This is such a weird coincidence, the voice actor (James Arnold Taylor) for randy in this voiced Leonardo in the 2007 tmnt movie, but then in the final version of the show Randy’s voice actor is Ben Schwartz, who voiced Leonardo in Rise of the tmnt

NGL, the animation almost reminds me of The Iron Giant and Randy was voiced by James Arnold Taylor. While the concept stayed the same, I am glad things got a major makeover to make it look like some Invader Zim spin-off (cuz Jhonen Vasquez worked as a character designer and the writing and humor are similar).
He would've been a busy guy at that point if RC9GN had JAT as the lead... He could've been at Disney one day, then show up to Wildbrain in Canada to do my middle school fave in Johnny Test, and then have him go back down to Fox to provide the VO for the Fox Animation Domination promos and bumpers.
Me neither. So many popular rock songs they would have chose, they not only chose Green Day but chose of all songs, Horseshoes and Hand grenades instead of anything else. I'm thankful for it, tho.

Might have even preferred it. However they definitely did right by changing up Randy's design specifically, the purple hair? Iconic and recognizable but this pilot design is just a little too basic? No wrong word, but he seems a mix of a lot of other similar characters in the underdog hero trope, he reminds me a lot of Peter Parker specifically for example. The animation in this pilot is way better than the final product, but the acutal art style and designs feel so lacking to me. Idk if its just me being so used to the Randy universe that we all know, but something about the character designs feels like they need heavy re-tooling, especially The Ninja. His suit doesn’t really stand out to me in any significant way. There aren’t any especially striking visuals about it to me (like the red markings on the final’s mask, gloves, and boots), and the exposed hands and visible sneakers just makes it feel like a storebought ninja costume. While this pilot is really cool to see, it also makes me appreciate Jhonen Vasquez’s creative influence on the final product way more.

It’s funny how much of the voice cast stuck around from the pilot and it seems Randy himself was one of the few to be recast. This portrayal feels so different from Ben Schwartz’, even if the same bones and personality is there.
it really is funny..!! this pilot randy kinda feels more ‘down to earth’, or ‘regular kid’; you can tell ben schwartz’s take on randy is a little more ‘held high’, and imo it kinda sounds more tense, even when randy is supposed to sound relaxed

This is so classic early 2010s late 2000s late night programming in terms of style and plot of the time then, its so 80s inspired but I love the current show's style because its so unique and trend setting rather than just a classic style which is nice but its better to be a trend setter stylistically for being openly different rather than a different iteration of a trend, although i love the vintage influences, i love the clean, modern and more globally influenced art style of the actual show it looks more cartoon x anime mix which is very cool for a western cartoon influenced by asian martial arts and history, rather than classic cartoons since it visually communicates the cultural mix and loved how they changed his story from a more typical teenage story to just a ninja who happens to be a teen boy w/o all the tropes like in this one, very fresh and creative like the style and show itself
0:08 this is something I wish the show had done more, show us more about the previous ninjas, at least just a still like they did here, we only ever got to see McAnfee, the first ninja and the musculous one, but it was to little to short.

Randy cunningham 9th grade ninja pilot, according to titmouse producer ben kalina, this original pilot had a different art design that looked similar to kim possible when it was pitch to disney xd, it even has a pitch bible that look entirely different than the final version, however disney wanted a more modern touchstone and retooled it, brought jhonen vasquez invader zim on board to design the main cast and help out the current style 😉

Though I loved the version of Randy Cunningham we have now, the pilot animation style really has its charms! I would’ve loved growing up watching a cartoon like this! I hope the original artists and animators of this style can make something like this again one day!
I love both this and the final show, for different reasons. The official show is extremely entertaining with it's humer and magic, but I absolutely LOVE the look of the pilot. The animation is more expressive, the characters feel way more like they're actual freshmen. The designs, though more simple, also lean on this. It shows a more of a real life setting for teens just barely entering high-school, being the youngest, the less cool kids. I'll say again that I am happy for the final result, but this was a very nice and eye opening look at how much this show has developed.
