    What a beautiful instrument
    I don't think any of the Vsl pianos can match this one
    It's best of both worlds..
    Warm, round and mellow
    And whenever you want... It can be savage and hard sounding
    It's amazing

    I have come to the conclusion that the VSL pianos are one of the most detaied sampled pianos ever created. and if one cannot afford to own a top end piano, these are the next best alternatives, Not cheap, but authentically sampled, to give you a lot of the sonics of the real thing. Compared to other products like those from Native Instruments, and Garritan CFX, which provide pre-mixed perspective with a sound that is therefore baked in, the VSL pianos provide the multiple individual microphone options, for even more authentic options, when dialling in your sound.
    After three years of using only the lower cost sampled pianos like Waves Grand Rhapsody, and from Production Voices (from their SFZ range which uses the free Sforzando sample player), due to a temporary rearrangement of my home, I had the opportunity to play the default sounds from my Yamaha CP33 stage piano, and it was such a difficult adjustment, It almost felt like I was playing like a total piano newbie, my timing was so off, and I really could never ever accept that transition, unless I had no choice. The limited number of sample layers, made the velocity transitions, more apparent, and this shock to my ears, just made my playing worse.
    My point is, even the lower cost sampled pianos for PC/Mad, which I had become accustomed to, were so much more playable than the 3 layer samples on the CP33. I can imagine the corresponding sonic improvement, and potential when I could afford to add a VSL or a Garritan CFX, or a higher end Production Voices piano sample to my collection. Always great to aspire. To keep hope alive. For me, just being able to play something chromatically correct on a piano, has been a dream come true. Owning one in itself has been a major breakthrough, cos once upon a time owning a "professional" keyboard like the Korg M1, was far beyond me. These things were things I could only dream about.
    When I hear these top end instruments played by Simeon who does them justice, with his superb innate musicianship, I am reminded that we must all be thankful, cos its so easy to aspire, and forget how far one has come, and the blessings that God has provided along the way.
    I cherish Simeon for being the most authentic demonstrator of these modern instruments, providing a service that allows us to appreciate much of the sound of these modern tools, and because the player - Simeon is a relatively constant factor - same person in all the demos, also makes it easier to compare the sound of different pianos.
    If it sounds good in Simeons hands - its a good piano.

    I now own the vsl CFX (standard library) and find it far superior to the very good Garritan CFX. Stage A is very successful on this panio, I really feel like I have the piano in front of me. It's not at all the same feeling with the D-274 and the bosendorfer imperial that I find too far away, impossible to feel connected with them... I have all the synchron except the blüthner, I really find that the CFX and the 280 VC are best suited for solo playing

      I own noire and while it has a great tone, I think a downside of Noire is it has just one (close) mic position. I find it sounding empty compared to multi-mic libarys because of a lack of mid and/or room mics, like there is something missing in the sound.

  • @headsman2023
    @headsman2023 Před 28 dny +1

    I have all the synchron pianos and I'm gonna rank them from the absolute best in my view to the worst
    Yamaha CFX
    It sounds very clear and bright, has the most powerful fortissimos and the some really good round tones in the pianissimo range, and the playability is just superb to others, it response to everything
    Bosendorfer IMPERIAL
    Warm and clear with a giant and grandeur resonance, not as dynamic as the cfx or the steinway but a touch easier to control, the playability is as good as cfx, the bass is a little bit warmer but less thunderous
    Bosendofer 280VC
    The absolute warmest concert grand that vsl have sampled, a little more dynamic then its bigger brother (imperial) but still more linear then the cfx or the D274, it has a very sweet round tone in the pianissimo to mezzo forte range, and above that everything is super brutally_bright, it's my most-used out of the bunch due to its closer, warmer sound
    Fazioli F212
    A sweet sound with a warm feeling, very close and delusional, best for romantic peaces, not so dynamic and not very resonant, it almost sounds like a felt grand, which is nice of course
    Fazioli F308
    A little bit high-midrangy, very strong fundamental frequencies, it has a rounder tone then any other val pianos (except f212) but the dynamics are not really there, the only thing that changes with velocity is the volume amount, it gets louder or quieter based on how hard/soft you're playing, but the playability is like 280vc and the imperial but they're a touch faster due fo their Sharper attack.
    Steinway D274
    The sound is crunchier, even brighter than the cfx and perhaps a little fatiguing, it's has the largest timber variation among the others, some of its lowest velocities are barley audible, but it has the absolute worst playability among all its friends, sometimes it doesn't pick up midi values and some notes just don't make any sound, especially in fast passages (i always wish that vsl would sample an American steinway d in their Stage b, cause this one is really bright and annoying, i personally don't like the Hamburg Ds at all)
    Hope it halps,
    Thank you simeon, your videos really helped me through this piano_vi journey❤

    good to hear you play... are you not recording from the line-out but from good external speakers? It sounds quite good already... although I think some DGX670 with CFX sound sounded really nice. By the way, are you sure your keyboard is not a bit too low for a good posture?

    • @PraiseTracks

      So this is being captured directly from the audio interface, not being recorded by an external microphone, this is the best way to present the sounds as they would be coming to you.

      Nhân, in the video I was using the FULL version and in some sections using the Surround to Stereo mix presets. Another major factor in getting a good result is to experiment with your controller velocity curves, as this can make a big difference. You can try different velocity curve settings in the Synchron Pianos interface and also check to see what options are available to you in your controller settings.
      Start with going to the extreme ends of the velocity spectrum so you can hear how it affects the sound and then work your way into dialing in something that sounds good to you.
      I hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching. Joyfullly!

    Hi Simeon. I bought the VSL CFX over the weekend and noticed when I use the same presets as your using, the tone sounds quite different to your demo at 15:00. I particularly like this tone and am wondering if you can remember how you have set the velocity curve within the VSL CFX?
    Thankyou

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před rokem

      Hello Richard, and congratulations on your new piano. Looking back around the time you mention, I am using the PLAYER - SURROUND TO STEREO Mix preset. You have to have the FULL version to get the extra mic positions. The only thing I noticed I changed was the pedal noise, I think they are too loud for my taste most of the time.
      If anything regarding the tone, I would have to point to the velocity response of your controller. The SL88: Grand has a softer touch generally than most and can almost be too soft in some instances. I typically leave the keyboard set to the LINEAR velocity curve and if I need to make any adjustments I do it from within the instrument.
      I would try going to the settings and adjusting the velocity curve to an almost slight concave shape to help it focus on some of the softer ranges.
      You can always try tweaking the velocity response in the particular preset to dial in what feels and sounds good to you.
      I hope that helps. These are such detailed instruments and it is amazing what you can get out of them.
      Joyfully yours!

    • @richardpenrose1968

      @@PraiseTracks Thankyou Simeon. Yes they are such detailed instruments. I have the FULL version as well. I was using the general player preset and not the surround to stereo version so will try this preset. Regarding the tone, I’m finding my Yamaha Arius digital piano is triggering the higher velocities too easily but when I tweak the velocity curve to a more concave shape every now and then I get a higher velocity note jump out. I will need to keep tweaking this until I find a curve that feels better. I have a feeling the SL88 Grands touch is going to be more to my taste than the Yamaha Arius. I also like the touch of the Kawai VPC1 but don’t own one.

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před 3 lety

      Yes, you need a good ASIO compatible external audio interface to get the best experience. With VSL libraries, they also recommend the very fast NVME M.2 SSD drives as their libraries process so many samples. At the very least you need a very fast internal SSD.
      Recording is all about listening, with the VSL libraries you also have great flexibility with their mixer and various mic positions.

      I currently have an i9-9900k overclocked at 5ghz on all cores with 64 gb of memory. Oh, there is no rendering, it is all in real time and with all of the extra overhead of playing, recording and live-streaming it can push things hard. You do have to be mindful of how many mic positions you use when trying to play live as each one exponentially impacts performance.

  • @okay1904
    @okay1904 Před 3 lety +1

    Merry Christmas Simeon. Almost every time I hear the Synchron pianos, the overriding impression I have is of a tendency to add way too much room sound and reverb. This tendency seems to be built into all their presets. I must be honest, in spite of your phenomenal abilities, this piano did not do justice to your efforts cos the room sound was so overwhelming as to make the piano sound indistinct. like a piano in fairy land - probably good for Xmas and Film scores, but even at that, the sound of the piano was somewhat lost in the ambience. On the plus side - this ambient disposition is absolutely perfect for ethereal dreamy wonderland music.
    Challenge must be one's hardware - needs to be pretty current, some of us will need to upgrade our gear before considering a purchase. And also buy their custom dongle. No doubt this is a sampled piano for professional keyboard players only.

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před 3 lety

      Yes, the room is a huge part of the sound. You can see me grab the reverb control a lot to turn it down 😳
      I also think where the piano was placed on the Synchron Stage definitely influences the overall sound as well.

I sold Pianoteq and a couple other libraries I had immediately after getting it. Does the Yamaha give the same impression of "weight" under your fingers as the Bösendorfer? I hate that they don't offer demo licenses for all their products (and all the time), as this is what got me sold on the Bösendorfer...

      OK, there lies the problem. There have been other viewers who have reported the same issue of not being happy with how the virtual piano libraries sounded and many were using this controller of a similar Yamaha model. It seems that the factory velocity curves seem to have problems getting the full dynamic range from most libraries.
      I would go in and try the different factory velocity curves to see how it makes a difference. You can also go into the SYNCHRON CFX preferences and edit the velocity curve from there. It is just a matter of making adjustments and finding the right settings to get the sound you are looking for. I hope that helps. Please keep me posted on your progress. All the best.
