    These tips are for Minky fur, which is made of polyester fibers. This will not work on Dry Clean Faux Furs. Do not wash Acrylic or Rayon blends.

    I had just bought a fluffy blanket and My 2 year old got chips on it so I cried knowing I had to wash it. I searched up and down to see what I can use when I ran into this video. I used baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, borax and soap and as soon as I took it out the washer it still felt soo soft my fear was the dryer. I put it in a big dryer for 12 minutes and I when I took it out it was warm and super fluffy. I am REALLY happy I used this method

      I am so happy this helped. The key to washing my blankets is to keep it simple. No fabric softeners, fancy soaps, and no heat (water or air drying).

    I have purchased about 5 Minky’s and seem to “ruin them every time”. I tried Dreft, I have tried Vinegar and baking soda, but the silkiness goes away. I have a brand new one and it is so silky compared to one I have washed with Dreft, then vinegar. Any suggestions? I am beginning to think once washed they will never feel the same. Don’t get me wrong they are still soft, but silky cool feeling is gone.
    Please help so I don’t ruin my new one.
    Is there any way to save my older ones?
    Has this happened to anyone else?

      First, you should be aware that there are many different kinds of Minky Fabric, both high and low quality. Low-quality Minky will have a drastically shorter life and will wear out. I spend hours and hours searching for the highest quality Minky, therefore I feel comfortable guaranteeing that my blankets will last for decades.
      Now, I am not familiar with the product "Dreft". It may or may not be part of the problem, I don't know?!?!?! Sorry. I can recommend any soaps like the brand "Seventh Generation". When you buy soaps that say "Eco-friendly" or "Environmentally friendly" ensure that you are using a simple soap without extra additives, fabric softeners, and unnecessary chemicals. TRY THIS: Wash large blankets alone, and only 2 small blankets per cycle. Wash in warm water, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 2-3 cups of vinegar, NO SOAP. After the first wash is finished determine if the banket feels softer. If not, repeat the wash cycle with cold water, 1/8 cup baking soda and a cup of vinegar, not soap.

    Am I able to use the Gain detergent on my plush blanket? Also, if not do I need to wash it with vinegar so that the softness don’t go away? I wasn’t sure if I should use vinegar bc I was thinking that it might damage the washer. Is the drying process the same for an oversized plush throw blanket?

      I was also wondering what oil spray u use when using the wool balls when drying

    • @blanketsbybrian
      @blanketsbybrian  Před 2 lety +2

      Gain might work. When I look for a detergent I will buy the one with the least amount of ingredients/chemicals. I can always depend on detergents that say "sensitive skin" or "Environmentally Friendly" to be safe for my blankets. Minky & Plush fabrics are made up of artificial fibers which make them very easy to clean. When a detergent is full of fabric softeners, scents, and non-essential additives, the chemicals will cling to the fibers and over time will create a buildup / and greasy feeling.
      Adding baking soda and vinegar to the wash cycle creates a chemical reaction or "oxygen bubbles". Oxygen in the water is the key to cleaning these blankets.
      As for damaging your washer I can only speak about my own experience. I have used Vinegar and Baking Soda in my washer for over 10 years in the same washing machine. No damage yet.
      I would tell you to find an essential oil that is clear in color to avoid the possibility of stains to put on the wool balls.

    What wash setting do you use? All the info online says delicates with cold water and shortest cycle time (my washing has 13 min or 20-30)? What about the spin speed and soil intensity? My big fluffy blanket was so soft but now half of it is stiff and hard mostly on the right side and I don’t know why. It looks dirty too even though I use a lot of detergent. My washing machine does not have a drying function so I just hang it and air dry it

    • @blanketsbybrian
      @blanketsbybrian  Před 3 lety +2

      It doesn't matter, you can choose whatever you like. I would stay away from hot water. The fabric I use is nearly indestructible. Use any length of time depending upon how dirty the blanket is. There have been times where I might just run a blanket through a rinse cycle with warm water and it is enough.
      Fast spin cycle.
      NEVER USE Laundry pods or fabric softeners.

      @@blanketsbybrian Hello so I did this with baking soda + vinegar. I used 1 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup baking soda. Ran it through the washing machine once for 20 min and then again for 13 min with just water (meaning no baking soda/detergent/etc) on the cold water setting. I then air dried it by just laying it over my treadmill in front of the window since it's a really heavy blanket. It's 200x240 and weighs 3.5kg/8lbs. My blanket feels soft and there are less areas that are stiff/crunchy but that fact is that I want all of it to be as soft as before and there are still some slightly stiff areas. What can I do to solve this? I have never used fabric softener in my life. I just always used detergent and ran it for an hr and I also don't wash it a lot especially not during the winter which is basically most of the year because it's freezing then. Since it's hotter now, I've been taking the chance to wash it. Should I run it through again with the baking soda and vinegar? The tag says 100% artificial fibers and wash in warm water only. I'm obsessed with making it soft and fluffy as when I first got it because this was such an expensive blanket and it hasn't even been that long especially since I don't get it dirty and barely wash it so I don't understand how some areas are crunchier and harder.

    • @blanketsbybrian
      @blanketsbybrian  Před 3 lety

      @@elithluxe7568 You are on the right track. If it still has some "stiff" spots run it through another rinse cycle. Maybe just a 1/2 cup vinegar or even plain water.
      If you have a Clothes Dryer that has an "air dry" setting (no heat), tumble dry it for 30 minutes, no heat, and then lay it out to dry again. I tumble dry with "wool balls" (buy on amazon) for 30-40 minutes because it will fluff the blanket.
      Sometimes, soaps and detergents can be stubborn and it might take several "washings" to strip them out.
      Side Note: You may have a super-efficient washer, This means you need less soap. Cut way back on the baking soda until you find that magic amount that works with you machine. Try 3-4 tablespoons of baking soda ( 1/8 of a cup) and slowly increase if needed.

      Hi Georgina. Thank you for asking. There is no right or wrong answer. I use 1/4 - 1/2 cup of baking soda & 1/2-1 cup of vinegar. You can't put too much in. (within reason.) Really dirty items more . everyday cleaning less. I also use vinegar in the fabric softener cup instead of that yucky blue goo. check out this information page on my website. I am always changing and evolving my laundry routine the more I learn about GREEN CLEANING. blanketsbybrian.com/blog/wash-care-instructions/
      Sometimes I use Hydrogen Peroxide instead of vinegar. It too has an amazing effect in the washer. Cleaning clothes is all about breaking the "water surface tension". that is what cleans clothes. not the bubbles.

    • @blanketsbybrian
      @blanketsbybrian  Před rokem +1

      I have a suggestion for this problem. Try to not over-dry items, especially polyester! Dry sheets* & Wool Balls will not help with Static Cling when any items are over-dried. Polyester is even worse than cotton, but try drying your items up to 97% dry. If you take them out before items are 100% dry this will help.
      Second tip... Polyester, Minky, and Faux-fur products CAN'T handle ANY heat. It will cause so much static cling that you can power a home with it. Tumble Air Dry ONLY, no heat.
      When you use these tips, wool balls will work.
      *Don't forget, Dryer Sheets have fabric softeners in them. Fabric Softener is "death" to my Minky/Faux-Fur blankets!
