My Custom ERTL Thomas & Friends Collection - Every Custom I've Made

- I'm back again today with another video showcasing my custom ERTL models. It's been over a year now since I've featured any of my customs on the channel, as CZcams hijacked the 3 showcase videos I did previously and set them to made for kids. Although I was reluctant to do any videos like that again, I've decided to take a chance and show off my collection of all the customs I've done so far. If this video gets marked as made for kids I'm going to be pissed...
So in this video I will go through each custom I've made and talk a little bit about them. Some require more work than others, sometimes also requiring a lot of scratch built parts. I also do my own custom paintwork and even make my own decals for the models as well. My main goal when making these customs is to make them look like authentic replicas that ERTL would've done back in the 1990's and early 2000's, or even now if they were still making them today. That being said, I often set the bar pretty high when I make these customs.
On another note, I'm debating whether or not I want to do another showcase video where I put my customs on the turntable and show them up-close. As I mentioned already, the ones I've done in the past have been set to made for kids by CZcams, and this prohibits anyone being able to comment on them. I'm a content creator who likes to engage with my audience, and CZcams's fetish of claiming my content is child directed and disabling comments only restricts that. I don't know how these kinds of videos will fare in time, but if I continue to have problems with them, sadly I'm going to stop uploading this type of content.

I really love your custom Ertls. The finish on them look so neat and crisp that it gives the impression of 'If Ertl continued to produce Thomas stock'. I think my favourites from here have to be Liz, Frankie, the Big City Engine from Gordon Goes Foreign, the two cab faced diesels who appeared in Escape and Victoria.
These are SO impressive, if I didn't already know what the range made and what it didn't, I genuinely wouldn't be able to tell what was real and what was custom. I dreamed of having so many of these as a kid, I can't tell you how much wonder this video inspires. Just extraordinary, you're a craftsman!
If someone shown me a picture of one of these and said it was an official ertl item I would genuinely believe them. These are great. Also Frankie, Nia, Rebbeca and RWS BoCo have to be some of my favourites.
That was the main goal when I made these customs was to make them look like ERTL themselves manufactured them. Take Class 52 for example... I'm pretty sure that if ERTL had made him, they would've used D199's casting, just like they did with Diesel 10. Same thing with other characters like Victoria and Helena. Plus I wanted to take an approach and make some characters that I'm sure ERTL would've made had they not packed things up in 2004.
What did you use to make nia Rebecca snd frankie
Nia was made using Thomas and scratch building a chassis. Rebecca is built on top of a Henry chassis. Frankie is a heavily modified Mavis on Diesel's chassis.

As usual I'm incredibly impressed by your ERTL modification work, I know you mentioned in this video you didn't want to go too much in depth, but in future I'd be really curious to see maybe individual videos on specific customs, like Nia for example. I'm sure you'll have a lot of people wanting to know the process.
Fancy seeing you comment on this video. I've actually been intrigued by your City of Truro custom and just recently watched your video on a more accurate Emily. My main reason for not going into a lot of detail on how I made my customs in this video is solely for the sake of time. However, I do have photos in my archives from some of the customs I made, including Nia when she started out as (believe it or not) Thomas. Maybe those combined with a voice over would make for some interesting content to upload at some point.

Fun Fact: illustrator Clive Spong confirmed some time ago that the diesel that pushed Thomas onto the lorry in Thomas And The Great Railway Show was in fact Devious Diesel himself!

@@MatthewsBranchLine I personally have always preferred Take-Along to ERTL for many reasons (durability, proportions, smart magnets, and rolling stock such as the magic box cars and the cargo-loading cars), but I won't deny that these ERTL customs are real professional-looking, and ERTL is much better Thomas merchandise than today's Thomas merchandise.

It doesn't surprise me that the fans do a much better job handling Thomas the Tank Engine than Mattel, who lately seems to be sending him to the scrapyard with each new bad decision they've made. If the ERTL line ever makes a comeback, you are just the person to make its models.
If you continue to make more ERTL customs, some suggestions are Proteus (made from Sir Handel's model), Paxton, Sidney, and Ulli (all made from the BR Class 08 diesel that was used for Devious Diesel, Iron 'Arry, Iron Bert, Splatter and Dodge), and Hannah (made from Henrietta's model).
To be honest, I'm kind of glad ERTL didn't last into the late 2000's, because I'm sure Mattel would've got a hold of the range and ruined it just like they did to Wooden Railway, Take-n-Play, and Trackmaster. A former friend of mine once said as well that he feels ERTL stopped at a good time, considering they managed to do Season 7 characters. Still there were quite a few things I would've liked to have seen made before ERTL stopped production, one being the narrow gauge coaches which apparently were planned after 2004.
On the topic of making more customs, I do have plans to make Proteus, and in fact have a Sir Handel currently torn down and primered, but I'm not sure if I'm going to use him to make Proteus or Albert. I don't have paint for either of them right now, but have made decals for each. I do have plans to make Paxton, Sidney, and Hannah at some point, but don't have the models here to do so.

Ertl really should’ve made a model of Stuart to go alongside Falcon
I think ERTL may have done Stuart had the range lasted past 2004, but at the same time I think that because they'd have to alter the casting to have the old funnel, that may have also been why they overlooked making the model.

Considering the amount of requests I keep getting of everyone wanting to know how I built her, I'm really considering making a dedicated video showing my process. Granted it will mostly be me talking and showing photos I took during the build, but hopefully it will suffice.

Nah, Daisy is supposed to have BoCo's chassis, they shared the same one which is why they're never on screen together
Correction... Yes, Daisy and Boco do share a chassis, however Boco has a Co-Bo wheel arrangement while Daisy has a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement. The gauge 1 prop was designed to accommodate a 6 wheel truck on the front for Boco which could be swapped out for a 4 wheel truck when the chassis was used on Daisy. That being said, there were still a couple times Daisy was seen with Boco's 6 wheel truck such as in the episode Bulls Eyes. Interestingly enough, Daisy and Boco did appear on screen together in the episode Rusty to the Rescue, although Daisy's model had a mock up truck made as the chassis was used on Boco.

I just watched your collection and I gotta say, these are really nice models, I especially like how you did the railway series accuracy for Thomas, Toby, Percy, and the Scottish Twins, and I’m just wondering do you think there would possibly, a Duck and Oliver in railway series accurate great western liveries in future ?
Duck is currently on the workbench and I'm waiting to find an Oliver to start on him. I'm looking into getting some actual GWR green to paint the models with, however the particular brand I want has to be imported and is a bit pricey. Only about $5 for the paint, but over $20 after shipping and customs...

And thank you for making them, Rob. There's no way I could've done it myself and had them turn out as good. In fact, if I'd have attempted making them I'm sure it would've just ruined the look of what is already a forgettable character. Needed to make this custom look as best as I could get it. I'm sure the decals would also work in OO, but would obviously need to be rescale to fit.

@@Robtheredengine Yes, I can make decals, but not professionally. I don't have a printer that can print white, so if I'm trying to put light colored decals on a dark surface, I have to color match the background of the decal to the surface I'm applying it to. You'll notice I had to do this with characters like Boxhill, Victoria, and Brenner.

Hey, uhh... Can you use cardboard to make Thomas wider? It always bothered me how thin he was, especially since he was next to Percy most of the times I ever saw him.
I would never recommend cardboard for something such as this. I always use something like styrene for these kinds of projects as its proper modeling material.
The scratch built scrap engine you refered to as "the dead engine" they also called him The Killdane Experiment made by 22 Tesla story. Which i have to ask, are you gonna make some of the scary stories that some thomas fans did? You know like "horror of the rails" "stories from the scrap sidding" and what not.
I don't plan on making any videos like that, but in terms of customs though, I would like to make Dudley the vagrant engine both as he was when he came to Sodor, and then also as he was in Demons, as it was confirmed by TheBuriedTruck that he was indeed scrapped after The Fat Controller banished him from Sodor. I already know what to use as a basis, and got a pretty decent idea of how I want to build both customs. Just want to try and finish some other projects before starting another one.

As far as a favorite, it's got to be Rebecca. I have no love for Nia as a character, so while I admire the work put in and the end result from a visual perspective, I actually quite like Rebecca and wish she'd been around when the show was still watchable. Personally I'd kill to have an ERTL Neville or Molly; something about those massive tender engines that really appeals to me, particularly ever since I accidentally bought an Ertl Murdoch (I may have misread something and paid a mint for the quiet giant... Oops...)
I've honestly been debating about doing a couple videos discussing how I made some of these customs. I do have photos from when some of them were being built, which I could use to make some kind of video with. I recall one of my viewers also asked a couple years ago now how I made my scrap engines, and I've wanted to do a video showing my process of making one from start to finish. On another note, I would like to make an ERTL custom of Molly, along with LNER 8783 from the Railway Series. Just need to get the parts and find the time and motivation to make them.

I'll keep that in mind. I've got a few customs I really want to work on, but just trying to finish up what I've already been working on at this time.
I wonder how were you able to drill out the portholes with no issue?
Center punch the holes first and make sure the drill bit doesn't walk. Actually had that issue when I attempted my Liz custom, and if you look at 0:34, you can see the far left Percy is the one I was originally going to use for her. That was a failed attempt at drilling the windows as they didn't match.
If you have ertl diesel 10 you gonna have to make the claw arm articulated like Bandai as for claw you gonna have to find small claw from different brand that can make claw open and close
I'm hoping to modify a Diesel 10 at some point. Just need to get my hands on one to modify it.

How did you make Nia, Rebecca, and Frankie? Did you 3D print them?
All 3 use existing ERTL characters as basis' with numerous scratch built and handmade parts added to them. I'm old fashioned and tend to make things from scratch rather than 3D print parts.
There is a 3d printable model of the cancelled ertl mike and the prototype bluebell. I wonder if you would make him in the future, if you have a 3d printer?
I usually don't bother with 3D printing as sometimes the quality isn't the best. Not only that, I'm kinda old school where I'd rather scratchbuild something instead.

Nope, never associated with Turtles, nor would I honestly want to after his behavior in 2021 and the kind of person he turned out to be. I will say that at the time, characters such as Brenner, Gerry, the scrapped engine, and scrapped D199 were inspired by his series. That being said, I still don't care to associate myself with him.

No I didn't, in fact Liz has never spoken to me for some unknown reason. However, Liz herself has stated that she doesn't mind people creating customs and/or artwork of her character, but has requested people ask if they want to use her for fan videos or written stories. This is because she doesn't want people changing Liz's persona and making her into a character that she's not, which is completely understandable. I don't intend on using my custom of Liz for any stories and it has only appeared in showcase videos.
Where do you get the water slide decals?
I buy the water slide decal paper and then print off the decals myself after I design them on the computer.

If you do make hurricane you could for his wheels use half the Chassie of an ertl murdoch also how about an ertl flora Theo Merlin and Lexi as well while your at it?🇬🇧
Personally I'm not too big on the idea of chopping up an ERTL Murdoch to get a chassis for Hurricane. Not to mention that even if I could find one in heavily used condition, people still want well over $30 for it. That's part of why I haven't made customs such as Mallard or green Bear, as people think that UK exclusives are worth big money, even if they're broken and damaged. As for making Flora, I'm open to the idea, although there would be a lot of scratch building required to do so, but Toby could definitely serve as a basis. Theo, Merlin, and Lexi on the other hand aren't characters I'm really interested in making at this time.
