I am a (retired) teacher having taught in a jazz studies course at a tertiary college in Geelong Australia.
My primary interest is to provide as much information as I can to intermediate - advanced jazz piano students.
I record the video, audio (as an MP3 file on my computer) and as a midi file (on my NORD Piano 2) all at the same time so all are in sync.
Usually straight after recording, I add the comments that try to explain some of the melodic/harmonic ideas that I used.
The videos are assembled later - often with transcriptions (generated from the midi file by computer - usually PowerTracks or Real Band from PGmusic) and always with annotations that explain some of the techniques used.

'It Never Entered My Mind' (Improvised piano solo)
This is a new version I have done of this great Rodgers and Hart ballad. Fourteen years ago I uploaded to youtube this same song, but I used the same arrangement idea originally recorded by George Shearing. I did not always like this 1957 song - made popular by Johnnie Mathis. However, I have grown to like it as it makes an excellent song to play solo. The rather 'cheesy' intro of course, which just about all of the cover versions include, has to be played! 'What Good' - Michelle Benjamin with Doug McKenzie

Because of Covid, we hadn't done this for a while! It is another wonderful song written by Michelle. Michelle recorded the vocal over a simple backing track and uploaded the result. I downloaded the vocal track and added the accompaniment using a Rhodes patch on my Nord Piano 2. The notation was added later.

This is the Billy Joel piano classic - I like the version(s) of Mel Torme! Lends itself to a slow bluesy 12/8-ish feel. I have used an intro and outro that is more or less like the original Billy Joel version, and it is in the same key. It WAS Peter Nero !!! I cant believe I blanked out like this ! I'm online looking for his songbook my jazz piano teacher had me get when I was 17 ! Along with Oscar Peterson's books ! I was classically trained and the book combined jazz classics like this with classical pieces ! Another one I played was Body and Soul which mixes in Clair de lune ! I've put my piano aside for too long in life and now want to go back to it entirely... you've helped me reconnect with these memories ! And now I can find the book again ! Thank you !
