades in the early 90's.
It's definitely the entry that came the closest so I think you could make the argument either way. - Dan
I feel like, if Sega ever decides to make another OutRun game without the expensive Ferrari license, it should be called OutRunners 2. OutRunners had cars that were somewhat recognizable but with enough cosmetic changes so as to avoid any issues with licensing.
(Not that I wouldn't want Ferrari to return officially for a full-fledged OutRun 3 if it were at all possible.)
Still love to play 2006 every couple of months. Even the PSP version feels like arcade perfection.
I don't know man... I loved the original on ps2 but I was severely disappointed when I played the psp port back in the day. I seem to remember them forcing you to use the thumb slider thing to steer, which just killed the game for me.
@@wrathpsp
I was all up in it! 😂
Pretty sure you can use the dpad to steer on the PSP.
I imported my first PSP from Japan, so by the time OR was out I'd been playing Wipeout Pure with the slider for a while.
Too much frame rate issues on the psp version as far as I can remember.
It's nice to play it on steam deck or something these days.
@@kalofkrypton Maybe your right. It was a long time ago, but I was still underwhelmed by the visuals and gameplay in comparison to the original. I also had my PSP imported from Japan by the way, long before it's release in the West. I think lumines and ridge Racer were the first games I got with it and everybody who saw it in action was wowed. At the time it made me feel like Marty McFly with a cool new gadget from the future! 🤣
@@chilly6470 I agree totally man. Nothing like playing the PC port on the Steam Deck at 60fps with maximum graphics settings.
OUTRUN 2 is no doubt a MF MASTERPIECE!!
I got outrun on the Nintendo 3ds. It’s visually pleasing to play a classic title in 3d and it has analogue steering! I was fortunate to get a copy before the eshop discontinued.
This isn't Outrun. It's the sequel.
This game is a jewel to me.... BEYOND masterpiece.
Got this for the OG Xbox back in the day, loved it then and would love it now, if Microsoft brought it back to the Backward Compatibility library. Make it happen, MS! Great job on the overview/video!
Me2. I loved the xbox version.
So gutted I had to sell my collection in 2013 due to "life" - but I have many many good memories of my best buddy and i back in the day; we were both 'street racers' owning a 200sx at 300hp and him with a mitsi gto 3000 vr4 at 400hp back in the day...
Now we don't keep in contact, but regularly at early in the morning we would drive down to the m4 services in Wiltshire and play outrun 2 together....now my life is typical, you know - married with kids and stuff. Still, at least my wife certainly appreciates cars and we had our own project car (e30 BMW tourer which we got married in and conceived our daughter "camaro" in... but as of today - we literally are car-less!)
I have the ps2 version and i still own it.
The best produced video you’ve done so far mate, absolutely brilliant game which I haven’t played since the XBLA version - it looks as good as it’s release in 2003
The racing game. Yu Suzuki's last major racing title too. Simply stunning.
Still holds up to this day. Wish I could persuade the PC version to see/use the Logitech G29. Total monster of a game.
Such great memories of this, a friend gifted me a disc of this game and it blew me away as a younger gamer. Ran so fast and fluid, unlike anything else. Need to revisit it! Thanks for bringing back the memories Dan :D
Cheers Shane! Yep it blew me away too back in 2004, and after a few years mainly playing C2C I fell in love with it all over again - Dan
I play the PSP version of this game regularly on my Retroid Pocket 3 (don't worry, I also own the original PSP version), and it is such a wonderful piece of arcade racing history.
An amazing game, I play the PC port and still looks amazing to this day
Graphically it looks 5-7 years ahead of its era
For me about near perfect arcade racer .the xbox version just stunning and still play today
Brilliant video, I got back into this game just before last Christmas, had a fantastic time with it!
Great to see you cover this, it’s certainly a classic in my books!
The Godfather II of arcade sequels. What a game this is and what a stunning job Sumo Digital/Sega done on the home XBOX port.
Played it in the arcades and finished it every time. Loved playing it when it came out on xbox. True classic game.
Outrun 2 is truly a masterpiece. Why is this game not more available on modern platforms???
In my childhood I was lucky enough to try it in the arcade and was surprised they even had a cabinet of it down in the arcades at Southend-on-Sea, been a long time since I've been down the seafront tho so I don't know if it's still there but it was insanely cool seeing a legit mockup of a car body altered to an arcade cabinet in place, with it moving too it felt so immersive
We love hearing personal memories like this, it’s the kind of thing we discuss on the main podcast during various topics we cover - memories of our time growing up with SEGA. Thanks for taking the time to comment and view the video.
This really, really needs to be backwards compatible on the Xbox.
Cracking overview Dan. Looking forward to eventually getting to play this. As you said, there's a metric tonne of content and a good way to see some arcade-only games tracks as well. Cheers!
Wish Outrun 2 was ported to Dreamcast - Love both Outrun and Outrun 2.
It's great on the PSP as well
Very nearly worked on it, we were considered, but the contract went to Sumo in the end. Still, I enjoyed having the cabinet in the office!
Great video Dan, excellent coverage of an excellent game. Outrun 2 is probably my favourite game of all time and I'm glad to see you share my love for it too.
(Now do Afterburner Climax!)
Thank you mate, means a lot coming from you given your excellent videos on the Outrun 2 games!
I need a way to play Climax, I foolishly didn't buy it before it got delisted- Dan
Wow, 18,000 views in 4 days 😮 this vids on 🔥
Too sad that Outrun 2 doesn't received a remaster for 8th or 9th gen consoles :(
still got my original xbox and this version, i had no idea about the bonus content, thank you for the great video and channel
I have Outrun 2006 and it is a masterpiece along with the others. Addicting on ps2
Brilliant video for a timeless classic!🥂
*now I am waiting for Out Run 3*
Absolutely yes. I mentioned that this was much more playable than the original on a retro Facebook page.
One of my favourite racing games for any console. I was addicted playing the 15 stage Continuous as it's fun and relaxing at the same time lol. PSP port is mighty impressive just the frame rate suffers a bit but if you do time attack or play the game without any cars on the road the frame rate will improve.
Outrun was one of the very best games ever ... so much enjoyed the game in the arcades and at home ... would be super fantastic if a new version would come to current console generations ...
I kept my 360 for this and Afterburner Climax.
I have OutRun 2 on my Xbox and OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast on my PS2. I love them both and they are worth the price. These games, Midtown Madness, Crazy Taxi and the San Francisco Rush series needs to make a comeback please.
Loving Sega, and Speed Zone aka Cannon Ball Run 3, and going to the Arcade to experience Outrun was a gift from the gaming gods like no other, unforgettable gaming memories :D
The superbly named “heart attack mode” is excellent value for money in the arcades. What a game.
It always cracked me up that the buses did 200 KMH+ in outrun 2.
Yeah, I wish they had those in Glasgow. l’d never be late for work. 😂 - James.
Great video! You guys nailed it
Thank you Scott! Glad you enjoyed it. 💙
Really cool video! Love this game
Yes it is, i played it yesterday. I have it on steam,PS2 and PSP.
I remember at the time having a blast playing Coast 2 Coast on PC. It was always so fun playing it for a couple of complete runs while Risky Ride or other bangers were playing in the background.
Fantastic game and another great video guys
Criminal this and 2006 don't come to current platforms.
the older I get the more I really enjoy this game, I turn it on before I go to work and its perfect. I don't need to invest 100 of hours into it like modern games. I miss real Sega games.
Still my one of my favorite racing games today!
Have a modded original Xbox with this game on it , still playing it....
Great video mate. I loved that game!
Played this to death on xbox. Being an 80s kid this brought back memories.
My favorite racing videogame ever.
The best review I've ever seen on this masterpiece. Thanks so much.
Wow, thank you! 💙🙏🏻
Why isn't Outrun Battle Royale a thing? Create about a dozen sector themes, with unique visuals, but also each with a unique style of racing (heavy turns, hilly straights, etc). Then, you have 100 racers all join a server, where they are delivered the same seed of sectors and traffic patterns, so that every experience will be equal, and the top x players of each sector get automatically delivered the next sector. Anyone who doesn't make it is eliminated, and has to start a new game, with a more accurate ELO, so you will be more evenly matched with players of your level. Because there's no direct interaction between players to affect the experience, learning the sectors and how they tend to procedurally generate becomes the optimal strategy, and it becomes infinitely playable, with bragging rights for completing 10 sectors and being the Winner.
I think this style of game still has the opportunity to be successful with the right gameplay loop design.
That's a superb idea! - Dan
Of course its a masterpiece. I still playing it today. Coast to coast version to. Still fun, graphics are still splendid.
Absolutely Masterpiece, i play it actually again on ps2, Xbox and the 2 online arcade on Xbox 360, joypad and sometimes at wheel, it's the greatest racing game arcade style of the last ten years !!! A true legendary classic.
Thanks to make us rememorize this awesome game trough your video 👍👍
You’re most welcome! Thanks for checking out our content!
For those interested a version of outrun 2 for pc Outrun 2006 is currently in myabandonware.
Outrun a classic and Outrun 2 was a great follow up i enjoyed it alot in London arcades playing with friends and also on the PS2.
Thanks for this. I knew most details (Except for the Cannonball Run inspiration, I'll take your word on that :) but it's always nice to hear someone else's take :)
OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast on PC is the greatest video game of all-time as far as I'm concerned!
(with the FXT mod plus the simple fix to restore the missing lens flare & bloom effects)
I hope Sumo Digital or Raw Thrills would make a new Outrun. Also, I hope Namco makes a new Ridge Racer or R4 remake.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Outrun 2 and the 30th anniversary of Ridge Racer. Namco saved Klonoa, so of course they have to save Ridge Racer as well.
Some people say arcade racing games won't sell, but Hot Wheels Unleashed has sold over 2 million copies.
It's a pity that only Cruis'n survived. Daytona USA is on the brink of death due to SEGA exiting the arcade business.
Raw Thrills made Cruis'n Blast, Switch version Cruis'n Blast, and even made a new Fast & Furious Arcade.
Agree, it’s definitively a genre that’s neglected. And don’t get me wrong, I love a bit of Forza Horizon but there’s some special about the 90’s arcade racer vibe, which OutRun 2 manages to capture brilliantly despite coming out well into the new millennium.
Appreciate you watching and commenting, we love it when people get involved and share their thoughts. Thanks! - James.
Try hotshot racing it uses the engine from outrun 2
I don't remember all those extras on there.. I'll have to go back and play it again.
On the 4th of August 2023 - I saw your Subscriber number at 999 - Nice! I am now your 1000th Subscriber/follower :) I didnt even know Outrun 2 existed lol Cheers!
Thank you for taking the time to comment and let us know you’re our 1000th subscriber!
We hope you enjoy our channel and check out the other content/podcast.
And you’ve got to check out OutRun 2 when you get a chance! It’s definitely worth playing even today. - James.
Great video! I have this one on my list of games to start playing through with a wheel setup. The drifting is just too sweet! My main problem is figuring out which version I'd have to emulate on PC to get the best/easiest setup with the wheel. I think the original arcade version is best, even though there's a PC native port of the game, I'm not sure it has proper wheel support.
❤❤❤
Nice one Dan this is one of my favourite arcades. I actually haven't played any console versions that much. Need to change that.
Cheers mate! Definitely one to grab hold of while it's affordable, the Xbox game can be had for around a tenner - Dan
That was genius including scud race and daytona 2 tracks on here... that is the definition of being creative.
Best sega arcade racer artistic wise and gameplay are top notch, also the camera is flawless
To think, I played the original game in the early 80's on the Commadore 64 when I was between the age of 2 - 4 years old, and this version improved everything the original did and more. This game is the reason I love racing games. Going from this to the Need For Speed series (NFS:II for the start), Daytona USA, the Crusin' Series, to Gran Turismo and Grid, this was pinnacle racing fun! Luckily, I have this game for the PS3 and PC. Might go back to this tonight, though I need to start playing NFS: Unbound or finish Heat. So many good choices!
Imo Outrunners does have the magic.
It's an often overlooked gem. I think it is the best looking 2D/sprite arcade racer of all time.
Shame it's hard to find anything
I had no idea about the Daytona an Scud Race tracks. Amazing.
The Pc version of Out Run 2006 Coast to Coast is abandonware and easy to get anywhere on internet. 100% recommended
I think Outrun OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is the best version, specifically the PC version with the FXT mod, it totally revamps the graphics and even updates the control options to include steering wheel and force feedback!
Great video, and i do love this game. It's one of the best Sega racing games in my opinion, together with Sega Rally and ....... SCUD RACE.
I can't say how much i regret that never ported Scud Race to the Dreamcast - it's arcade racing perfection, i absolutely love the track designs.
I LOVE this game, and I love that I was able to consistently beat this game in the arcade, as well as Time Crisis 2 (on one credit) ❤
I've been playing the Playstation 2 version of this game, it is incredible fun. A great game.
It really is, and you’re possibly the best account name to reply yet … the best screen villain from my favourite movie of all time! 😃 - James.
@@SEGAGuys Ha thank you, Clarence Boddicker is my favorite movie bad guy aswell, I belive that character was very unique.
I have this game and absolutely love it on my OG Xbox and love the original on may Saturn. Love the music in the original and on part 2 also. Magical Sound Shower and Passing Breeze were my two favorite tunes.
The soundtrack is just superb isn’t it? It’s all part of that perfect package, but I do love Night Flight myself, that’s my go to track. - James.
I stuck 2 quid in this at the arcade on Sunday and then went home and got out my PC copy of Outrun 2006 which I'd hardly played.
I still play this on PC ( Coast to Coast version) . It works just fine, even with modern windows. It looks great scaled up to 4k.
I still have my psp and xbox copies. It's definitely a masterpiece of a game.
I still play it on my Rog ally.
Yes it is…say no more!!! I adore the camera response… sensual feelings while driving thanks to the cam!!!
it really sucks that this didn't make the backwards compatibility list
first time i played this i crashed around the third stage because i couldn't see through the tears.
I bought this for my 360 on the Xbox arcade, amazing game, the drifting mechanic maybe it so playable.
This is a hell of a masterpiece! Such a shame it isn't available anywhere legally today 😢.
Thankfully it can be played on Xbox 360 via BC and is relativity cheap these days (unlike Coast 2 Coast), but yeah it would be great to have a proper next-gen backward compatible version like we’ve seen with other games on Xbox Series/One X for example.
Can’t believe this hasn’t been ported in over 2 decades…
YES!! YES!! YES!! OutRun 2 is such a great sequel - I absolutely love it. I had no Idea Sumo were a british team, they certainly pulled off an amazing Xbox port (albeit working in tandem with AM2) - Which reminds me, I really need to get a new PSU for my Xbox, but until I then, at least I have the awesome PSP Outrun 2006 : Coast to Coast to keep me happy.
It's not my #1 all-time favorite Sega racer (there's so many amazing games to choose from), but it's a great game and truly excellent home port
Unless they sort the Ferrari license, we're unlikely to see it, sadly. But my GOD, OR2 and SP/C2C are divine. Genius doesn't age.
Outrun 2 on OG Xbox is one of the best original xbox game ever made in 2004.
Outrun 2 was the reason for me getting the OG Xbox 😍
I play Outrun 2 via psp emulation, upscaled to 720p with a 60fps hack on my Nintnedo Switch 😂😂
I do love this game! 2 is bloody hard. SP is much more forgiving!
the arcade with the whole machine which is moveable!!!
it is a masterpiece all time
Excellent!
I love this game that ferrari looks so good!
