Although this story is typically considered a historical drama and a warning about fascism (and the way that collaboration with evil inevitably corrupts) there is also a sense in which it's a story of wrath and vengeance. Presented simply as the correspondence between two German friends in the 1930s, one of whom is Jewish, it eloquently depicts one of the men becoming increasingly poisoned by the forces rising in society around him, and the descent into wicknedness that this causes...

Boiling the frog slowly. Mass psychosis can't happen today? Already does--as recently as 2020-21. Blind trust in authority led otherwise rational people to do unfathomable things--to themselves. (Great story beautifully acted.)

Looking at the world today..namely the Unites States and UK, this rings an alarm bell. Start to pillorise people for their race, religion, gender, sexuality, for what they read, believe in etc and democracy falls
