- 'When You Wish Upon A Star' - jazz piano tutorial. I was looking for another Christmas song to play and chose this!
In Japan, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, the song has become a Christmas song, often referring to the Star of Bethlehem. In Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway the song is played on television every Christmas Eve in the traditional Disney one-hour Christmas cabaret, and the gathering of the entire family to watch this is considered a Scandinavian tradition.
It has been a favourite of many jazz pianists, including Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett and many others. The version that I best remember was on Dave Brubeck's 'Dave Digs Disney' LP, it being the very first Long playing record (only available in mono) that I bought as a teenager in 1958.
The video and the midi file of the piano solo are free to download from my website - www.bushgrafts.com and the printable transcription is on my DVD and can be bought ($1.20) as a separate package (details on the website) - www.bushgrafts.com/shop - Hudba
This deserves a billion views.
This is so beautiful, yes. I am living in Denmark and it's true that "When You Wish Upon a Star" is played every so often at Christmas time - though not in this daring harmonization :)
There is a nostalgic magic to this song and you caught it all. Wonderful Christmas present! Thanks, Doug, for your talent, time, and generosity. The magic of jazz - priceless.
Wonderful! A lot of people will benefit greatly from these tutorials!
That was magnificent. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Man, I Amazed by the amount of great ressource that your videos and transcriptions give, it's more than any Jazz book I've came across. I'm gonna buy and print a lot of your sheets. Thanks !! Felix
Merry Christmas Doug...

Lovely Doug! like that final sequence.
Let's do "What are you doing New Years'" next year!
Wonderful!!!!
Wonderful! You should do "What are you doing, New Year's eve?" The song is yearning to be added to your collection!
awesome
awesome!!!what can I say..im a fan!!
Excelente armonisación y ejeccución , exquisita versión saludo cordial desde Buenos Aires Argentina!!!!
Wow ! You were a teenager in 1958 ? Me too ...LOL :-) Say what is the software displaying the sheet music ? Very nice the way it highlights the notes in red ...
Another great holiday song is "What are you doing New Year's?
you are as important as Santa on xmas day!
Merry Christmas, Doug! What you're saying about the christmas tradition in Scandinavia of watching an assortment of Disney shorts is entirely true (and entirely strange :D).
Gangster good🎉❤
Buon Natale e buon Anno
Absolutely love this arrangement! Great work! I’m not that experienced when it comes to playing jazz on the piano, played classical for maybe 5-6 years. Would love to learn this, but how advanced is it? Keep it up!
Huge thank for all the quality uploads and for sharing your knowledge and playing. Your videos was a part of my weekly practice regime while studying jazz piano at the university in Norway. Im not even sure I would have gotten accepted if not for your videos, as I played a version of your Some Day My Prince Will Come at my audition.
Ive recently been making my own tutorials for my own piano students and would love for you to elaborate on how you make the sheet music. How much "manual" post editing is needed to get the correct rhythmic notation and hand splits? Which program is used for the sheet music?
Merry Christmas!
Doug is a lovely piano player and I enjoy all of his pieces and in no way am I making comparisons but as an avid jazz fan I stumbled across another brilliant player by the name of Bobby Enriquez who's speed is so amazing it blows your mind - please check out this one song and you will be hooked also.

+Robert Bernard smh @ you. You should know better man
A disturbing troubled sortie into cacophony and delusion with a slight semblance of recognition and pretense of this treasured Disney classic.
I know this is old, but do you possibly still have the MIDI to this? I would love to hear this on my CFX VST. One of my all time favourite arrangements of it.
Sir, I hope you read this and respond. I love your work, and I have great respect for your artistry.
I would like to give you my business. However, I was wondering if the sheet music you sell
is just like the video examples you portray in your videos. I want to buy your sheet music, but
I need to know what they look like before I make a decision. Can you direct me regarding this?
thankyou!
+Mitchell Pryor Thank you. You can see a sample of transcriptions by visiting my website.

Hi Doug
which particular piano on the Nord is it? Maybe Bosendorfer or Old Lady?
(Enjoying the DVD I recently purchased from you)
Mal
It is the Yamaha C7 studio grand!

Thanks Doug. I recently bought a Nord stage 2 to replace a RD700GX,and have tried all the pianos including Yamaha C7, and must say I am disappointed with them all.
I am now using Ivory Steinway 11 (on a Recepetor VIP) and use the Stage 2 as a controller, when i do gigs
How do you find the Nord Piano?
