I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World:
Max Verstappen’s Views On Nelson Piquet’s Racist Remark
Max started off stating that using any racist slur is not right
“Everyone is against racism, I think it’s very straight”
“I think the wording that was used, even though of course we have different kind of cultures and [they were] things that were said when they were younger, is not correct”
“It’s not only about that word, using offensive language to anyone, any colour, is not correct. That’s to anyone in the world, not just to Lewis specifically”
He then responded to whether he was going to personally speak to Lewis about it
“We don’t need to talk, he has all of my respect like every other driver and he knows how I feel and think about his situation”
He was then asked if he was going to talk to Nelson to which he replied
“It’s not up to me to talk to my father-in-law. You’re not going to say, ‘hey man, that’s not correct’. I think he knows himself.”
“I don’t think he needs me to say what is right and what isn’t. He said it himself in his statement, he used the wrong word, so who am I to call him? I don’t think it will change anything”
He then suggested that it has been blown out of proportion
“It can be interpreted in two ways and of course people pick up on the bad side and of course it gets really blown, I think, out of proportion”
“I know Nelson personally and people of course label him as a racist now which I don’t think he is, but I fully agree that you cannot use these words”
He signed off by giving his views on Nelson being banned from the F1 paddock
“When you ban people, you are actually not helping the situation”
“You have to communicate. It’s really important, because if you just ban it’s not helping what you’re trying to enforce”
    Fast Feed
Lewis Hamilton is “incredibly grateful to all those that have been supportive within the sport, particularly the drivers”
“I’ve been on the receiving end of racism and criticism and negativity and archaic narratives for a long, long time, and undertones of discrimination”
“So, there’s nothing particularly new to me. I think it’s more about the bigger picture… it’s not just about one individual, it’s not just about one use of that term - it’s the bigger picture”
Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel added that “it is probably what [Lewis] has been through and his family has been through his entire life”
“Any form of abuse is wrong, so I think it was great to see that there was so much response from all of the F1 community and so quickly people responded and expressed support towards Lewis”
Alpine’s Fernando Alonso too feels that “definitely, there is no room for this type of comments and I think the reaction from the whole community was quite big”
“If it’s needed to take action, I think we will rely on support - what the FIA and FOM are doing”
“The most important thing from us drivers is to show the support to Lewis and we stand with him”
Should Nelson Piquet be banned from the F1 paddock?

Maybe it is a culture thing, that in other countries if they listen the colour of their skin they feel bad, it's like me feeling bad for being called white, kinda stupid. But whatever, if he said it with bad intentions then he needs to evaluate himself, cause you can't be treating people in a bad way just for their colour, religion, or nationality, everyone deserves the same amount of respect.

@Jaime Gómez I think Black people are called black in every culture. The way Nelson Piquet said what he said, was meant to be derogatory, that is what makes it bad. The whole idea about it being technically racists or not, is missing the point. We all can do better and should do better, that is how we progress. We want to live in a World where we are not focusing on skin colour for remarks about each other. We are advancing on this front, we just have to not let stuff like this, become a distraction. We should take action to make sure that it is not.... by taking action to address it and move on.

@@tonespeaks No. You're wrong. Piquet is brazilian and in Brazil, until very few years ago, it was very offensive to call a black person "black" (or "preto" in portuguese). The correct word to use (as mentioned in every school book in Brazil) was "negro". So "negrinho" ou "neguinho" literally means "little black". And it can be used in a nice way or in a demeaning way. It does not necessarily imply racism.

I don't mean the literal (translated) word "black", I meant you don't use a pejorative... like the English N word. I also stated that I didn't think using the word was technically considered racist.
The one thing we know for sure, is that Nelson Piquet didn't use the word in a nice way!!!! It should also be said that even he has acknowledged this. To take it one step further, Nelson Piquet has used this word in a much worse statement. It think it is fair to say Nelson Piquet does incorporate skin colour as part of his insult towards Lewis and that is what makes it racist. The word on its own doesn't make it racist.
If you re read my earlier reply you will see "The whole idea about it being technically racists or not, is missing the point." points to the fact, that I'm not deeming it a racist word.

I mean there's no doubt really. Piquet belongs to a generation that saw black people as lesser. It's the environment he grew up in.
And as a brazillian, a country the west generally views as mixed, there's a tradition of the richer white population bullying the poorer black population with racist behavior and remarks to appear and appeal to the white westerners, as if to say "hey, we look down on these black people too! We're like you!" Which does help their cases temporarily sometimes, but ultimately Brazilians are viewed as non-westerners and thus this is a very layered issue. Of the whiter shitting on less white person.

I also think that the British media could have latched onto this either when it came out, or maybe any of the other awful things going on in the sport right now, but as always they attack low hanging fruit, just as Lewis does. its really a massive shame. i think considering the consistent behaviour by Piquet, the ban isnt as bad as it would be if it were an isolated out of context incident like with Vips, but i still agree with Max that there needs to be communication and room for people to grow and change, no matter how old they are, and no matter what theyve said. ban and censorship culture only makes these problems worse. i also think generally this pressure put on max over an issue he wasnt directly involved in where hes asked to condemn a relative is a bit harsh. but i think hes responded to it wonderfully. i just find it all completely comical when F1 sitll races in saudi when missiles blow up right next to them and no one said anything when someone who literally molested a woman and put a video of it on social media got a racing seat. utter hypocritical clownworld. F1 should offer us escapism, if it cant then what the fuck is it doing? because all its moral preachings are performative hypocrisy anyway.

      i wouldnt joke about it but as far as im concerned Senna having died disqualifies him as beeing the best f1 driver of all times ; i mean if you would compare it to a game ; if you die you loose ... so as far as im concerned Prost pretty much won the rivalry and schumacher is better then Senna ; Unpopular opinion perhaps but senna has 3 world championship and so does piquet ; difference is one is dead and the other is still here to this day to tell the tale and i guess piss people off once in a while ... piquet also drove in a time where it was pretty much garanteed that one or two drivers wouldnt finish the season alive while in the 90s the cars were way much safer to the point that his death was a shock for most since it had been ages since a driver had died in f1 ;

Pinning it on racism is just a way for Hamilton to put the spotlight on himself. The term is used in many, many different situations. Specially in Rio, it's 100% part of their daily vocabulary. It's like word 'sick' for example: literally means you're ill, but also can mean something is really cool. Family members and couples use the word neguinho/nego to express affection, also when you don't know someone you refer to them as neguinho, in a very casual manner (again specially in Rio). The second example being the closest to Piquet's case (which, guess what, was born in Rio). When you don't know someone's name, don't care, or want to be indirect (not mention names) saying 'neguinho did this' would be one of the expected ways of saying it. It's exactly the same as saying 'some random guy did this'. That's it. Congratulations to Hamilton, F1, British media and everyone else involved. You all look like a bunch of clowns in Brazil, except for minority activists of course.

Nelson used the word little black guy, he did not use the n word which was used often in usa. Not sure what kind of horrible things Lewis went through but discrimination is every where. It is not just against people with different type of skin pigmenterion. When for example Lauda during RTL Plus F1 presentation named word "Polaken" referring to Kubica. Nothing was said about it, nothing! Even though this was said on live international tv. In Austria word "Polaken" is disrespectful way referring to Polish people. At least the German commentator, corrected Lauda. All of this looks to me as kind of propaganda. If you look at just the western world, all of us, we simply do not get equal chance ,that's it and this is true discrimination and its tragic. I live near what one could say a getto .Those people have practically zero chance of making it in real life. Kids growing up in such gettos, will have drugs, alcohol offered to them, they can be forced into ganges, prostitution. This people, is real tragedy but nobody cares, nobody seams to notice. All they care is about some saying the N WORD. You know why because it is easy. I mean most people do not give a darnn, only media does. And if media does care, it means people owning the media care about it, you know the ritch those ones that manipulate your life and manipulate your mind what you should care and think about, in other words it is propaganda. Of course saying about someone that he is a little black guy does not sound nice. When some boddy would call me little for sure I know it is not a compliment. But again it does not make you a races. I had the luck or perhaps the bad luck , to have worked in few country's, some people will like you some will not and some will make your life a hell. And belive me, no matter what country no, matter what skin pigmentation they had, they all descriminated. I mean I did alright, but I saw true racism and this in bigges corporations you can imagine. At the moment it looks like that Lewis is a little frustrated guy because he rides this racism wave, eventhough noting truly racesed was said. But what can you expect froma guy who sponsors Black's lives matter, a movement that only cares to disrupt our society and for sure they do not care about pour people. I think it is time to go for Lewis, he is not peace searching man he is not jett on that level. But I know he is trying, he need time on his own at this moment he has no peace of mind and does things that plays in to favor of what the media propaganda is doing. In a way he is beeing used and that sad 😔. He is a great very talented driver. But he is not the next Messiah. He has a lot to learn about life. He needs to talk to Nelson and apologize for the overreaction and for helping to blow this out of proportion.
