  • I love this scene, as it has a simple structure, simple colour choices, and a large area of harbour to make doing a “wash” possible. I hope you enjoy watching me paint it.
Location for this photograph, which I think is a fantastic spot for Plein Air painting.
Larkin Street Lookout, Waverton NSWnext to Balls Head Reserve Bay, north of Sydney.
REFERENCE PHOTO: You can view, and download the photo from my website, print it out, and use it as a guide if you'd like to paint along.
    Website: www.shirleypete...
    MY MATERIALS:
Paper: Arches Cold Pressed (artist quality.) 31 x 41cm Pad (not loose)
If this is beyond your budget, Canson make a cheaper paper. You won’t get such an even coating of wash, but it’s good to practice on.
Paint: Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolours: very important to use rich colours. The cheaper “studio” or “students” quality are not as easy to mix dark shades. If you use these, the painting might look pale when it dries. Don’t blame yourself, blame the materials!!
Brushes used in this video: Watercolour Mops, Really Fat Chinese Brush, Chisel Flat.
I don’t have a favourite brand, as I buy brushes from many sources. My latest, favourite, mop brushes (fat, round with a point) are from this website:
    www.borntosketch.com
That said, I have just ordered an expensive pair of large brushes from Escoda in Spain. I’ll do a materials video soon, and show you what they are like.
BASIC COLOURS that I recommend for starting out are below. But feel free to choose any colours you like! There are no rules, and lots of beautiful shades to choose from! (The names I have used are mainly the Daniel Smith names. Different brands use different names, sometimes!)
Two yellows, two reds, one purple, two blues, one green, two browns, one black.
When I say “two” I mean a cool and warm version of each colour: Imagine a Lemon and an orange.
    Lemon yellow (cool)
    Permanent Orange (warm)
    Alizarin Crimson (cool)
    Perylene Red (warm)
    Carbozole Purple (mid)
    French Ultramarine (cool)
    Cerulean Blue (warmish)
    Sap Green (mid)
    Burnt Sienna (warm)
    Burnt Umber (cool)
    Black
I buy the 15ml tubes and squeeze the paint into pans. Here is a video of me doing just that:

I love you loose style of painting and your ability to make complicated photo into a manageable painting. Leaving the viewer to fill in the detail. Your work reminds me of Grahan Booths work which I greatly admire. I live in Ireland and it was a long time since I was in Sydney but it brings back many happy memories. Keep up the videos they are an inspiration.

Thank you! Very kind words. I’ll google G Booth. I think I know of him but I’ll check.

Shirley, it's great to hear an Australian accent among the watercolour youtubers! Also, your little studio assistant sneaking back into the studio right at the end made me laugh... !

Yes! She’s a problem at times!! Barking for no reason, which I gave to edit out as it’s so loud.

Loved the video Shirley. Thanks so much for sharing your techniques. I learnt a lot and will be trying the brush strokes. Look forward to more videos. To me painting buildings seem so hard and intimidating☺ but you made it look doable so i will try your method. Thanks once again.

I was watching this on my tv, and my attention was grabbed by the reference photo, which to my eye contained a sci-fi looking preying mantis hovering over the harbour. Backing up and pausing are less convenient on the tv, so I searched up the video on my phone. Of course by the time I got here, it occurred to me that those were probably just value study marks, and Sydney is not in fact infested with giant flying lepidopteras.
Your painting is beautiful, and you executed it elegantly. I loved the way you thinned out the initial wash as you came to the watery foreground.

That’s so funny!! Yes I’d used the photo previously for a demo, and I had totally overlooked those marks.

It’s great to see your channel, and you keep the channel active and do it well on time. After reading a few episodes of your video, your studio is great and your watercolors are very good. I am also painting watercolors, but I am doing it outdoors, you can see it on the CZcams video. I am happy to see you painting Sydney. Is this the city you live in? I am in Melbourne. I will pay attention to you. I wish you a happy painting! Greetings from a Melbourne travel artist.

Love you videos the only thing I found bad was the voice was too low. If you can have that fixed your show would be perfect. Thank you, you have a pleasant speaking way and voice is sweet. Wonderful instruction, good artist.

Thank you. And yes, I need to get a “lav” microphone. This should improve voice but reduce incidental noise. My latest vid is better I think.

I am learning so much from your videos, Shirley! Amazing! What flat brush brand are you using? I have several, but none seems to work for me, some are too long, some are too short, too springy, not springy enough. Your seems to work perfectly.

Hi Shirley, Thank you for showing us such detail of how to paint in watercolor, I am recently new to watercolor medium and this is very helpful. Can you tell me what kind of paper and how is it mounted?

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  Před 4 lety

LF Art Thankyou for watching. The paper is listed below the video. You need to click on the ‘show more’ or the tiny arrow on the right, depending on what you are watching it on.
That said, I’m using an Arches Watercolour Pad. Cold pressed. Being a pad means that I don’t have to tape down the paper.
