- In this video I show you what would happen if we shined the world's most powerful laser at the moon. I start from a small handheld laser and move up in power and show you what it would look like from the moon and what the strongest laser would actually do to the moon.

There are actually mirrors on the moon left there from the Apollo landing that scientists use to reflect lasers back to earth to measure the distance. But for every 10^17 photons aimed at the reflector, only one is received back on Earth...

Just so y'all realize, a Quasar (most powerful light source in the universe) is around 10^40 W. 1 YW is 10^24. Which means 40k YW is NOT EVEN 1% of the power of a Quasar.

If you aim a q switched green laser at the sea of tranquility you will see some sparkles when it hits the retroreflector left by the apollo mission. You do need a larger telescope to use as a collimator, a new moon, and a very well adjusted guide. Did this with my photonics sciences class.
Sorry for noob question, but how does the Apollo's laser experiment to measure distance from Moon works?
I was okay with this, but if even the current most powerful laser can't be seen from Moon, how the laser from experiment get reflected back to earth from mirror put by Apollo's astronauts?

I was thinking the same, if we assumed Aldaran to be similar to the earth, what power would be needed to blow it up rather than just burn it to a crisp?

When I was attending language classes in Garnish Germany in winter 1995, I saw a group of about 7 young men and women pull some device about the size of a small car and it was a laser. They fired it at the moon twice. Using binoculars and a telescope looking for a reflection. Since it was so cold, I didn't expect humidity in the air nor inseci. However, when it was fired there was a loud crackling along with small bright lights and miniature lightening flashes high above. I was impressed.they kept their lenses on the moon for about 30 minutes.

it blows my mind that this is just a video game. fifteen or twenty years ago, astronomers fought tooth and nail for access to tools like this for just half an hour. i bought my copy on Steam.
man, imagine being in high school and the teacher just loads up Universe Sandbox. my old Physics teacher would've had a damn field day. there's _no way_ Miss Theresa isn't blowing up planets and disguising it as physics lessons if she's still teaching today lol.
