  • Jim Stone describes the correlation between where the server lines up on the back line and the serving success. What we should take from this: Serving location matters! The numbers show that there's a significant drop in side out efficiency from the opposing team when the server serves down the line. However, it's also harder for the server to get a good serve down the line since there's less distance to travel and you may be flirting with the sideline; it's a balance between reward and risk! A second takeaway is that serving from the middle of the court is a less lethal location to serve from and the side out percentages are higher.

Watching players serve from behind zone 6 always drives me crazy. It does not create difficult angles for passers. Also, not surprised that serving line is the most effective. I learned the corner to corner serving philosophy from you Jim...my Sr Girls High School team is one of the best serving teams. Last season 26% of our serves did not come back over the net! Alot of tactics and variation packed into that 26% number but it started with your idea that corner to corner serves gives the server an advantage.
    Thanks!

Something I'm confused with the SO%: I (as the serving team) want a higher SO%, right??
If that's the case, then it should be a good idea to start serving 6-6, because has a 77%
Am I getting the stat wrong or it's something else I'm missing??

No, the receiving team wants to side out.
