    For 2020 KTM has totally updated the EXC line. But what are the changes you should pay attention to and are they really that big a deal? I've owned a 2014 500 EXC so I compare the new bike to my old one and give you a complete overview of the changes for 2020 (and yes, they are great changes).
    I take the bike out for its 50 mile break in ride and tell you my initial impressions of this beautiful new machine.

    That bike makes 39hp in stock US spec trim.
    The fuel map is running that bike near 16:1 AFR which is at the upper limit of safe, knocking out the screens / restrictor will take it nearly to 17. Scary lean, top end life is now compromised. I wish the map and o2 on the US bikes were calibrated to accommodate that bit they won’t.

    As much as I would love to have the latest and greatest 500, my 2016 is setup really good and the thought of having to setup a brand new bike all over again is a daunting task, not to mention the expense. Glad that you have a new one but I’ll see you on the trail with my thoroughly sorted first gen EXC

    I finally did the euro enduro tune and fmf pipe. Made a huge difference on the trails and climbs. Low end is improved big time. It also starts way better now at all temps. I am an average rider and it definitely made me step up a notch or two.

    • @BigRockMoto

      Did you track a change in fuel consumption? Maintaining my fuel range matters to me.. is your bike a 2020?

    • @powayimports4175
      @powayimports4175 Před 4 lety

      Unfortunelty i did not. I don’t do long trips with my bike so it’s not an issue for me. It is a 2020 identical to yours i believe. It does not seem to run too rich or“smell”. I own an auto repair shop and have been a licensed smog tech for a little over 20 years. I think the factory software really chokes the bike. The tune imo makes it run closer to design(before emissions ofcourse) Ofcourse mileage may be affected but it doesn’t seem too aggressive. Just makes the bike operate as you would expect. I was pretty disappointed when i got mine out at low rpm it could lug but had an un healthy chug about it. Again I’m not a very skilled rider. My purpose for dual sport is pure fun. And the bike now has a higher fun factor. If your in so cal and want to check it out before you’re more than welcome to mine out :).

    Great Review, I continue to ride a well set up plated legendary XR650R from 2001. However this review, is giving me temptation for orange kool-aid. Excellent review with the comparisons to past models and real world riding impressions. I agree with the wise advice to make power mods for smoothness and low RPM control, not WOT dragster. I would be interested in reliability reports with this new 2020 generation as I have stayed with Honda/Japanese to avoid headaches. Look forward to the next installment.

    • @BigRockMoto
      @BigRockMoto  Před 4 lety

      Hey Dr. J. you should get one. We all love the red beast xr650r but its time to turn over a new leaf... light weight, elec start. The 2020 is the best one yet for sure. Your point on the mods is right... I think all the power mod guys will be complaining why they get 40 mpg. I get 60 mpg.

    The 17-19 bikes do have the lithium ion battery. Also dirt rider put both the 19 and 20 bikes on the same dyno with the same operator. The 19 bike made 41 horsepower and the 20 made just a tick under 40. But peak horsepower means very little. What's interesting is the 20 bike made peak torque much lower in the rpm range and had a flatter torque curve, much more important. What that tells me is the new bike probably feels stronger from off idle to midrange, which is where most of us ride. Great scenery except for that idiot arsonist who burned down half the forest a couple years ago.

    14:08 “Cut the screens out of the exhaust pipe.” Don’t do it bro! If you live in Cali that would be removing your spark arrester, which is no bueno on state trails. A solution is getting a Pro Moto Billet Fastway spark arrestor end cap for $150. That encap is spark arrester approved by the USFS. It opens the bike up quite a bit, though now you start to take the plunge into tuner/EJK and intake mods...

    • @BigRockMoto
      @BigRockMoto  Před 4 lety +2

      I don't need more power this bike runs so well. And gets 60 mpg. The end screen is not part of the arrestor as far as I know but it may appear that way.

    • @ppod450
      @ppod450 Před 4 lety +2

    How’s the frame ergonomics ? I’m 6’2” and the 17-19 models were definitely more cramped for me (higher pegs and lower seat). Wondering if the 2020 version “opened” up the riding position. 🤔 Thanks!

      Yes it will still run smooth. I was having issues with the bike stalling the first ride when I would pull the clutch in to down shift when approaching a stop. I was on the road. Did it multiple times to me the first couple days of riding it. After i un-corked it, its like a different bike. Super smooth and more power then i could ever need.

The mirrors are rubbish, hard to adjust and my left one fell off on a ride and I lost it. Lights are also garbage too, but that’s what you get with dirt bikes.
