Using an iOS device connected to the THR yields similar results. If you have a looper app, connect the usb cable to THR, then using the Apple usb connection kit, connect the iOS device. My setup uses the L7 looper app. This feature has made my upgrade from the previous version well worth it. And this method requires no power source. Thanks for the great vid Kevin!
I sure wish I’d seen this or thought of that before I built out a MIDI pedalboard to control Quantiloop from an iPad on my THR30. Would have saved me a lot of time and money! Very cool find!
I’m not quite sure why one would want to use a looper pedal AND a backing track together, but I can report this: The bluetooth connection still works even with this loop pedal setup. Neither is bypassed or disabled. So, yes, it can be done, even with the aux in jack used for the loop pedal. Now I just need to find reason to do that. Thanks for the video.
I used to have fly3 BT stereo pack. Drum track via BT, one guitar direct, another through a small battery powered processor into aux in. Jam with a friend anywhere:-)
I've always found it's much simpler to just hook any THR to a laptop or computer (or tablet for that matter) and use a looper software/app. You can just overlay to new tracks and also tweak them to your heart's desire. In some cases you can bluetooth midi control the looper and you only need a USB connection. Or stick HX stomp or PodGo to its aux in if you really want to use it as its speaker :)
Thanks Kevin, I have the THRii 10... no line out, but still you’ve got me thinking :) I’ve been using a looper on my iPad but the tonal quality suffers.

Anybody have problems after downloading the update on the amp? My line 6 receiver plug doesn't work now?! Was there something i needed to do in settings before or after the download?
Hi, thanks for the tip.i tried this out and the looper sound is extremely low I can barely hear it .I seem to have the correct setup and also checked the thr app setting..I have the rc1 that's the only difference.
Hi there ! Great review. ! Question is it possible to connect your guitar wireless to some effect pedals and these effect pedals then connect (wireless or by cable) to the yamaha 30II wireless speaker ? Or is it better to add the effect pedals after the speaker ? What would be a good solution ?
For an amp with a bona fide FX loop, you generally want some pedals between the guitar and the input to the amp (tuner, wah, overdrive, etc.) and other pedals in the loop (modulation, delay, reverb, etc.) so that they are applied after the amp’s gain stage. So it really depends on what kind of pedals you’re talking about. You could certainly use a wireless transmitter + receiver to go from the guitar into a pedal chain; I specifically bought the full G10S system so that I can use the wireless transmitter with my THR30ii as well as with my other amps and pedalboard setups. As far as going wireless from the end of your pedal chain into the Yamaha, you could probably do that, but you wouldn’t gain much advantage. The point of a wireless system (in my opinion) is so that your movement with the guitar is not restricted by the instrument cable. But the pedals don’t move, so once you hook up a cable from the last pedal into the THR, you don’t need the pedal to follow you around the stage, it can just sit there on the floor ;-).
Wohh this is huge! Thanks for that! My only left concern then is the bad sound when I play in the evening with a headset. I was told by the guitar shop seller it is unfortunately normal because of some pre-amp?
What this would really be great for is using the aux input for the drum/bass output on the Digitech Trio+. That way the drum and bass aren't subject to the guitar EQ and effects, and there's a built in mixer with the guitar and audio output knobs.
Looks like there’s a huge eq difference between the guitar and audio (fed by the line out to aux in ) channels. The guitar channel sounds like it has more mids and like a proper amp, the aux in sounds trebley, harsh and scooped. Any ideas on how to fix this ?
Does the new thr series not send out the actual aux input to the line out? Because otherwise I would expect, that your method would not work. I have an old thr c and x model an love it because of it's amp models. But these ones only have headphone outputs. I can modify it so, that the internal speakers won't get muted when plugging in headphones, but I expect your method won't work for me, if the aux signal is also distributed to the headphone output?
Had a go at this, I get a way more noise coming from my RC3 if I connect this into the aux. I prefer to just use the amp in clean mode when looping and use existing pedals on the pedal board for effects (with the looper at the end of the pedal board).
Yep . . . check some of the prior comments where several others discussed that. After I made the video, I actually got a Y adapter and hooked it up and it works fine.
@@KevinIlsen I want to purchase the Exact Cable that you are using for this method. Do you happen to know the name of this cable ? (standard instrument, TRS ect . . .) Appreciate any input. Enjoyed your informative demo my friend.
@@michael_caz_nyc The cable that I bought is a Hosa YMP-434. It says the following on the package: “Breakout 3.5mm TRSF to Dual 1/4 in TS.” So it has a pair of male 1/4” TS plugs on one side that I plug into the stereo outputs of my looper pedal, and a 3.5mm female TRS jack on the other side. Then I just use a 3.5mm male to male cable from there to the Aux Input of the THR amp.
@@KevinIlsen Thanks man. I did a little more research and some people are saying that this method may Damage the Amp? ( I am not that knowledgable ) but I wish that Yamaha would offer some input? What about just going from the 1/4 inch output of the Looper to the 1/8 inch input of the Aux?
@@michael_caz_nyc I’m not knowledgeable enough to know whether it can damage the amp either. I saw several suggestions online about how to use a looper this way and so I tried it and decided to make the video. Regarding just running a cable from one 1/4 inch output of the looper to the 1/8 inch input of the amp you could certainly do that but then you’d only be getting one channel. Honestly that’s probably fine, though. For example, I often take my THR out to open mics and I run a 1/4” instrument cable from one line out jack on the back of the amp, to the mixing board at the venue. Works great and I can still hear through the amp on stage with me.
I have a Digitech Trio+ and run into the amp input and a secondary battery powered PA amp for the drums and bass. That way the drums and bass are not colored but the amp tones.
Thanks for the tip Kevin. But before I plug my THR30, and because I saw a lot of warnings about configuring that kind of connection, has anyone tried with the new Boss RC-5 looper... ? Thanks for your answers !
It’s called “Europa (Earth’s Cry, Heaven’s Smile)” by Santana. Here’s a video where I play guitar over a backing track of the entire song: czcams.com/video/OvPUOt_BCUA/video.html
Thank you for the video! I'm completely new to modeling amps, effect-pedals and all the cable stuff. Does somebody know if I need mono or stereo plugs?
The Aux jack on the THR30ii would need a stereo plug. So if there are separate L and R outputs from your looper pedal, each of them would be mono, so you'd need a Y adapter to join them together.
I have a question can the same connection could be done with a reverb , delay or modulation pedal ? And could you run an overdrive through the front in ? I have a pedal board that has about 8 various drive pedals an effects ... this has been the only reason I I have held off purchasing. Thanks great video and content 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🎸
Yes and yes. You can run any pedals into the front. Likewise, anything that you'd traditionally put in an FX Loop (using the "4 cable method") could be hooked up the way that I illustrated hooking up the looper. Just be aware, as some have noted in other comments here, that you're going to be using a tiny jack and at least some length of tiny cable, and so you're going to experience some signal loss (vs. using 1/4" cables throughout). So I'd say: do it for practicing at home, but in a performance setting, you might not be 100% happy.
So basically it is possible to use the 4 cable method with this work around? I would love to use a line6 hx effects with the thr30ii, but I've always given up on that idea since the yamaha has no fx loop. Is there any loss in tone using the aux instead? Thanks a lot and cheers from Germany Kevin.
Yes, you can use the 4 cable method and effectively stack other effects before (or instead of) the looper. I would imagine that there is signal degradation when using the aux jack, simply because it's a smaller jack -- you won't get the quality that you get with a 1/4" cable.
If you want to have true stereo sound you might need two 1/4"-1/4" (mono) cables between the THR and the looper. THR line out Left -> Looper Input A; THR line out Right -> Looper Input B. Using Only one cable results in mono loop tracks (i.e. I the same sound on left and right channels). Is this assumption correct? Thanks
Yes, to retain the true stereo, run a pair of 1/4" mono cables from the L and R outputs of the THR into the L and R inputs of the looper, then use a "Y" adapter to connect a pair of 1/4" mono cables to the L and R outputs of the looper, and combine them into a 1/8" stereo cable to plug into the AUX input of the THR.
@@KevinIlsen No dice on my end, RC5 with two mono cables going in the back and two mono cables with a Y at one end that goes into the AUX. ‘Guitar’ button turned to 0 on both amp and app yet a high pitched unbearable sound form both guitar and drums.
I have headphones connected to the THR. I tried this and I only got sound out of one side, which is the same side that the LINE OUT from the amp is connected. How can I get sound from both sides? Thanks in advance!
You’d need to run two 1/4” cables from the left and right line outs into your looper pedal. If your looper pedal is stereo, then take the two outputs from the looper and combine them using a Y cable connector to run into the AUX input. If your looper pedal is mono, you’ll need to use the Y connector to combine the L and R outputs into a single cable into your looper pedal.
wow. i think i am going to upgrade my THR10X now.... this is actually cheaper than my THR10X online too. I was thinking about trying to add a looper to my THR10X over the looper omission. It isn't looping back in before the reverb, but good enough....
Make sure to go into the THR app and set the guitar output volume to 0. If you don't do this you'll get a lot of noise. It's not enough to adjust the physical knobs on the THR; you need to do it in the app.
@@KevinIlsen Thanks for the quick response. When I listen through headphones using the looper hookup method in your video, I am getting stereo...I was afraid that I would only get a signal from the side that I had hooked the audio out to. So...K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Snoopy!
Doesn't the THR also send the AUX input signal through the Output? So if you do an Overdub on the Looper it would record the first loop again. Or am I thinking wrong? Best regards!
I just did some tests, and you are 100% correct. So although this technique will work for laying down a single loop and then playing over it with different amp settings, it is not going to work if you want to do overdubs on the looper. For overdubs to work properly, you'd need a true FX Send/Return capability prior to the output.
@@KevinIlsen Hey Kevin, thanks for checking. It would be so great if there was an option in the app to unlink the aux in from the output. I thought about sending the guitar via output to a multitrack recorder and use the aux in as Monitor for the live mix. That doesn't work ether. I use a looper in front of the amp. That works great, too. Just not so many sound options :)
Near as I can tell, no. The L and R outputs on the back are line level outputs. You could run them into a PA or perhaps a powered speaker, but not into a standard speaker cabinet.

I’m not sure; I suppose you could try
@@KevinIlsen Thanks for the quick response. When I listen through headphones using the looper hookup method in your video, I am getting stereo...I was afraid that I would only get a signal from the side that I had hooked the audio out to. So...K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Snoopy!
Will this not have any issues with amp circuits? Like overheats or anything that cpuld damage the amp.
Klazzik77 can’t imagine why it would.
@@KevinIlsen sorry, I am not a techy guy but I would love to do this once I got my THR.😊
That's freakin rad
GREAT video
Thank you!
Awesome video tune your guitar man!
Awesome, thank you!
Hi..Can you use the THR with a Cabinet ? Like 1x12 ?
Near as I can tell, no. The L and R outputs on the back are line level outputs. You could run them into a PA or perhaps a powered speaker, but not into a standard speaker cabinet.
