    Just wanted to add: The chastity belts in Fury Road are also over their clothing, making it impossible for them to take care of basic bodily functions without removing them or soiling themselves. It's not just about sex, it's about basic autonomy.

    I think its important to note its not wrong to find women attractive, or even to find specifically powerful and violent women attractive. Its wrong to reduce them to the attraction and nothing else, which is what most action movies do.

      Yup. Most fighting females in action movies are absurd. I can only watch them without lmao if the scantily clad fighters are supposed to have superpowers or magical gifts or w/e. I mean, what idiot would wear 5" platform heels to shoot a weapon that *real soldiers* shoot from a kneeling or lying down position bc of the kickback? Oh right... the idiot who just got paid $1million to flash her tits at the audience *-_-* I like TWD, tbh. The ladies use appropriate weapons and wear appropriate clothing. The human interactions and responses to hardship framed in the TWD storylines are pretty realistic, imo. I can see myself behaving like that if I were to survive a similar apocalypse. Hypothetically speaking, ofc :)

He contradicts what he later concedes for a quip that, in my opinion, doesn't really land.

      @Autumn Potato BDSM is a variety of often erotic practices or roleplaying involving bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, sadomasochism, and other related interpersonal dynamics.
      Directly from Wikipedia
      Aside from the general advice related to safe sex, BDSM sessions often require a wider array of safety precautions than vanilla sex (sexual behaviour without BDSM elements).[10] In theory, to ensure consent related to BDSM activity, pre-play negotiations are commonplace, especially among partners who do not know each other very well. In practice, pick-up scenes at clubs or parties may sometimes be low in negotiation (much as pick-up sex from singles bars may not involve much negotiation or disclosure). These negotiations concern the interests and fantasies of each partner and establish a framework of both acceptable and unacceptable activities.[37] This kind of discussion is a typical "unique selling proposition" of BDSM sessions and quite commonplace.[38] Additionally, safewords are often arranged to provide for an immediate stop of any activity if any participant should so desire.[39]

  • @Nikkiflausch

    One big reason Mad Max Fury Road is so good at not-sexualizing its women (not saying it doesn't at all - but it's definitely doing it less than other movies) is that it was edited by a woman, Margaret Sixel, the director's (George Miller) wife. It's similar as with porn shot/edited/produced by women; the angles, highlights, focus is just different because a woman isn't as subjected to male lust as male editors, cinematographers, producers, directors. I'd argue that Mad Max being edited by a woman is the strongest factor for it being so not-sexist period. (Note how she only got to edit the movie because George Miller actively decided to have a woman do that job, so he asked her - not by a "normal" process of how an editor is hired. Talk about how men can (and should) empower and enable women with the power they have in the partiarchy, but not actually take their place.)

    • @jakobvanklinken
      @jakobvanklinken Před 5 lety +16

      I didn't know it was edited by his wife! Kudos! Maybe she isn't "subjected to male lust" as a woman, but she sure is as an editor. The language of editing is one still totally dictated by the male gaze. There simply are no female Spielbergs or Tarantinos,

    • @grisflyt
      @grisflyt Před 5 lety +36

      I think it has more to do with George Miller not being an American director. Directors who "challenge" the Hollywood tropes are typically not Americans. E.g. Paul Verhoeven, Ang Lee.
      Sexualization is a choice. I haven't seen The Avengers, but from what I understand, the one female hero in it is being sexualized. (Here's one Internet quote I base that on: "The Over Sexualisation Of Black Widow In Avengers".) Does Hollywood think the success or failure of the movie rests on this one female being an object of desire for the male viewers? You could understand it if it had been an all-female movie and sex being used as a selling point. The Avengers seems to take it for granted that the role of females is to be sexy.
      The USA as a whole is extreme. It is a very sexist society. It's not surprising that Hollywood is the cinema of the extreme. Hyper-sexualization and social conservatism are Hollywood tropes because they are American tropes.
      I'm afraid that you and Innuendo Studios give way too much credit for nothing.

    • @Nikkiflausch
      @Nikkiflausch Před 5 lety +47

      Systemic sexism is not a US problem, it's a male problem. Worldwide.

    • @grisflyt
      @grisflyt Před 5 lety +33

      Jannis Tenbrink, there's a huge difference between the USA and, say, Sweden. Nudie bars are pretty mainstream in the USA, but virtually unthinkable in Sweden. You cannot compare the USA to secular Europe. Most cable TV carriers don't offer Fox News, because it's considered an extreme channel.
      Money and status are very important in the USA. There are gold diggers in Sweden as well, but females are generally not impressed by those things. You certainly will have a hard time scoring a date if you start to talk about what you make and what car you drive. Women in Sweden expect equality in a relationship. It means both work and put in effort into the relationship.
      You may have heard of the Norwegian Skam/Shame TV series. They are making an American version. The biggest problem, according to a Swede in Hollywood, Per Blankens, working on it, is the American family. There are no parents in the Norwegian series. European teens are essentially independent by the time they start high school. They live at home, but they don't do things with the family.
      The USA scores high in traditional values, according to the World Values Survey. "Traditional values emphasize the importance of religion, parent-child ties, deference to authority, absolute standards and traditional family values. People who embrace these values also reject divorce, abortion, euthanasia and suicide. Societies that embrace these values have high levels of national pride and a nationalistic outlook."
      Those things are essentially dead in Scandinavia. Abortion is as controversial as chewing gum and walking at the same thing. A major reason for the American rejection of feminism is that it is linked to abortion. I feel like a stupid idiot moron just talking about abortion.
      So, yeah, Hollywood is extreme.

    • @Nikkiflausch
      @Nikkiflausch Před 5 lety +24

      There's absolutely differences. It's still a world-wide problem. Swedish movies are great in things like representation and not being shitty because the society is very socially progressive - they're still not free from systemic sexism. And Sweden is pretty much the top example here. Every culture has its own version of sexism; in some it's more, in some less severe, but it's definitely not a US problem.

    I'm not sure which is more annoying-stories which don't try to justify their female characters dressing all sexy for battle, or ones which do. On one hand, the latter know what they're doing is wrong and are trying to spackle the hole instead of fixing it; on the other hand, it can be kinda funny. "No, it makes sense. I was watching the anime "Maria the virgin witch" and what really made me amazed is that Maria is a black leather wearing sexy girl with a succubus and incubus as her minions and her being a virgin is literally in the name, but the show manages to talk about sexuality in a really interesting and deep way. It only shows Maria as sexy if she's happy and content, but when she's beaten and abused (as well as, uh... sexually assaulted at one point) the camera pulls the fuck away, hiding her body behind the objects, or only focuses on her bruised swelled-up face.
    I never even noticed before how often a female character experiencing pain is framed as sexy as possible. Thanks, sexy witch anime!

    Sucker Punch, the more I've run into it, really is a fascinating movie. Within the explicit text of the movie, the action scenes with the girls dressed in sexy clothing are all metaphors for the girls being exploited both in the metaphorical "brothel" universe (which is directly sexually exploitative), and within the mental asylum which is definitely abusive and probably sexually exploitative.
    In this context it raises an interesting point of comparison.

    I would be interested to hear your thoughts on 'The Neon Demon'. Probably at least half the scenes in that film feature scantily clad women/girls but I felt like the film makers did a really good job of taking the whole 'male gaze' aspect out of those scenes. The film really made you empathise with the female characters rather than framing them like objects for the male viewer to be aroused by. Only towards the very end (spoiler alert!) when they murder the protagonist and play around in her blood and guts do they start to frame those characters in a sexually suggestive way, but that sexual imagery is mixed in with the revolting images of blood and gore, so they still aren't really titillating.

    I say you're not allowed to bully Bayonetta for no other reason than because Dante, her predecessor, is also highly sexualized.

    • @sophiejones7727
      @sophiejones7727 Před 4 lety +5

      no one is bullying Bayonetta.
      1) sexuality is part of her archetype. It's not wrong to point out that sexuality is a form of power or to have women who use their sexuality to gain power over others. It's just wrong to portray that as the only form of power a woman can have (or at least the only acceptable form of power for a woman). Don't have a Margaery Tyrell without having a Sansa Stark. Bonus points if you also have an Oberyn Martell.
      2) it's not the fault of the female character that she's getting creeped on. It's your fault for enjoying it. It's not wrong to have a creepy scene: it just shouldn't get portrayed as romantic or played for laughs. Psycho is a horror movie.
      3) It's not wrong for a woman to show off sexually if she knows she is being watched. Nor is it wrong for the viewer to enjoy it, as long as the character knows the viewer is there. In games this can take two forms: either a fourth wall break where the female character knowingly flirts with the player or where the player is immersed in the player character's PoV. It's not bad to enjoy Triss topless in The Witcher, she knows Geralt is watching and you are Geralt. If the TV show shot the scene in the same way it's shown in the game though, THAT would be a problem. Ask yourself, who is the camera?
      4) You are Bayonetta when you play. That changes the context. She's not showing off for an unseen viewer (even if the game is third person), YOU are sexually humiliating your enemies as you kill them. Her promiscuous behavior reinforces the power fantasy. Typically this is a behavior we associate with male heroes, or with female villains. Indeed, Bayonetta falls into an archetype which is typically portrayed as villainous ESPECIALLY when the character is female. But in this game she's the protagonist (though it's a stretch to call her a "hero"), so that's nice.
      As you pointed out, Bayonetta is not portrayed much differently from Dante. That's most of the reason she's so cool. She's an example of a very sexualized character, but not an example of sexualization done poorly.

Assuming that you watched all those movies and that there were a whole lot of other movies to choose from that you didn't decide to use, I really want to know why you chose Sucker Punch.

  • @DarkeLourd
    @DarkeLourd Před 4 lety +2

    I got to thinking about the intersection between this character archetype being defined more or less as "sexuality as performance" and the inherently voyeuristic nature of film (and honestly lots of storytelling in general). Sometimes, performance is fun with no regard to audience; think air guitar. The sense I always got from Bayonetta, since you bring her up, is that at least within the internal logic of her world she's just that kind of person. The sexiness is for her own sake because SHE enjoys it, because obviously she isn't doing it for the sake of the angels she's about to murder. But that inherent sense of voyeurism means that ultimately EVERYTHING about storytelling is for the sake of the story's audience.
    So what can you do? How do you show it's okay to dance when no one is looking to an audience? Especially when analyzing media from every possible angle has become so common nowadays, not that that's a genie that could or should be put back in the bottle.

    Am I awful to say that I like both? I like the way they portrayed women in Fury Road, and in the the more "objectifying" films. I don't find objectifying objectionable. We all do it. We always have, and we've still progressed. (Apart from whining about objectification.) There's plenty of men in tv and film that are as hot as hell, and portrayed very much in ways that pleases women (and men). To be honest, I do dislike when women are portrayed just as barbie dolls, and dumb ones at that. The most nauseating thing is when these women gets cheesy lines about how much they "need a strong man," because they are women, and that kind of stuff. But I don't think we see too much of that any more.
    What I'm saying is, given that the woman or man is kind of "normal", and in "it would not be absurd to think that you could meet someone in real life with a similar personality", then I don't care about objectification, that they make stuff sexy and erotic. I like seeing beautiful men and women. Most people do. And I'm 100% sure that most feminists ALSO appreciate the physical beauty and appearance of whomever they're sexually and otherwise attracted to.

      It wouldn't be such a big deal if there actually _was_ equal opportunity objectifying, but there isn't. Just having attractive men in a movie isn't objectifying. It's about how they are framed, what the camera focuses on, what aspects of their character are highlighted, what role they play etc. A lot of this has to do with the 'male gaze', despite anti-feminists trying to meme that term to death. It's rare to see a man's crotch fill the entire cinema screen. But as you saw in this video, when a woman does a gymnastic stunt the camera will show you every inch of that body as close-up as possible, preferably in slow motion. (And this is often true even if they don't do a stunt as well.)
      Lindsay Ellis has some great videos on this topic regarding female characters and feminist theory.
