My personal things about millenia that I love:
-Warfare is a lot more interesting and a lot less tedious than other Civ-type games. They've combined the Civ 4 style doomstacks with the Civ6 style tactical combat somehow, and it works.
-You can indirectly control your cities through vassalage to reduce micromanagement, and actually get a bonus from it (reduced political mana drain). You can even specialise in this style of gameplay through certain culture picks.
-Overall feels more dynamic due to the Age system.
-opt-in supply chain economy. Things don't come CRASHING DOWN if your chain isn't perfect, but you get rewarded for making smooth supply chains. Its very noob and pro friendly.

    • @Cruor34
      @Cruor34 Před 3 měsíci +12

I agree with those, now some things that look awful:
-You have to rush through eras. I don't want to skip X tech, but if I don't the AI gets to pick the next age. So, you might have to skip gunpowder and now you have a "modern" army that shoots bows. Never would happen, weird. They need to tweak how you advance, shouldn't just be "get 3 techs" for most basic age.
      - You have NO setup options. Game speed? Nope. AI aggressiveness? Nope. Amount of barbs? Nope. Dry or wet? Nope. Hot or cold? Nope. More or less islands? Nope. Premade maps? Nope. Map editor? Nope. All this we have in other games, and all things they SHIPPED with. (for some of them)
      - No option to block or turn off the fantasy eras. Age of Heros I can handle, fine. Age of Either, I can't, and here is why: Once you get it, you HAVE to go to a normal age. So, you have steam punk things that defy physics of this world... then you have normal tanks/planes/riflemen. If you are going to have these ridiculous fantasy things, you need to KEEP having those things. Not have them and then go "ok time to be normal again but we still have rocket blimps" No.
      - The barbs don't seem to advance, they stay ancient. So you have B1 Lancers bombing barbs in canoes throwing rocks. Come on guys. Even in Civ 1/2 the barbs advanced in tech.
A lot of good ideas poorly executed. Game was rushed.

Tips based on the "mistakes" I have seen in the video
Note for the start: It's hard to justify anything other than Influence as a starting bonus. Influence is such a hard yield to get for the early portion of the game and growing to tiles as quickly as possible is such a huge benefit. What I believe the "optimal" start is influence passive, first building Dolman, researching scouting first, first culture into spawning units (if you manage to find a barb within the first 5 turns which should be easy) to be able to take on a barb camp with 3 warbands, then getting 1/2 scouts from there depending on how the game is progressing. Your next culture goes into a town (hard preference for lumber early), and then you just chain local reformers from then on. I can see the argument for getting scout first, but the initial border growth from finishing the dolman early will allow you to place a better town and then grow around that town very quickly.
1: If you have any access to the ocean, one of your first improvements should be a dock. The 5 food from the tuna that you get with the boat that doesn't require a worker is massive and with the Hunting NS, the 1 Expo XP would have been massive early on. With the dock and the lookout, local reforms would have generated 1 additional Expo XP a turn. "Naked" hunting camps are good in an pinch, but not something you want top prioritize over getting access to the water and Tuna.
2: The proper way to play Wild Hunter is to spam Bow Hunters to get more meat to get more culture to keep a constant chain on Local Reforms to increase your production and Expo so you can rocket through the tree at an accelerated rate. The timing push available to Wild Hunters when you get the final upgrade turning them into Crossbows but better, is insane to wipe out your neighbors; I struggle to think of any unit combo in age 2/3 that can defend against spear & upgraded bow hunters. The elephant unlock is hit or miss so you go bow hunter into improvement points on ivory/bone , into food, into the crossbow upgrade. You can back fill elephants and the other techs once you are done with these. Edit: apparently he didn't know bow hunters could harvest goods in neutral territory lol. Bow hunters is the 3rd strongest A2 NS (and my personal favorite) for this reason (behind Raiders and Mound Builders). Yeah, the realization at 52:00 mins is hilarious; 4x players and not reading, name a more iconic duo.
He corrected a lot of his early mistakes which is good to see. If he had known this, I wonder if he would have made the "correct" play of doing the town in the capital to the south to get a lumber town for production. Lumber is extremely strong early game (really all game) and with Bow Hunters and access to the water, you should have absolutely 0 issue with food. The only justification I could see for putting the first town in the capital to the north where all the scrubland is, is if you were planning on razing the free city to the north to eventually grow into the triple deer tile but even that would have been better as a second town (ideally with a pioneer and then absorb outpost). The plan would have been foiled with Rome taking it over but that info wasn't available at the time of the decision.
3: Don't build towns on level 1 vassals especially if you aren't going to integrate them anytime soon. Local Reforms is so powerful early game that you have to have a damn good reason to not use it on cooldown and the town on the coast city (that honestly shouldn't have been placed there) is not it. To expand on this, by turn 65, he could have been doing a Local Reforms and have the culture back up every 3 turns. Local Reforms last for 5 so you could alternate Local Reforms and whatever else very quickly to snowball out of control. The Local Reforms would have helped the production to pump out more bow hunters.
4: Art XP is insanely powerful early game and should be taken in almost every situation (especially over warfare when you have such a massive amount coming in) due to the interactions not only with religion, but the immigration ability to drag your new cities up to 10 pop ASAP. A good rule of thumb when it comes to picking XP choices is "can I generate this in my current situation?" If you cant, get that XP.
5: Getting Age of Heroes with an Expo NS is huge because of the lodge generating Expo experience. Expo experience stays super relevant throughout the game with buying tiles, doing explorers, or dumping into social fabric for up to 10% reduced tech cost.
6: Don't build towns for fishing villages. Towns need to be used to drive your border expansion into a more beneficial location and getting Shipbuilding already gives you a large growth bonus onto water tiles. The town for Tezcuzo would have been better going towards the hills (honestly it shouldn't have been done until the town was integrated and then the borders expanded because there was a 4 hill mining town above the 2 Irons).
7: @ 1:03:00 Its very expensive to rebuild towns, this is also another reason by you don't want to build towns on vassal's until they are pop capped (at 5) because it gives you more area to defend.
8: The +4 gold gold on farming towns is extremely mid compared to 450 upfront. Especially if you are dealing with Chaos, that gold basically buys you out of one Chaos event. You need 113 turns to repay that gold on a single farming town (which he has none of).
9: The second town in the capital should have been a Lumber town especially since the turn before he had the border growth but the city to the south (Edo) was a misplay and is eating into his capital's available tiles. You really need to spread your cities out super far from each other which is going to be a hard thing for a lot of civ players to break a habit on. Edit: Yeah, he is super boxed in on his capital.
10: Arts and a religion focus is pretty tough because you want to use your Art XP to get through the NS tree but also spread religion. This is where getting every single shred of Art XP and chaining Local Reforms on your capital becomes such a huge benefit. The number 1 critique of this playthrough is that for the massive amount of Culture generated by Wild Hunters, there is a severe lack of Local Reforms being done on the capital. Local Reforms is way too busted to not be having close to 100% uptime on.
11: "Utility ships are fine." Utility ships are insanely powerful due to generating 5 food for 0 workers and on tiles outside of your borders. You want to be relying on that for food as much as possible. You can also export the Tuna to your other cities to keep their growth up as well.
12: The intolerance age doesn't play around. You don't want to be creating a religion super early into the game if you have multiple smaller cities until you have the ability to immediately get religion in all of them.
13: 1:29:12 Buying the tile you put the town on and then putting the town 1 tile deeper allows you to get a 5 forest lumber town instead of the 3 and you're currently capped on Expo experience. You want to put your towns as far away as you can to gobble up more of the tiles since influence takes forever.
14: Poets are insanely strong for any Arts NS. See comment 10.
15: Make sure the second you finish a market you're doing a foreign import. This is trading wealth for a variety of different yields which is very high value. Same thing with stores. Edit: he missed out on probably around 60 Arts XP from importing charms. Even if you don't have good relations with your neighbors, you can still generate 1 culture from trade goods.
16: @1:45:00There is literally a second golden city right next to the first city lol.
17: Yeah, CTRL + Left click for a reminder. 4x players and reading man 10/10.
18: 2:11:00, you can put fishing boats on normal water tiles to gather fish. Its 1 less food than Tuna
19: hard agree on 2d for 4x games. There are very few strategy games that I enjoy the graphics of. Humankind and Viccy 3 and the only 2 that come to mind.
20: 2:26:29 Potato liking colonialism is sussy. Time to cancel him. (/s if it wasn't implied)
21: 2:27:15 Great masters is flat out busted. Local reformers on all cities is so disgustingly good that I cant even wrap my head around what could possibly be stronger than that. There is definitely a disgusting line of play for a game where you go Wild hunters for huge culture to be able to maintain actual cities, into crusades to take over enemy cities, into Great masters to have absolutely nutty cities all the time. This has to be close to the optimal going wide strat. (Sure raiders would be good, but fuck raiders and playing with that broken garbage).
22: Olympians into Scholars seems super strong if you can manage to maintain good relationships with your neighbors. Not sure what you would play for A4 NS though.
23: I am dying. He unlocked golden age, has had 2 cultures, and still hasn't used it. He is getting culture events every 5 turns WITHOUT using it. Please Potato, save me from this hell. Edit: up to 3. Please Potato the Eureka's aren't good. Edit: 4. 4 FREAKING CULTURE EVENTS. PLEASE POTATO I NEED TO SEE THE YIELDS. IM DYING. THE WHOLE REASON YOU PICKED THIS NS WAS FOR GOLDEN AGE. 3:05:11 HE SAYS ITS JUST CONSITENT BUT HASNT HIT THE "MY WHOLE EMPIRE GETS 20% YIELDS" BUTTON YET. Edit: 5, please, save me from this madness Potato. My family is being held hostage and the only way they can be freed is if you HIT THE FREAKIN GOLDEN AGE BUTTON. EDIT: 6 BECAUSE 10 INNOVATION > 20% YIELDS ON YOUR WHOLE EMPIRE. EDIT: OH THANK GOD HE FINALLY DID IT. 7 CULTURES AND HE FINALLY DID IT. It turned a 5 turn culture into a 3, you could chain these non stop for 20% bonus on your whole empire. It gave an additional 18 science per turn which is 72 over the course of the buff. 24: 2:56:06, and this is where the building cities too close to each other is really starting to hurt. His capital is so boxed in he doesn't have room for all of these improvements. The whole rant at 2:57:00 is basically the consequences of poor empire planning. He is SO boxed in on his capital now.
25: General tip for finding where your tile improvements are in your city, you can go to the workers screen, double click the tile, and it will highlight it on the city viewer in the bottom right. Helps to find stuff you want to delete.

That's barely 1 turn of science. That's 600 government XP points you could have saved right there instead of taking 3 turns off a tech. This can also be said for cutting edges as well. Local Reforms and Golden Age is more important than absolutely anything else you can do on your culture tree.
29: 3:27:25 realistically the bricks fell off about 2 ages ago. Having a loop for 1 brick maker? Sure. Having as much as you do? Absolutely not. You have been sitting capped on improvement points for a large chunk of this game.
30: 3:36:53 so your last 2 innovations have been generate large amount of X yield or gold. I wonder if you have done all the innovations available for your NS selections (I hope not). I really cant remember the last good innovation you got. Maybe the arts on bricks like 2 ages ago? Edit: He finally got a decent innovation so I guess its just rng on what you get. Still am not sold on innovation being amazing. Definitely not better than local reforms.
31: 3:57:15 Did he never unlock deep mines? Nope. Wild considering how many clay pits he had.
32: Terraforming is absolutely sick. 10/10 feature. I agree with the cost going down after some time but man is it cool to generate more land from no where.
No real comments for the last portion of the game. Once again, fantastic video @PotatoMcWhiskey I really appreciate you putting a full game on display here. I hope that my notes don't offend you, seeing small mistakes in your play will help me with mine. I learned a lot of lessons from watching this that will greatly improve my play and enjoyment of the game. I'm super hyped for the game and cant wait for multiplayer to absolutely dunk on some kids.

2:57:30 As far as I understood about this game, deleting old stuff to place new, better tiles is similar to placing districts over tile improvements in Civ: it's strictly better in terms of game mechanics, a good player should be routinely doing it, but it "feels wrong" for a newbie player.
I personally never did this in Civ until I saw your videos, because it felt being bad, considering I've spent resources to place the improvement, so why should I lose it just to spend even more resources to place a district there?? 😅
