you need to look into the law before mouthing off about "trademarks". IN GENERAL the bodies are not considered "original" because they are designed to fit the human body. Second, after they sued dean i went through the head stocks and they are trying to say that head stocks from the mid 1600 (on a yuk) are somehow "their" design. Sorry but Gibson is full of shit.

Seth lover repackaged it into the familiar PAF shape we know and love. All I can do is re-iterate what others have said in the comments section:
    1. O.W. Appleton made the first single cutaway guitar electric guitar and went to Gibson asking them if they would be interested in making said guitar they basically said there was no market for it.
    2. Dreadnought design also copied by Gibson.
    3. Openbook headstock 18th century mandolins
    4. F hole design on Gibson ES335 - violins
    5. Violins have an archtop.
    6. A. H. Merrill developed first achtop guitar 1896
    7. Paul Bigsby also developed a single cutaway guitar after OW Appleton but before Gibson. The headstock of those guitars where basically copied by Fender becoming the Telecaster. Also built electric mandolins and created a tremolo (vibrato) system.
I think the parent Gibson company need to really re-evaluate its history before throwing any stones.

long live Ibanez! I am 49 and I went through a period as a teenager and well into my twenties here in the south when everyone around me was like "you aint shit unless you play a Gibson, a Fender, or a Gretsch in a southern rock blues/boogie band. So what did I do? I caved to peer pressure so I could hopefully play in local bands. I sold an Ibanez prototype identical to the one Satriani used on Not of this Earth, sold my 83 charvel super strat, a jackson king v prototype and a bunch of other shit and went through a period of playing a vintage 65 strat, vintage 67 gibson sg, vintage 76 black les paul custom, etc. These were insanely expensive, anxiety inducing instruments to say the least. While loving Hendrix, Page, SRV and so on, I did this to satisfy the extremely limited aesthetic expectations of people other than myself. My one true love that no musicians around me at the time were prepared to appreciate much less understand was Frank Zappa. Thank God (Zappa) that despite the instrumental acquisitions, I spent the majority of my time studying orchestral scores, jazz, and the comedic symphonies of George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks and Redd Foxx. Kids don't waste your money and more importantly your time, trying to acquire these "classic" instruments. They are little more than empty objects, rock and roll talismans purchased by naive musicians at great expense in the hope of achieving some form of imitative magic that will result in their becoming major label monster motherfucker rockstars! Well I got news for you folks, no vintage gibson or fender, to say nothing of their inferior modern brothers and sisters, will transport you back in time to jam and party with the gods of classic rock and roll. I don't care how many pairs of thrift store bell bottom pants and creepy disco shirts you happen to own, or how much incense you burn, all you're really doing is ritually sacrificing your hard earned cash to the ghost of Robert Johnson at best, or to the shareholders at Gibson et al at worst.

revisiting this. It's hard to believe that Gibson (or any other manufacturer) can't see that PLAYERS get no advantage by playing an "authentic" Gibson over a lovingly-crafted "copy". It's not counterfeit if it doesn't say "Gibson" anywhere on it. That doesn't mean it isn't fair to use Gibson's designs without permission or paying a license fee. But if someone makes a better SG than Gibson can make how is it "better" for anyone except Gibson to buy the Gibson instead?

so much about Gibson's "revolutionary developments": from O.W: Appleton website: In 1943 Appleton took his guitar to Gibson, to see if they had an interest in manufacturing the model. They told him that they couldn't imagine someone playing a solid-body electric guitar.
App attempted to patent his instrument, but as a musician from the small town of Burlington, Iowa, he didn't have access to a patent attorney. He sent letters and money to folks who advertised themselves as patent attorneys in the back of Popular Mechanics Magazine, but they merely took his cash. During World War II, as manufacturers dedicated their factories to the war effort, all guitar production ceased. Appleton stopped pursuing a patent.
Almost ten years later, in 1952, Appleton received a letter from a friend at Gibson. The letter read, "Well, App, you see our competition (editor's note: that would be Fender) has finally forced us to come out with your solid guitar. Sure wish we had listened to you back in 1943." Included with the letter was a brochure for the new Gibson Les Paul Model. In frustration, App threw the letter out.
Today, App's story is largely forgotten. And although Gibson's R&D department took credit for the design of the Les Paul Model, you have to imagine that they were influenced by a nearly identical guitar presented to them a decade earlier by O.W. "App" Appleton.

People dont like Gibson because their prices are too high and their quality at times isnt there to support it. If they really cannot drive down the price, they should do an overseas sector where they make cheaper les pauls, ones with propper binding and everything (like epiphones but just called Gibson and having the Gibson headstock). People would eat that shit up in a heartbeat (including me)

    • @bestplans9051
      @bestplans9051 Před 5 lety +3

The problem is both reputation now and they've boxed themselves into a corner. Their reasoning for exhorbitant prices (they say) is quality and American labor, if they ship mfg overseas will they cut their prices in half or more to bring them into the price point of their competition? No!
Do they make the best quality guitars on the market? Also NO! But they DO manage by far to charge the highest prices for general available guitars. Is it special? Hell no. Anyone can buy the same guitar anywhere. For the prices they charge they should ALL be boutique guitars let's be honest. What they do make is a guitar that relies on it's name and history to sell to people looking to buy their credibility instead of earning it. It's no different than the kid at school who can't play basketball and shows up in a $150 pair of Nike's for the faux creds. I've seen Joe Satriani play a $100 Yamaha guitar through a $60 kit amp and you know what, he still sounded like Joe Satriani!

Pretty sure the owners of Gibson (KKR & co I'm told, a global investment corporate) will be milking the legend of Gibson in the only way they know how - litigation. To expect them to understand Gibson in historical or musician terms is going to be a big stretch, especially given it's previous mismanagement.

The quality and the price is outrageous. There are so many better boutique builders that have amazing attention to detail and give you a better quality guitar for half the price. If they are going to go after dean guitars than they should go after 99% of all the other builders since they all look the same. It's a joke, instead of worrying about taping the head stock and suing everyone, increase your quality and reduce your prices to reclaim all the players whom have left you.

I just noticed a sign on the side of one of our (Seattle) commuter buses today that said "Be Authentic!" I've never noticed it before. I think that's a sign the world is coming to an end...
My take on the Gibson thing is they are totally in the wrong. Too many people are excusing them because of the copyright aspect. They should be worried about counterfeiting but no one outside of China is doing that.
You can't copyright a guitar shape. A guitar is functionally simple...a piece of wood, tuners, pickups, bridge, electronics, etc. If you don't want to make Gibson the sole guitar maker then you have to let anyone make whatever they want as long as they don't call it a Gibson.
There were many design elements of the Les Paul before Gibson and there were many design elements used by Fender before their designs as well.
By the Gibson logic, there should be no automobile manufacturers after Ford if Ford patented round tires, chassis without a horse, etc.

    Peace

O.W. Appleton showed his single cut solid body guitar to gibson 7 years before the les paul, they told him it wouldn’t bear any weight and nobody would buy it

Gibson bought the right from les paul which was going to epiphone at the time for the log, "the log" if you must know is the guitar that mostly resembled a true les paul design

Everyone is overreacting to this video. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with what Gibson and Mark Agnesi said in the video. They’re trying to bounce back from prior management destroying one of the quintessential American guitar brands, and unscrupulous people pirating their intellectual property isn’t good for any of us. I expected better from y’all.

    • @guitarjonathan
      @guitarjonathan Před 5 lety +2

I actually agree that there's really nothing wrong with WHAT they said, it's just HOW they said it and, of course, I definitely don't like the idea of anyone pirating intellectual property. I think the point we, or at least I, was trying to make was that a statement like that doesn't really help them bounce back, which we all want to see. Like one of the other comments, it could've been a much more positive statement instead of a "you've been warned statement." Anyways, thanks for watching and for leaving a thoughtful comment that brings up a different way to see it.

Welcome to the internet where sanity is in short supply and outrage is the drug of choice. From a marketing perspective it was a complete blunder but I wonder how the pitchfork wielding mob would feel about someone borrowing their design to profit off of? Im not talking about just Gibson and I understand there is some controversy as to the origin of their projects design. Should we just toss out all patent, copyright, and trademark law and allow me or you to start producing anything we want to the detriment of say the artist who created the painting?

There is something wrong. Dean has been making those guitars for 40 some years. And decides to go after them now. WtF. And the hypocrisy of making that dumb Hendrix strat. AGNESI going off the rails giddy over a 70s Ibanez Flying V on guitar of the day. The fact that several CZcams influencer trolls that make a career on talking trash are leaving this alone because they are buddies with Agnesi. The fact that they took the video down and haven’t commented. Fender has allowed the strat and Tele to be copied. Guess what the strat is still the biggest selling guitar. Gibson could let people copy designs and be like “. Look ours is the real deal. They don’t do that because the copies are better and much cheaper. I was a fan of Agnesi I also had hopes. Now I hope they go down.

Just over a year ago I bought a new Gibson Les Paul Faded model from Sam Ash at an "Off The Wall" sale for $620. Sure it was a little over a year old model that had not sold, but it was new with all the goodies and a gig bag. I got a new 100% real USA Les Paul for a great price! If they could sell this model for $800, Specials for $700 and Juniors for $600, Gibson would own the guitar market. That would help with brand loyalty and then the next guitar could be a Custom or Standard. Fender has done this succesfully with Squire, MIM, USA & Custom Shop for years. Invest in CNC machines and start cranking out USA made guitars!!!!

In my opinion Gibson USA has not improved their quality
They are certainly not Memphis or the custom shop
I own two custom shop Gibson's at 4 Memphis semi-hollow bodies all are great guitars
The Gibson USA Les Paul's are not worth a damn

ESP and PRS single cuts are so much better than Gibson’s les Paul. Les paul NEVER stays in tune longer than 5 minutes. ESP AND PRS DOES. ESP and PRS haVE stellar playability over Gibson. ALL sound great but PRS has the slight edge. Just get a PRS or ESP SINGLE-CUT. You can’t go wrong.

Gibson was shown a solid body single cut electric guitar very similar to the Les Paul in 1942 by O.W. Appleton APP Guitar and mandolins in the 19th century were using the open book head stock. Gibson is not the pure at heart guitar company. I even saw a triple neck ukulele style setup with a V head stock in the centre. Gibson may come out of this with a nice shiner.
