William Russell (Ian) and Carole Ann Ford (Susan) are both still alive. They're 99 and 83 respectively. William Hartnell passed away in 1975 and Jacqueline Hill (Barbara) passed away in 1993.

My timing asking this question has not aged well!

@@therewatchprojectWell, Carole Ann Ford is still with us... as are a number of future regular cast members from the 60s. Hopefully still so when you meet them. :)

    Great to have you back!
As has been pointed out, William Russell and Carole Ann Ford are still alive :) If Russ makes it to November he’ll be 100! I’m always amazed and pleased that he’s still with us. There are a surprising amount of the 1960s companions still around considering many of them are in their 80s now.
I love all of the acting Hartnell does with his hands. That was something that was very important to him, always having his hands in the shot doing something to keep things dynamic when the camera is closed in on his upper half.

Welcome back. I think there are even some 1970s episodes where nearly all the main cast have since passed away. They were struggling with some of the later DVD releases finding actors to talk about certain early stories for the commentaries. Those commentaries tended to be recorded quite a while in advance too.
It is clear William Hartnell's holiday has helped energise him. IIRC this was the first major break he'd had since the start of recording the show.
As interesting as this episode is, the pace really slows down. I think a legal drama/criminal investigation without a clearly defined villain might have put off some of the younger audiences at the time. The Millenius culture seems interesting, clearly modelled on Western mid-20th century society with a few obvious twists. They seem to be a little more advanced than our 1960s time travellers in some respects. I find it odd they find the concept of using fingerprinting as investigative tool baffling but I suppose it's possible the people of Marinus don't have clearly defined fingerprints but that could be established in dialogue.
I've probably spent far too much time speculating about the logistics of this strange planet. How could so many seemingly disparate cultures exist on the same globe and only be barely aware of each other? I can only imagine Marinus is large with oceans between Australian sized island continents that are spread around the equator. Each continent must be rich in a variety of resources, so there is no real drive to go exploring. I suppose if all the sea water is acidic, ocean travel might be very difficult. Perhaps the Voord live in a land near one of the ice caps where life is much harder and they were the first to create ways of travelling long distances by sea. It also looks like artificial flight was never developed either, maybe they don't have birds to inspire them.

Your observation about Hartnell's confident handling of a fluff has reminded me of something to do with "Red Dwarf". In one episode, Timothy Spall (before he was a well-known actor had a guest role, and in a scene being recorded before a studio audience (something he wasn't used to) he fluffed a line and tried continuing on with his scripted speech; they had to stop him, because if he'd carried on it would've trashed a joke, and it was more important that the audience got to experience the joke as intended. (I've probably explained that poorly.)

Timothy Spall was already well-known pre Red Dwarf - Auf Wiedersehn Pet was a big hit in the 80s.

That's a great story, he would have spoiled that audience reaction for sure. I want to watch some Red Dwarf now!

Terry Nation was fascinated by America. Millennius is based on his idea of an American city.

Definite JFK vibes in this - not least when the conspirator was shot in front of the assembled crowd to stop him spilling the beans, very Jack Ruby/ Lee Harvey Oswald which would've been fresh in everyone's minds in early 1964.

I think fans tend to think of this episode as a highlight of the serial, but to me it derails the wider story. It probably benefits from having had a break before watching it!
