Met Ali at the very first Wrestlemania. He was leaving Madison Square Garden, in his limo and the vehicle stopped for traffic.
Not being sure who was inside me and my sisters walked up to the limo, the window came down, and there was Ali and a few others. I yelled "CHAMP!" and he smiled. I was wearing my Giants football hat, handed it to him with my sharpie and he signed the bill "Ali"
I screamed THANK YOU and he said "be careful going home kids"
Still have the hat. Will be buried with it.

Years ago in Las Vegas my father produced a movie called champions forever about the five heavyweight champions of the world, my father couldn't make the meeting on time and asked me to go in his place, I already lived in Las Vegas so I met all the five heavyweight champions at Jonny tacos gym in Vegas, I spent a week with all of them, my children were much younger and got to meet all of them, Ali was there but quiet, the most memorable moments were spent with Joe Frazier

This is a true story: Muhammad Ali was on a flight in the United States. As the plane was taxiing to the end of the runway, the Flight Attendant reminded him to fasten his seat belt. "Superman doesn't need a seat belt," replied Ali. "Superman doesn't need a plane either", replied the Flight Attendant. The world heavyweight boxing champion duly strapped himself in. Being Jewish myself I've been exposed many times to prejudice, but never could figure out why others resort to it. Billy Crystal's words spoke volumes on how we all should act towards one another. Muhammed Ali's greatness is not only being the best boxer of all time, but someone who was stripped of his heavyweight title and then became one of the most revered humanitarians ever.

Dennis Robertson Muhammad Ali is the Greatest. He was the ONLY Heavyweight Champion of the World! That meant he was known and recognized on the streets of every capital and major city on earth not just the USA and Europe.
No other person comes close except the Queen of England, Princess Diana....
But the word fighter if left to boxing would be too small. The fight he fought gave courage to punks like Donald Trump to be able to resist going to Vietnam.
He was willing to pay a fine and go to prison for his beliefs. Give up fame and fortune.
He did not depend on a deferment like punkass Donald Trump or Dick Cheney. He did not run off to Mexico like John Wayne did to avoid WW2.
Vietnam was an unjust war based on lies and racism. There are entire high school classes of boys drafted and dead. There are homeless shelters full of Vietnam era vets. I know firsthand because I was in one of them.
Ali stood up and sacrificed himself and this was important to eventually bring an end to what essentially was another opportunity for the USA to mass murder Asians defending their country.
What you wrote about Trump is worthless nonsense. Shows what a threat the USA has become for having so many ignorant people having too much power.
The only people who will call Trump the greatest will be clueless Users who voted for him. There will be no such sentiment coming from South America, Africa, Asia and yes Europe..especially Britain.
Heavyweight champion because he fought for the little people and spoke truth to power against men too afraid to go against him one on one.

BloodofPatriots Agreed, but as I said before, it's not always the stats that make a person the Greatest. Why Ali was given that honorific, I'll never completely understand.

The best way to remember somebody's/someone's life is to Celebrate the life they led instead of mourning their death. Awesome Billy. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the champ with us.

In 1976 I had the honor of meeting the champ. I was fresh out of the Police Academy and working for a local Dept when they were asking various Dept in the area if they had any officers that would like to work Security at his place in Berrien Springs Michigan and I volunteered. I was in my second day working the main entrance and just finishing up checking in a vehicle when I heard the driver "Hey Champ" I turned around and standing tall was Ali. He greeted me and shook my hand and for the next half and hour or so he stayed and we talked. As we talked he ask me if I had any thing to eat. I told him that I had brought a sandwich but that wasn't good enough. He told one of his body guards to stay at the entrance and had me walk with him to his house for a much better meal. He talked to me like we've known each other for a long time. That memory has stayed with me to this day and he is still the greatest. May you Rest in Peace Champ.

      Shame.

@four eleven forty-four Well, this comment confirms what I thought to be the case when I read a couple of your other "gems": YOU are a miserable, sad human being. I'd call you other things, but you'd enjoy the attention too much. Worst of all, YOU know who YOU are and YOU have to live with YOURself. Have a miserable day.

My father died in my arms on 7/4/84. At the age of 32 I had his body taken 2 1/2 hours away to his favorite church. I gave the eulogy in front of 500. people. It was the easiest thing I ever did. I just told them how proud I was of my father. Jordan Pride. RIP FAJ

MbseedM , I’ve had folk laughing and even clapped at my best friends send off, even my brother in laws I had them laughing, you can’t make it too sombre, it’s a sad day as it is, hopefully, you won’t have to ever speak a eulogy ever, but if you offer, make it fun, as everyone knows a time when that person had fun with everyone at sometime who attends, that would spark a great memory for someone
