i am not sure he was intent on integrating as much as he loved talent and had a good heart. He was told not to act to forward so he wouldn't seem to be black. you can see in the video how he goes fun and then tries to restrain himself. He was one good egg!
@Ander Ander You got that right ❣Dean Martin said in an enterview, that he really looked up to the Mills Brothers. My Dad was a singer & got really good seats to see them when I was only about 8 years old! I never forgot how wonderful they were.
Dean Martin apparently did his weekly NBC variety show with very little rehearsal. Whatever the reason, it always looked amazingly fresh and unrehearsed, with a very natural feel and flow. Very few performers could ever pull that off. Dean Martin was that good.
My dad absolutely loved the Mills Brothers and so do I. As I read over the description of the video I realized Daddy never got to see this performance, he died the night before it aired. As fate would have it he died in Jefferson County,Ohio, 15 miles south of Dean Martins home town of Steubenville, It has been nearly 57 years and “I still miss you Daddy,” Love, Butch💔
I was born in 1949 and my parents would listen to this type of music...I'm a Led Zeppelin kind of guy BUT can certainly appreciate this wonderful talent!..
I love vintage variety shows of the 60's and early 70's: the men in their clean black and white tuxedos and women in their evening gowns. You felt like they were dressing up for you. Class. ☺️
................They were dressing up for us. They were truly pros in their field. Looking nice and clean was all part of it. What a difference in today's so called performers..........................
When men were so nice to look at. It happens less frequently these days, so I'm glad we can come to CZcams and see some fine talent performed by some fine men.
I grew up listening to Mills Brothers records that my Grandma played on her old record player....great talent and great harmony. Dino was the coolest of the cool!
My dad use to sing this song alot. He was a fisherman & when the season was over he sang at a nightclub in Juneau. There'd be signs all over saying he would be in town to sing. Night club would be packed out.
My Mom introduced me to The Mills Brothers when I was young. Sixty-Five now, and their voices still put a smile on my face. Add Dino to the mix and you truly have entertainment at its finest.
Sure miss Dean Martin. Incredibly successful and rich from his singing and acting career. But his singing was so effortless and so great all at the same time.
The Mills Brothers was my grand papa’s favorite group. I was listening to them from my babyhood. Dean Martin said the same of them and he said he was infatuated with their phrasing and that he modeled his style after them. Just fun to watch.
Can you believe this was recorded in the late sixties? First class talent, choreography, lighting, sound, direction, make-up, wardrobe, real musicians.... it is about everything here. Never to be seen or heard like this again.
Corey Ferguson I was born in 1960 to parents who loved all things music - when they weren’t out dancing - shows like this were on our little b/w tv - the only reason I knew anything about “hippies” was cause of my babysitters 🤣😂

@@susanschreiber5649 That is how Marty Robbins did it when he hosted his show. He always let his guests be the focal point. He even toned down his own singing as to not upstage his guest. This can be seen when sang with Carol Channing.
I can't watch performances like this from yesteryear without feeling like the world has just gotten so bad we'll never hear wonderful and wholesome entertainment like this ever again.
I always liked the Mills brothers, and Dean Martin has been my fave singer since I was age 12, during 1973. I always watched his variety show, during my childhood and teen years.
love and miss Dean Martin . so lucky to be able to hear or watch the Mills brothers and Dean Martin over and over. we are blessed , like they never left us.
It must’ve been incredible to see them all live back then but thankfully in today’s world when can listen to music like this whenever we want and wherever we want for free
Great performance! Dean Martin was one of the best singers and performers ever and add the Mills Brothers to the mix and you have a winning combination! All of them had a blast and anyone watching had a blast as well! 😊🎼🎸👍

Effortless brilliance - perfect harmonies, joy in the singing, rhythmic movements. Dean got that hand clapping from Harry Mills. So much of his style evident in how Mills gracefully handles a song. Why can't we see anything close to this today?
I'm 57 now, always thought Dean Martin was the best singer, entertainer ever lived, never heard of the Mills Bros till I caught this clip, what an amazing group ,put with Dean and the chemistry is unbelievable, can't stop watching such a feel-good song, anyone who got to see Dean or the Mills Bros live must have memories to cherish for ever
I am 62 my late husband would be 69 he had never heard of these guys until once in the mid 80’s my dad was playing old records some 78’s & most were Mills Brothers. Some Dean Martin & some Frank Sinatra & Billie Holliday record’s played that night too. My husband was converted to the Mills Brothers that night. I’d been hearing them my whole life. My mom was named Margie he’d Change ‘Mary’ in the song 🎶Cab Driver🎶 to ‘Margie’, serenaded her with & without the record playing. I saw a British guitar teacher do a lesson using “Paper Doll” tonight & I got nostalgic for the other songs I grew up with. So glad this is posted. Mom died last year, daddy’s been gone dine 1992. Memories & great music last forever!
No entertainment like this today!! Not only great entertainers but they dressed the part... I can't say I like the dress of so many today that are onstage looking more like me!! lol I like the elegant look.. 😍

Couldn’t have said it better! Those were the days.
My grandfather loved the Mills brothers in the 1930's, loved Dean in the 60's and love them all today in 24.
I can see why Dean idolized these guys and patterned his cool, casual style after them.
If this doesn't put a smile on your face.........you got a serious problem!
Better than the yelling, screaming, foul language & rap "music" that's on the "talent" shows & tv nowadays.!
All the Melodies based on LOVE !!
Quite frankly, I call that horrible Rap stuff, Rap Crap!!!
@chirelle.alanalooney8609 why can't both be valid? I like this type of music, I like blues, rock, metal, rap, pop...
When I was little they were my favorite. Sure wish a group like them was around now.
This was class! Today's people could learn alot from these gentlemen!
IF MY FIRST COMMENT...AT 83 I STILL BLOWN AWAY BY PERFORMERS I CAME TO LOVE!!! GREAT CAMARADERIE & FELLOWSHIP!!!

You got to love Dean; he was really intent on integrating TV back in the 60s - showed a lot of love and respect to black performers ....

God, I love these guys! Dean once said that he modeled his cool show business style directly after Harry Mills.
It's true! People were calling him "The Poor Man's Crosby!" He then replied "Harry Mills is my Idol."
I read an interview some years back where Martin was asked who influenced his style the most?
He replied without hesitation, "The Mills Brothers"
This is how it's done, son.
Right on, pally! By the way, I gave you a GREAT, BIG, HUMONGOUS "thumb's up" for what you said in your comment!!!
You can see the love and respect Dean had for The Mills Brothers. He has said more than once they inspired him to sing that way. Cool!
