Setting Proper Motorcycle Chain Tension (Specifically a Yamaha FZ1) Start to Finish Complete How To!

  • I recently did a video swapping a front 17T sprocket with a 16T and because I slacked the chain to remove the sprocket I included a tutorial on adjusting proper chain tension. Whatever the tension your manufacturer recommends may be different from the specs for my 2012 Yamaha FZ1 (All gen 2 2006-2015 Yamaha FZ1's are the same spec) but the process for setting proper tension is typically the same across the board, as follows:
Set bike on center stand, remove axle nut, loosen adjustment nuts and bolts, push tire in to give chain slack, pull tire back and snug up adjustment bolts and nuts and axle nut to remove any play (Plus I bang on the tire side to side just in case something is hung up causing any binding chain slack), FIND THE TIGHT SPOT IN THE CHAIN, continue tightening the adjustment bolts back and forth so that each side has the same amount of increments left on the back of the swing arm, once chain tension is where you want it, take the bike off the center stand and put it on the kick stand then finish tightening the adjustment nuts to the swingarm and finally tighten the axle nut! You're done!!
Thanks for watching the video hope you have SUBSCRIBED and I'll see you again on the next one!!

Thanks for this. I was wondering whether it was around an inch total (from top flex to bottom) or whether a full inch up top and a full inch on the bottom.

@Paul Velez you're welcome. That is a very common question and believe me most manuals don't make it easy to figure out either!

I have a 2007 FZ1 and its got 12k miles on it. I've maxed out the adjustment on the chain and was wondering if you have any insight into whether or not its safe to take a link out. I read most chains can get 20000 miles, but just wondering if you have any advice.

@Jbrew42 the fact that the chain is maxed out on the swingarm marks is because it has been STRETCHED to the max. A good chain that is tightened, cleaned and lubed properly may last 20k miles, but if yours didn't last that long and is maxed, it's at its life's end and I wouldn't cut a link and splice it back together. I would get a new chain. At the same time, I think that if your chain is finished, your sprockets might be as well, and it's technically best to replace the sprockets whenever you install a new chain. I know it's not saving you money, but it may save a snapped chain. I'd rather never snap a chain than save a little money. I'd suggest a D.I.D. or NICHE gold chain and sprocket set. Just FYI. I have a 2012 FZ1 with 13k miles and as shown in this video my chain has plenty of life left. Not sure why yours is maxed at 12k miles. Might want to look into how to take care of a chain and make it last longer on the next round. Hope that helps and thanks for asking.

@Shawn Martin I actually keep great maintenance on the chain, but I bought the bike with 10k miles so the previous owner probably didn't. Sprockets still look good, but like you said it's probably stretched and I suppose I'd rather replace it than have a cracked engine case lol. Thanks for your advice, one last thing. Which website did you use to order new sprockets and chain?

@@jbrew4244 I would just get a D.I.D. or NICHE kit wherever it's the best price I do know Amazon has them. I haven't replaced mine other than the front sprocket but that's because I went down a tooth: czcams.com/video/-TAj65viq8I/video.html

@@ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN I think he's asking what size is the wrench / socket. I'm looking for the same info. Also, did you torque the adjustment nut as well?

I have all the hardware and torque specs in the video. Sorry, I just didn't know what language that was and Google wouldn't help.
