Great to see the difference in paper. Cheaper paper gives cheaper results. Thx Shirley.

As a beginner your lesson is really appreciated. Here I sit at home in California, U.S. and watch you paint in Australia. What a marvelous wonderful thing at 79 years of age your lessons bring me a lot of joy.

I wish Arches was $20 here in Australia. Cotton papers are at least $40 for A4 if not more. We pay so much more for any watercolour supplies. Thank you for this easier watercolour tutorial. It's really appreciated. I will be trying this over the weekend.

@@shirleypeters I've managed to pick up some 20cm x 20cm today. 6 sheets for $9 from our cheap cheap store. It says it's cold pressed 100% cotton 440gsm made in India. It looks a bit rough but at that price I don't mind paying for it. My fund for decent colours now needs to grow a bit then I will put in an order to Jackson's. I can't wait for that but in the meantime will continue to use my mix of Reeves and Mont Matte colours.

Hello again Shirley. I wanted to ask you since I find this so helpful because it is a short lesson and takes up a small amount of space so you can pause and go slow or choose to go along with you. I chose to go along and it happened to be my first ever of an actual painting from start to finish. Before this it was just mixing colors and watching videos and reading.
Anyway, it is my birthday today so it was intentional that I did my first painting as a rebirth as my new artist self. At least I hope so. My request is that you actually do do a winter or Christmasy themed card because I would love to send them to a few select people as like you said a kind of girl or piece of myself. You can’t buy that kind of thing.
Once again thank you for being here and for being approachable.
    Cheers,
    Kevin

what weight is the Canson paper?

Have you tried the Princeton Heritage 4050 Series? I'm not sure about the availability to Australia but Jackson's Art in London might be a place to look for an option with good prices too. www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/

Thanks so much for your reply and advice. I am just starting out and was excited to get the brushes so it was terribly disappointing when they didn’t act as I was hoping.
I live in Brooklyn NY in the US and I did take a look at Escobar, but between the difference in currency and shipping plus not many choices I think I’ll pass but thanks again for getting back to me 😀
I really do love how your brushes act though. You mentioned Joseph somebody but I didn’t get the last name. Is he a special brush maker? Lastly, it seems that calligraphy brushes seem very similar to the ones used for watercolor. Have you used them before? If so, what did you think?
Cheers and keep up the great work!
      ps. Love the accent 😉

Low and behold they had the 4050 series and I picked up a few and I’m so glad I did because compared to the others it’s night and day! I just wanted to thank you for your recommendation 😉

Using 140 lb. weight cotton watercolor paper by Strathmore and never had this problem before, but paper is pilling and pieces coming off while painting. Could it be the paints, or the water, or can paper get too old, I don't know what to do with it. Any ideas? Thank you for any help you can suggest.

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  Před 4 lety

Even good quality paper can pill. It could be the age. Not the water or paints, I don't think. You might need to practice using less strokes to get the colour onto the paper: maybe try a 'richer' brew to start with, and just sweep it across the paper with out a second touch.

You do use a different shade of blue in the sky vs the water, but I was a lways learning that the water should reflect the sky?

    • @shirleypeters

Thank you so much, this is where I am at with watercolours, I first used Saunders Waterford, it ended up like an acrylic pour and I was thinking oh dear, I will never get the hang of this. That was 5 years ago. Hand on heart, I am grateful for your lessons. Btw how does Saunders W compare to Arches ? Do you like it, it was on special for $2.50 a sheet. Affordable for me, but, not if this affected my confidence. Best regards Aubs 🙂
