same here ... lol
Same here, as an electrical engineer I have to admit that ELRS is almost magic.
@@rontur9177 you know, they are doing what was done in the 80's with the commodore vic20 or Atari ST or Radio Shack TRS80, you have limited resources so you need to code smart and efficient as possible, nowadays with gigs of ram and i9's you see a bunch of spaghetti code everywhere , no code optimization at all, imagine one of the todays windows coder try to do something on a vic20 environment , using assembler ---> MOS CPU 6502 @ 1.02 MHz (NTSC) , 20 KB ROM + 5 KB RAM

getting back into fpv after taking a 2 year break. its insane to see how much the hobby has change in terms of gear and new protocols.
You're getting back in at a great time. The only real downside is everything has become more expensive due to covid and supply chain issues. BNF quads are great, ELRS is fantastic, things just work better than ever before.
Same!
All 8 of my quads run ELRS since the beginning and have been having the best time with it, I love it.
ELRS is unreal with all of these Kool features. Also it's so crazy the progression of this system has been from 1-2 years ago! Absolutely amazing, Thanks JB.
0:59 wowww that is real improvment. BRAVO!!!!! and thank you.
I'm transferring all my kwads to elrs 6 of 9 so far, gotta say I'm so impressed elrs devs and Edge tx devs are pushing the limits and its open source. Keep it up jb 👏
Same here. Just did EdgeTX to my TX16S and ELRS to three of my quads the other day. Seems these things are really getting momentum. The other radio link brands better be worried!
You know it's gonna be good if JB gets stoked😉appreciate you always sharing the knowledge 🙏
Joshua you are the best talk show host ever. So much fun I can't stop watching. "Thanks brother." And, thumbs up all the way.
Just here to say your videos on these complicated subjects are the best we have. Thank you and keep it up
I haven't flown in about a year. Watching this video I feel like I'm so far behind the eight ball after just a few months. So much has changed in the hobby, so many technology improvements.
The fact you had trouble getting out your intro from sheer excitement, made me smile lol
This is really cool, surprised it hasn't happened yet honestly
Really fantastic job the guys from ELRS are doing! 😃
Thanks a lot, Joshua!!!
Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Im an EE, and not a whole lot these days impress me but ELRS puts a smile on my face. Espressif makes some cool hardware and the ELRS devs put in some awesome work.
My hat is off. Great stuff from the devs. Really support this.
Very nice round up of V2 💪
I think we need a video on the VRx Backpack and how it integrates with the VTx Administrator 😀
Jeez. The more I watch elrs content it just intrigues me more and more!! Thanks JB
I'm upgrading to 2.0 this weekend. This looks amazing, WOW. I may start to move my remaining XM+ Receiver quads to ELRS 2.4 by summer.
ELRS turns power down to 25mw when you are not armed if you have dynamic power set to on and not an aux channel. That’s one of the reasons it’s important to set the arming switch correct with low being off. There is no setting for this because it just does it. You can set you transmitter screen to display the output power and see that it does this. The module screens also show the current value. Something of else to note is that the power sometimes jumps to the max setting if your LQ drops quickly. You may have not really needed the higher power level but it went to the higher power to give you the best chance of not getting a failsafe from flying behind an obstacle.
Well TBS added that feature to Crossfire as well and I set it up to dynamic power for channel 6 on my Tango as example where middle pos is armed, everything else disarmed - however I set "arm" and one of the "disarm" to dynamic power to have a chance to remain telemetry if I ever want to disarm the quad a kilometer away. But I must say too, ELRS devs have a good pace! And competition is good. And TBS are luckily no sleepsheeps :D I got some ELRS test hardware waiting here and will probably test it for a repeater with an antenna tracker next year.
Oh, fantastic to know! Thanks!!! 😃
So your appointed arm switch MUST be in the down (away from you) position when disarmed? There is no way to change this?
@@skyreadyrc5873 well, you could reverse it in OpenTX/EdgeTX.
@@skyreadyrc5873 I dont know about ELRS but with the Tango 2 / CRSF as I explained above you can use any channel and position.
Excited just ordered express lrs so will be looking at installing soon 👍😎thanks for another great run down .
I love that this video aired the day before i got my new ELRS hardware in the mail!
Been running the HappyModel stuff, but figured i would get a slimmer tx module to match my tx
Thank you for all the great and informative content!
You forgot my FAVORITE PART!! PWM! Native! These are the cheapest PWM receivers out there… and they are the best. It’s just amazing what these devs are doing. I know you don’t fly wings, but now you can, cheaply.
2.0 offers pwm natively from a Happymodel ep1? How?
Finally they added aux channels with full resolution. This is super cool.
Fantastic coverage of v2.0 JB! Thanks a ton for putting this all together 💪
This was a perfect run through of the top features. You covered pretty much everything people will care about. Maybe the only other thing I would have added personally might have been megabauds, which further reduces the super low end to end latency if you're using ETX (and you should be), other than that, this was a great roundup 😍
The higher the baud rate the lower latency but reduced range correct?
@@terpsquirter7107 nope. That’s the packet rate you are thinking of. Baud rate has no affect on range.
@@WezleyVarty oh okay sweet is there a good article to read Amit baud rates and what they do exactly?

@@terpsquirter7107 baud rates are a very generic concept in any serial interface. A quick google search should provide a ton of info on what the rate changes as you increase it :)
Great video JB... I've said it in the past and I will say it again, I run Crossfire but ELRS is going to be a MAJOR contender, I cannot wait for the Spring... I will be using ELRS though I am still keeping my TBS Gear... To Be Continued... Thanks JB...
Jeez JB! You're killing me! This is awesome!!
Haha, I knew I would be able to use my mambo with ELRS! Great video as always
Can I just say that as someone getting back into the hobby after a long break, this shit is flipping amazing. I'm watching all your elrs videos in order and they just keep getting better and better! I bought a jumper t-pro (with the elrs module) to replace my 9x and I'm getting sooooo excited to try out elrs
i love how happy this makes you
Love how this project is growing
ELRS is simply the best. I'd be surprised if any other control link is commonly used in 2 or 3 years.
Do you mean only for multi-rotors? ELRS seems to be poorly conceived for general use. I'm a little surprised that the design is so inflexible, but then I don't know much about the history of the project. Instead of 250 Hz for four channels, why not give the option for 50 Hz for 20 channels or 100 Hz for 10 channels, etc? Don't get me wrong, I think the ELRS devs are doing some really impressive work, but even in 2.0 it will work for only the simplest of RC airplanes.
@@podunkis Sir - can you please use your intellect to BETTER this ELRS system? Your raw thoughts are genius - I have no idea of the limitations of the ELRS architecture, but I love the fact that you are challenging those limits....AND BEYOND! C'mon man we need your mind in this hobby!
@@podunkis I am curious with how cheap FCs are now why planes need more than 4 channels, I get people still fly them hardwired to servos for simplicity but thats so wasteful nowadays with modern microprocessors.
@@spikester I'm not sure what you're proposing as an alternative to hardwired servos. With a simple plane it's usually necessary to have 4 servo channels and one throttle. Adding flaps requires one or two additional servos/channels, depending on how you want to set up the mixes. Sometimes it's nice to have a separate servo for the nose wheel with different mixes than the rudder. That's six to eight channels already. I have one plane with a cargo bay and drop hatch. If you want to add a directional camera, then one or more additional channels.
@@podunkis I'm only pointing out its a massive waste of bandwidth for something that could be multiplexed over a few channels, not like you need the ridiculously low latency. 😉
Now THIS could well be the Christmas prezzie I wanted. 🥳
you're AWESOME!!! and only getting better!!!!
Oh man. That’s an amazing release! Devs are straight ninjas
Wow there on top of it I cant believe all this time and it's the free devs that are dropping the awesome updates
LOL!!! Giddy lil school girl. Was laughing right along with you.😂
Love your passion JB, awesome review!
It's class. Feels like I've got into this hobby at an amazing time with all the open source developments over the past yr, like Edge Tx, ELRS, Betaflight ! I'm in the middle of switching all over to ELRS. I've had no problems with Namimno Tx and Happy Model and JHEMCU ceramic rx with WiFi flash. The elrs configurator is great. Firmware build process is straight forward. Got namimno rx's for few more. One problem I ran into was issue with F411 flight controller. U need to switch UARTS with VTX for them. Thanks ELRS devs!
How is namimno TX 2.4, is it better than other modules?
@@surjitsinghdeo6533 I only have the one type of Tx and can't compare. I'm pleased with my purchase tho, taking a punt on the unheard of company. JB mentions that the Happymodel one has had good feedback from users.
Except now there are very restrictive rules, making FPV de facto illegal for use in a ways we did it before.
@@KrotowX Think positive. Like most things in life; if there's a will, there's a way.
@@redcaoimh3127 Yep, at least around my city there still are some good spots, reachable in reasonable time.

what a time to be an FPV pilot, ELRS lua, BF lua, you can control everything through your radio now.
There is love for the fpv hobby, then there is Joshua bardwell so hyped over technology that seemed impossible 5 years ago! I appreciate you're excitement and GOD DAMN THINGS ARE GETTIN GOOD! 🤘

It would be cool to see a discussion with the devs about what’s coming next. What dream features they have. What dream features you have. Etc. great video!
Im so excited for ELRS!
Im already a satisfied ELRS customer but this update is seriously bad ass!
Great Job Bardwell
I moved from xm+ to Elrs, best move I done. Given me so much more confidence that I'm not going to fail safe.
Big credit to the devs, the work they are doing is amazing and the speed it's progressing is hard to keep up with.

haha, extremly inspirational Patreon promotion at the end ;) well done!
ELRS 2.0? I didnt even bother to try out ELRS yet (since my CRSF tango2 works just fine). Guess I will take a look at it - but at the same time it's a bit overwhelming what those radios can do these days... great vid!
Hi Josh Great video on the ELRS 2.0, I haven't decided yet on switching over from crossfire, but it is looking like it will be better to. Thanks again for the information.
I don't see Multi-Bind. We have 8 or 9 Crossfire (OpenTX + a couple of Futabas) controllers and countless Crossfire drones. It's so handy to be able to pick up any controller and fly any drone. My partner likes the Tango II and I like the larger Radiomaster T16 and Futaba 14SG. Of course configuration and channel assignments have to be the same on every drone, but that just makes life easy in and of itself.
Multi-bind is so integral to ELRS they don't even call it a feature. Binding is controlled by the binding phrase. Flash the same binding phrase to any number of modules and any number of receivers, and they all will bind when powered up. Of course, you can only power up one at a time, but that's to be expected.
I have the same binding phrase in all my ELRS modules and when I need to fly an ELRS quad, I just grab any of the modules and it's ready to go.
Thanks
Love all this
Love you mate !
if you don't have ELRS yet you should its cool to follow along with development and how fast it's progressing
Just getting it into my little plane now. Bloody excited to be honest. What a great time with the V2.0 stuff.
Very cool I’m still not convinced its worth jumping from CRSF to ELRS when i have a bucket load of CRSF RX’s and lets face it once the link is setup i never touch it again and have to date never had a CRSF failure. I hope this pushes TBS to develop some more neat features but to purchases 10/15 nee RX’s and a new TX module…. Naa
In short: FANTASTIC !
Well this is dope as frig
Also I just noticed your toolbox in the background, that's also dope as frig. Much nicer than the folding table. Honestly you could sign that table and auction it for charity. Us fpv dorks would definitely have a bidding war over JBs og table
ELRS is really pushing the hobby forward. And its so cheap!!! Release 2.0 is just amazing, the home WiFi connectivity makes life SO much easier, I found this out when moving from RC1 to the release. This project is well worth committing to.
Excellent video as always Joshua I think you made a error regarding dynamic power jumping to max power on then staying on max power if its on the bench.
Rather the elrs module powers up on the lowest available power and then it will connect to the receiver but as we fly away it will then raise power as required.
I'm still waiting on 900mhz receivers with PWM outputs for fixed wing builds but also hoping Josh gives it a try someday to experience the hobby's roots. If you're burning out on quads, fixed wing is a whole lotta fun.
I started on fixed wings but multirotors are way more fun for me.
ELRS 2.0 has an option for 5 full PWM outputs. I recommend the matek receiver if you go that direction.
I've seen the 2.4ghz receivers but not any 900mhz stuff yet. I'll definitely check again. Thanks for the recommendation!
I only bring up the fixed wing stuff because there's been a ton of variety these past few years with fpv planes and might be worth another look. Especially in combination with bi-directional ESCs (4D) and better servo loops allowing for stunts/tricks that quads can't do (infinite knife edges, infinite inverted yaw spins, flying backwards, etc)- all the advanced stuff that you could easily articulate that FliteTest is afraid to try :D
Nice
Regarding Model Match - I had a receiver number set in the Models --> Setup screen of Open TX. I then went to the ELRS LUA script and set Model Match to "On" and then down to Bind to re-bound the receiver. I did this with 3 different receivers and model match is working.
Hell yeah!
I'm still probably on an RC for 1.x if I remember correctly, maybe I should update all my stuff, this looks reaaaaally enticing 😅
😅 9:50 The dynamic power now on 2.0 starts on the LOW POWER instead of the max power you mentioned (it's the behavior from the previous RCs).
Insane!
Idk why you would still prefer other links over elrs
I'm hoping ELRS comes to the rest of the RC world as well.
Here is what i want ! Get inav and others to connect using elrs over home wifi
You are way too cool Bardwell. Thanks as always for the amazing videos. This one was great as well, looks like I'll be updating my radio and whoop shortly.
Pretty neat update. I just want ELRS to be as simple as TBS stuff because I'm an impatient idiot.
Hmmm, still debating if I should make the swap from R9 I really like my native built in support for R9 receivers with my Jumper T18, I don’t like having a external module and not really in the market for a new radio
If it's working for you, no need to spend the money.
It’s great to see the innovation. Especially innovation that will drive other brands to create new features as well but I have to be honest bardwell. I’d never, (maybe once) use any of those new features.
I love the features and the wifi connection options. One of the things I really like about the TBS Rx is that you can easily use the channel breakout board if you are going to fly it without a flight controller. Are there any ELRS receivers that will do direct channel output for planes etc?
The easiest way to do this is to use a CRSF to PWM converter. However ELRS only has four full-resolution channels (channels 1-4) and then the remaining aux channels can have up to 128 steps of resolution if you are using "wide" aux channel mode. You can also flash a firmware to give five full resolution PWM channels but that's it. So if you have a lot of servos you need to drive, Crossfire is a better choice.
@@JoshuaBardwell I heard this is something the devs are working on for 2.2. Full range channels for other types of vehicles.
@@JoshuaBardwell this what put me off getting into EXPRESSLRS. I fly fixedwing 98% of the time and lose pan tilt camera of most my planes.
3:02 this is so cute that Joshua has blurred this wifi password. Looks like I have to cancel my flight to US to still his internet...
Next will be the development of openHD
I hope

The excitement has me laughing ahaha
OTA is pretty well supported on IoT platforms, it was just a matter of time ;)
Hey, JB (lol… like he's going to read this)
But if you have Wi-Fi, you most likely have BT as well.
I think if you reinstall the BT drivers, you may find that it fixes the issue.
really hope the elrs team can help us export the telemetry data via bluetooth to smartphones. this can be really useful to track flight status

Thank you for the great video! I just got my ELRS gear today and am setting it up. Everything seems to work fine but somehow my TX doesnt connect to my home wifi. flashed the TX mit the SSID and password set but doesnt connect. it just keeps launching its own acces point. does anybody know why/how to solve this? Thanks a lot!
My Happy Model TX module is currently running ELRS V1.X.X as are the receivers because V2 was not out when I put ELRS on 6 different quads with EP2 receivers. My question is When I upgrade the TX and RX modules to the newer V2, will I need to re-flash the version of Beta Flight on all of the FC? I think all of them are 4.3, but will need to check
JB - what would be the best RX for playing with an FPV airplane using ELRS? Thanks for all you do!
Hey JB the kid and I are using the Happymodel v1 module for our elrs mob6.... we would love to switch over from tbs to all elrs with 2.0 update but woried about the spi rx that is in our mob6's. Looking at either running our other quads with crossfire for now or switch over to ghost. It is just us two for now racing at the park... what are your thoughts on sticking with tbs for now or switching to ghost until there is a more stable elrs module?
ELRS is really AWESOME! But, the TBS T2Pro have some limited features for ELRS modules or are they the same without limitations?
Pretty sure that if you turn model match on for one link you dont have to turn it on for all (as I think you suggested). Perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying.
The great thing is it works with frsky r9
19:16 As I understand it, CRSF theoretically has the capability to function as a device network, where if your RX and FC and VTX were all connected to each other by CRSF, in any order, they could all "see" each other and then you'd get this hybrid functionality you describe where both the FC and RX could send commands to the VTX. But... that's theory, and it looks like ExpressLRS has figured out a different way to get the same result. Maybe not as elegant, but an inelegant solution which works today is probably better than an elegant solution which only works in theory...
As Far I know what you mentioned is tbs cloud and you need any account and fusion module to go online and connect everything together... EXLRS does the same thing (kinda) locally...
@@nellson.angelloFPV TBS cloud is a thing but that’s not what I was talking about. The actual underlying protocol of CRSF is a device network, so it doesn’t rely (in theory) one on device connecting directly to another.
Such that one Crossfire
Yes my 3k prebuilt didn't have WiFi or Bluetooth. Had to get a pcie WiFi Bluetooth card to go in it.
Wooohoooo
Valeu!
Can I still use my r9 system with my qx7s with elrs2.0? I changed the baud didn't do the mod. Running r9 with r9 mini and r9mm receivers...
Now when we can configure our betaflight through our ELRS wifi
Expresslrs is impressive, however I will not switch from crossfire yet for two reasons:
1. Crossfire receiver has configurable outputs, it gives a lot of flexibility in configuring model. You can connect via sbus, inverted sbus, crsf, pwm, ppm or whatever. You can connect flight controller over crsf protocol and at the same time connect servo to pwm output bypassing FC completely (to control lights or landing gear or whatever you want). This is unbeatable feature for me :) Of course you might force your FC to do this but how much hassle it is. With CF it is done with two clicks.
2. I do not feel difference in latency between 50 Hz and 150 Hz refresh rate, so I don't care for high refresh rates.
3. CF is 20% more expensive for receiver, however paying 25 euro for CF or 20 euro for ELRS - does not make any difference in my opinion.
What is the range of ELRS telemetry? One feature that tbs is working on is allowing receiver to transmit telemetry on higher power. I find it very wrong that I loose telemetry much faster than control channel. Telemetry is important to log gps position in case of model crash.
Telemetry range is tens of kilometres even with the small 10x10mm receivers, then matek RX have PA 100mw output and diversity if you want to step up. I'm not sure where you're looking a at prices but EP receiver costs around 12EUR. ELRS even allows you to tune the amount of telemetry vs control link data to suit your needs!
@@deltageek7177 didnt know that. Thanks for pointing this out.
