War Horse - Replica WWI Mark IV - Male Tank Build

- In 2010 whilst working for Neil Corbould Special Effects I was asked to design and build a fully working replica of a World War I British Mark IV Male Tank. Dream project for me and with the help of a talented crew and only 10 weeks to go we set about our build. The first three weeks I spent on CAD sorting through all the intricacies of the design of a Mark IV Male whilst the rest of the crew prepared our donor excavator which would provide the track chains and power pack. It was hard work but a very rewarding build and thanks to everyone it ran faultlessly all throughout the shooting schedule at the Wisley location. Luckily for me at the end of the shoot Bovington Tank Museum were on the look out for a suitable replica for their summer displays and our tank fitted the bill nicely. He now spends his days at the best possible home for a retired actor. Presented in this slideshow video are a small selection of the photographs I took during the build - Enjoy.

I’m glad a tank museum was able to put it to good use... better than running the old ones risk breaking un replaceable history
There's only one problem with that tank .... It's probably faster than the real thing .
Tanks for showing .
There was a movie called Final Countdown about a modern aircraft carrier being transported back to the Pacific in WWII. Could you imagine this in the trenches of WWI?
@@shadowjack8 The Brits would for sure at first sight be fooled it's just another Mark IV, but a closer peek and they would be convinced it was Martian trickery right out of War of the Worlds or something. Just the fake rivets alone would completely baffle any mechanic of the day.
And a shitload more reliable! Amazing to think designers 100 years ago knew that we would have tracked diggers that made recreating their tank so easy!
@@aleksandersuur9475 fun fact there was a tank engineer in France who experimented with more powerful motors and made a whippet tank that could travel 60+ mph
It's pretty good with the sound turned off.
Guarantee the ww1 vets at athat time when they was yung would ov luved a bit ov trance music to sike them up to do serious battle
Agree
@@wendymcanena2421 Ok Boomers!
yeah dont want to hear that barry white
Would have been so much better with some period correct music. Think " Its a long way from Tipperary" etc.
Born in factories, delivered by engineers, immune to the bullets of the regular soldier, unbothered by the burdens of the land. The Tank. The future of warfare.
A film where they use real objects instead of CGI? Impressive!
dude straight up built an entire tank from an excavator base-
what's not possible anymore?
I have thought of building a Tiger I if I have enough money to buy a large excavator xd
A mech
If the apocalypse came. This tank would be perfect. We these again.
@@olivercajada2195 nice. I would spend my money on this mk.4 landship
Smart cause it will be reliable and last forever unlike the real ones.
Amazing 👏 You chaps have every right to be as proud as parents of this beautifully engineered and artfully created duplicate 👍😯😊🇬🇧 'three cheers'
The museum will cherish this forever. What a great build.
Awesome job
Could’ve done without that shite music
Would’ve preferred to hear Arc of the welding and grinding
PETER PIPER Complete shite, i couldn’t stand it at all
WHAT IS WITH THE MUSIC???
You can’t blame em, that was 2013
What do you expect from a dude called vince
1917 club mix!
I commend them on building a museum quality replica for a movie instead of just using special effects. I think the Tank Museum is absolutely the BEST possible home for the movie prop. They have the real tanks there, & the prop tank will be well cared for.
You boys have some golden hands!!! Respect, this is insane!!
Great photo session of a great significance, only it had a better soundtrack, it would have been 5 stars!
The soundtrack is rather odd isn't it.
Having had the great pleasure of driving this vehicle down at Bovi. I have just two things to say. Firstly thank you so much! And secondly what an amazing job you did creating it!
What’s it’s max speed?
@@harryjoe860 a few mph, very similar to the original tanks.
Imagine a modern-day built Mark 4/5 where everything has been upgraded to a level that it would be the true warrior in the fields. Just imagine a stronger engine, tracks designed with some suspension and capable of going much faster (say 15mph for the sakes of tanks), more powerful guns, thicker armor, the whole 9 yards.
And suddenly send it back to its birth years and witness the true shock of the unstoppable tank. A machine that itself would be able to last even up to WW2 until something at that time would be strong enough to take it out.
Thicker armor? Against any modern day anti tank weapon, thicker armor isn’t the answer. Composite and space armor is what you want. In all seriousness though it wouldn’t perform as well as you would think. There is a reason why all modern tanks are designed in the same way, it’s because it’s the most practical and effective design we can possibly make.
Great craftsmanship!
The finished project looks very realistic...well done!
What a fantastic build. A credit to you and your team😊😊😊😊
This gives me inspiration to turn my jeep into a ferret scout car
LOVE THE BUILD... SCREW THE MUSIC...
The first 1st world war tank which is designed via 3D-CAD and CNC-driven machines.
Extreme modelling 101!
The result is superb!
It is amazing! ! The feeling of the making person is also big. I also wanted to see the cockpit. Anyhow I enjoyed it a lot. Thank you very much.
It was painfully slow, but feared since the German's took a while to figure out how to stop it, if it didn't break down first.
With no suspension at all, and no seats for the infantrymen that were transported, no cover over the driveshaft, around the engine or the exhaust system whatsoever, it was a good thing that it moved slowly. These things were a death trap even when not shot at.
It's realy nice work, great. But the music ... why? It doesn't fit there :-/
The tank is now a model
@@j-play4325 how is that relevant
Fantastyczna robota !
Wonderful. Respect from Turkey.
That's insane but the good kind of crazy. Nice work.
man this thing is awesome.
was'nt expecting deadmou5 on a ww1 tank video, but i'll dance along i guess lmao
Not only faster but likely much more reliable! Great work! FR
Excellent fabrication, truly impressive work.
great video it's nice to see how it was built i can't wait to see it at bovington tank fest in june it does look just like the real ones fantastic job cooking with gas!
outstanding work..
Totally awesome job my friends!!!
Wow! Fantastic job!
Well done.
Fantastic! Congratulations!
I like that they brush painted it like tanks would have been in WW1
Браво! Отличная работа!
Amazing work! Well done!
Great work !
I love this !
Among the hundreds of films about the First World War, there is not a single one about tankers
I hope that they will finally appear
Incredible!
Great work!👍 I liked Mark III-IV--V.
AMAZING BUILD GUYS, JUST AMAZING!
What an interesting project, fantastic build, would have loved to do something like that.
David Horbenko this is tank in the battlefield 1 gameplay ps4.
Good slide show video. It would be more interesting to hear the details about the work being done. An amazing transformation.
Amazing build!!!
Totally amazing
Jesus, this music should be in "How it's made." Or a cheap early 2000s adobe flash game.
Well done lads!
Awesome work guys :D
Great Job! I thought I saw my schoolmate Ronald van der Most in the right hatch but that would be nearly impossible. 😀
Excellent job.
DAMMIT! Now I want one. 😁😂
I WUNT THE TANK BECUSE OF HOW IT LOOKS
Nice rivets collection :)
Awesome!
Great job 😉
Pretty late to say, but excellent work. I also like how Emhar kits litter the workdesk before Takom, Meng and Tamiya kits were introduced, lol.
Recreating ww1 tank! 😱 cool....... !
fantastic engineering
Amazing
Super cool Projekt,like it
Отличная работа!:-)
Excellent, thank you for posting. Just one question of thousands I could ask: how do you keep the tracks on? The original had the tracks retained in a runner each side.
PERFECT MY FRIEND
Churchill's "Landship". BTW, the rivet head bolts are clever.
Would have liked to see more about the construction of the cannon.
great history.
That is a well made replica
Great 👍 real good job
super cool 👍👍👍
Right........now to get 5 of my friends together and build this beast
you usually have to turn off the sound to listen to these vids or your eyes will cross and your brain will hurt, great tank repro though
Those hydraulic motors seem so much more efficient not to mention space-saving than the original cogs, chains and differential 😅 Nice work!
Cheers, they were and you could steer the whole thing with just two fingers on the joysticks, an absolute joy to drive.
Incredible
did you guys use steel constructed or is it made out of just thick sheets of galvanized aluminum? Also the cannon barrels or they just special effects mortars or with a fully functional weapons? and finally what was the reaction of Spielberg?
Highly doubt that fully functional artillery was used for a movie set
Awesome
So beautiful he is
Wonderful fab work! Please put your other photos somewhere they'll be preserved, perhaps by donating copies to the Internet Archive and tank museum websites.
Fantástico e medonho!
Abraço 😷
vous êtes fort les gars bravo ^^
I thought seeing the same tank in Indiana Jones sequel n°3…
greatjob awyay
How many cannons and what was your speed plus distance before (possible) breakdown of the engine, unless you fixed that.
Génial !
Excellent build!
Just out of curiosity, how much did it cost?
Later, Matt
what's the last song's name in the video?
Wow so that’s how markIV tank made
A Masterpiece
Very different approach to the newer female replica. This is quite a modern vehicle inside a shell, compared to Guy's one. Be fun to see them operating side by side, though.
How many cans of hairspray did you use for the chipping effects?
Wery smart processed.
Incrível muito bom.
wooooo so fuking awesome work man !!!
I've discovered your video because I'm also building a Mark IV Male. (Emhar 1:72) ^^.
Your project is very impressive, what you have built is extraordinary. Thanks also for the video, so that I can now properly mount the rails on the roof with my model.
the sheer amounts of Emhar 4001 models xD
What paint did you guys use?
Great bit of history and film history. Were the track treads bought off the shelf or stamped out somewhere? Assume the rivets were just heads spot welded on the inside?
What was the ballpark cost to build this thing to running order?
