    I love the 48. One of the best Harleys out. I'm 5'7" and 160lb, so the 48 fits perfectly. I rode a Slim S 110, and was awesome but way heavier and geared high. Not as good for squirting around the place. But yeah, highways, like a dream. That 110 is punchy, as soon as you are opened up, you need to be setting up to try pull the 600lb missile up to the next stop. Beast.

    I just went to the dealership looking at what was new. They tried to sell me the nightster. One bike stood out, the 48… I asked alot of questions and one salesman said they thought the nightster was going to be the hottest bike, but the 48 was the biggest selling model so far. The used 883 was second. They had a ton of sportsters with sold signs and on hold until approval came through. I had to buy one

    For the same amount of money spent on that (depending on exhaust) 87hp screaming eagle kit with labor, you can get a Hammer Performance 1275cc 120+HP kit. And they provide detailed tutorial videos and instructions to do the install/labor yourself. Awesome bike though!

      The Screamin eagle stage 4 kit is around $2k if you do the work yourself.. to get the hammer 120+ kit you’ll spend $5k on parts alone. I’ve very recently been looking into this stuff for my sporty

    • @jonnymac8925
      @jonnymac8925 Před 4 lety +1

      If you do the Screamin Eagle stuff yourself it is half the price of a Hammer 1275 kit. That being said the 1275 makes a shit ton more power and just has a sound of its own. There is absolutely no doubt about it when a 1275cc Hammer Sporty rides by you, it has a very distinct and bad ass sound!

    I bought my 06 Dyna Street Bob new and have ridden it from Arizona to Canada several times, and I can tell you that by 90mph and for long stretches it has lost a great deal of it's composure. I love my 22 Forty Eight with it's much taller chain gearing upgrade just as much on the open road at high speeds for extended periods of time as on the SB. I'm short 5'5" and older now 73. Been riding Harleys since the mid 60s and have always loved the Sportster as much as any other Harley, maybe more!! These rubber mounted Sportsters are a great weight for the open road at high speed and with taller gearing they are just about perfect in my opinion.

    I rode them modified and agree with your comments. If I could, I would have one in my stable because they are just so damn fun to ride. Not the bike for long trips even though many can, have & will. It sounds great, the mechanical sound and feel going down the road is just a unique experience that no other bike can produce. It's just so old school raw without building one from scratch which some of us aren't mechanically inclined to do so.

      Sportster is the last "real" HD. Imo if you are buying s Harley davidson it's because you want to ride an antique motorcycle. The new bikes Harley builds are so far behind the competition it's a joke. Theres no reason to own one. The sporty though is true to its roots which is why people ride harleys anyway.

    i am a great fan of harley, and i am looking forward to get one of those sportsters after a long wait.
    I've heard your opinion on this one, and everything, you are really a good, practical reviewer, thanks for such a good review.
    One of the most important modification which i want to do for my bike is also the stage 4 1200-1200kit, and the exhaust system with the air filter since i've seen your video , in which you've explained about it , which is rarity in youtube to find such an explanation, which is honestly i've been waiting for to see.
    I have two doubts: 1) How do you feel about the stage 4 kit, because as a person for me to come from a sports bike , would i feel bad about the acceleration or power of this bike and so do i need to change to engine to stage 4 apart from the exhaust and air filter
    2) why does everyone commonly use the vance and hines in their harley's as a gold standard, does vance and hines give you better performance when compared to the Screamin eagle exhaust .
    I need your guidance on this one matt, thanks.

    Check out the pipes from RB Racing. I built up (yeah way too much $$$) '20 Roadster. I use it to hunt sport-bike "non" riders in the CA Gold Country twisties. Just have a Stage 4 kit with RB Racing 2-1 black ceramic pipe. Other pref mods are Progressive 444 shocks and I raised the forks (lowered the bike) 1/2" in the triple clamps to steepen the steering head angle. The engine makes just over 80 Ft lbs of torque for 2300 RPM. Only other mods are Lucky Dave Seat and motocross style bars. 3rd & 4th gear thru the twisties? Wouldn't trade it for the world!!!

    This bike seems so much fun, tons of character! Getting the best of this soon disappeared Evo engine is very tempting, the new 2020 engines will certainly be better in every way but the raw character of the Evo will not remain. The main shortcomings of this kit are linked to financials (each one’s decision in the end), and the limits of the 48 chassis. I’d be interested to see this kit tested on a Roadster, could the extra power associated with better suspension and brakes make it a more valuable proposition?

    Why would you drop the bike are you 4'11" or something? Why do you need the drop?
    Also why do Harley owners buy so much HD badging, if I buy one I'm taking all that off

    You're right, the stage 4 is pricey; don't mean to be cuttin' your HD grass but you'd be doing anyone looking to get (a lot) more power out of their Sportster a disservice if you don't refer them to Hammer Performance. I love my Sportster, I've got a $20k in it (including price of brand new bike), and I jumped in with both eyes open. I could have gotten a Softail, but I'm 5'7" 145lbs and after riding sport bikes for 30 years, having a bike that feels like it was tailor made for my size is a revelation... so I built my perfect Sportster.

    I own the 2016 48 & still running stock. So with the cam upgrade, was it hitting a good lick? It seemed like it was pronounced more when you was at the stop light. I'm gonna get those short shots eventually but I sure wish mine had different cams.

      I run the S&S hooligan kit on my Iron which includes cams and 1200 jugs with a full stage 1. It crushes highway speeds, S&S claims it will make the bike 84HP and 78 ft/lbs of torque.

    Hey Matt, I have a Softail Slim 2018 and I would like to do a stage 1 now and 2, 3 in future. With exhaust do you think is the best performance for Milwaukee 107, 2in1 or 2in2 as test? Regards
    PS. I don’t like a sound very loud.

      @MattLaidlaw  Před 6 lety +1

      There is a lot that goes into that question. For one your warranty risk tolerance. Your relationship with your local dealer. The way you tune the exhaust. Exactly how loud do you want it? The Safest bet while still getting some nice volume out of it is to do a Slip on muffler.

    Hey Matt what does a stage 2 or 4 kit do to the fuel consumption? Miles per tank versus stock. It’s already a tiny tank
    Great reviews 👍🏼

    everyone will hate on me but i like the stock power of the sportster 883 and 1200 ...there is a '51 mercury on two wheels vibes to it.

    Hi Matt as always great video and as I am a lover of the Iron could you please provided me the information of the Handel bar set up part numbers. I know your a tall guy but what did you think of the bar set up?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  Před 6 lety +1

      Are you referring to the bar setup on this particular bike the forty-Eight? or something you saw on an Iron? I like these bars. They look good and they have a slightly higher rise than stock which is always good for me. I don't think you can go wrong with these.

    I wonder what a stage 4 does to the engine long term? Cannot imagine it is too good. Stage 1 is enough in the real world. Thanks

    • @sofaking1102
      @sofaking1102 Před 2 lety +1

      SE stage 4s are a bit more conservative than other performance mods. The engine will run a little hotter but long term reliability difference is negligible.
