    • @djhiffwe1413
      @djhiffwe1413 Před 3 lety +158

      The root and the 5th should almost always sound "good." There's also the "supertonic," which is the 2nd scale degree. That also tends to go with anything, so I'd recommend at least trying it.

    As a music teacher, It's actually quite charming to watch someone with no conventional understanding of music theory approach composition with their own methodology; and I'm glad that tools like FL piano roll exist to facilitate precisely this.
    There's too much snobbery in the comments. If you want to facepalm, that's fine - but keep it to yourself.

      @kungfucolin agreed completely. we put our hands on our instruments, and then we learned to make sound, and then, we learned how to make them sound good. These are things an instructor can never teach -- that is how one develops ones own sound and learns to make their instrument speak from their heart when lecture and practice hall time is done and the concert hall lights and curtains have been raised. Even then with formal training, there comes a point where we are taking the notes from the page, and making them speak from us. Theory can never teach this.
      One who learns to do it from the start is far more gifted then those with years of school and nothing to show for it.
      Theory is only a guide. Bookworms are useless with no work experience. Adaptability and development of methodology are personal skills one of THOSE theorists will never learn without putting their hands on their fret , fingerboards, strings, pads, bows, sticks, or keys. To them I say, pretending to play will get you no where. What is being done here is art, and being shared with us as he walks that path of learning, and its beautiful.

    Part of the untold magic is when making chords outta a scale, you have to use the same chord quality (Maj/min/dim/augm) as in the scale. In the chosen scale, A is minor, G and F are major. You may do the opposite : lay down a couple of chords and then look for matching scales you can use, either using a plugin or a website

    Good stuff my man. I play many instruments, I'm untrained and do not know the text book on music theory, I just know what my ears have told me for 36 years. I create music on my truck steering wheel, with my guitar, in random buckets laying in my shop while im working on a woodworking project, on fruity loops, in my head, on my midi keyboard, beat boxing with my son. My Dad use to tell me he only likes music played on real instruments. I just want to make music. If I like the way it sounds its music to me. The structure, key, all the technical stuff is important in a way but there is a difference in "Playing Music" and "Creating Music" I got bored of playing cover songs when I was 14 years old. Your ears should be your ultimate guidance. Music is music use whatever tool you have and do not conform to any logic or system. Good music typically is generated through random chaos and the moment must be captured or it could be lost forever.

      I’m 20 always loved producing never was into it heavy made some stuff back then shitty lol but 3 months ago I had no musical gear and no knowledge of the piano. Now I have produced a couple tracks and even one for a rapper (I use that term lightly nowadays smh) all I gotta say it drive and determination. Also I fucking love the piano I am currently learning Ahmad Jamal’s Lament.

    You can left shift and drag the selected note (or notes), it'll duplicate it, it's better than copy and paste
    or you can simply Ctrl + B

      I just hope people are not paying money. Because that is highways robbery. How you gonna teach music without an instrument. It’s all about using software. M. To that end, I STILL don’t know what this “Music Theory” is (and I have been making music since 1974.
      I know what music is, but unsure of this theory. Is it just a fancy way of saying using a software, or….?
      I’m sure the guy is a nice guy and all but he needs to stop all this “secrets of Bass real EDM artists don’t want you to know” and “Never start an EastSide Underground DubHop beat without this plugin” blah blah. It’s ART. Since when is there a right way and a wrong way?
      It’s what people like. I dunno. I wish there was more progressiveness and less theorizing.

      @@YourFreeBeats you've been making music for 50 years and never heard of "Music theory"?
      Theory has nothing to do with using software, using software is more just an issue of "taste", or easiness.
      I'm not really talented at real instruments, I'm trying to get better, but it takes real practice and talent, while in software you can just tell the computer to play the notes.
      but no, Theory is about what notes sound nice, in whatever medium it may be, digital, electric or acosutic.
      it's about key signatures, and chord progressions, and rhythm
      oh, and also, you're over 50 and and your username is "Check-a-Bitch Beats"? dope

      @urphakeandgey6308 Před 3 lety +24

      @@YourFreeBeats There is a difference between the clickbait you're complaining about and music theory. You trying to talk about music theory is actually laughably stupid. You're one of those idiots that think it's a bunch of "rules" and talk down on it because "I don't wanna limit My Creativity™." Even though it's obvious you've NEVER studied it.
      In reality, music theory functions more like guidelines. It's music **theory,** not "music law" for a reason. Plus, are you seriously talking about breaking music theory conventions when making EDM??? That's just stupid. VAST majority of EDM rarely explores outside of major/minor and I DOUBT your music has either even though you have big talk.
      So many kids out there talking about how they "don't need music theory," meanwhile all they write is vi - IV - I - V or a rotation of it. If this is you, stfu and learn noob theory.
