Do you know what the fire controller says at 2:20 mark? I can only make out “Feuer” but I’m wondering what he says prior to that.

Excelente documento, gracias

Lots of good film of these smart 'pocket battleships'. Lots of Admiral Graf Spee and good close ups of her sister Admiral Scheer.

(English Version) Captain Hans Wilhelm Langsdorff actually felt that the ship: Admiral Graf Spee, was no longer able to fight and that his vessel, due to serious damage to its hull, its cannons and the oil refining room, the made it impossible to return to combat on the high seas, but he knew that under the circumstances, he would be an easy target for the three English ships, should he try to make war. As a great captain, he saved his crew and out of pride and loyalty to the Nazis and his Fuher, he blew up his own vessel so as not to be humiliated and sunk by the English fleet, which he certainly would. The firing footage of the controller at 2:20 mark, it’s very famous. I’ve always wondered what the controller is saying. He says something….”Feuer!” But can anyone tell me what he says before?

Langsdorff was a class act. Don't think he cared for Hitler at all. If the builders would have put better armour on the Graf Spee they would have destroyed the British at the River Plate. My dad fought in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer in the Atlantic and a PT Boat in the Pacific. But he respected Langsdorff for saving his men and also probably a lot of British sailors because if he came out and fought it would have been epic.

They didn't put 'better armor' on it because she was never intended to be a battleship, "pocket" or otherwise. She was a super-heavy cruiser, with six 11" [280mm] guns instead of eight or nine 8" guns. Weight was around 16,000 tons, but despite the 'treaty limitation' of 10,000 tons for cruisers, no major naval power was building cruisers that went to sea at that displacement. There were some cruisers afloat that still displaced seven to ten thousand tons, but everything built right before the war was 14,000 tons or so.

Well, apparently Langsdorf fell for the disinformation spread by the Brit's that heavy elements of the Royal Navy, including a battleship that was in drydock somewhere, had made it to South American waters while Graf Spee was in Montevideo. I think she was only up against her original foes, Achilles and Ajax, with the aging cruiser Cumberland replacing Exeter, which Graf Spee had put out of action. But with Graf Spee's diesel fuel conditioning damaged she wouldn't have been able to outrun even one of the Royal Navy's old, slow capital ships.
