Hi Karen, first congratulations on the Colorista Facebook event it's great that they are counting on you as you are an amazing artist. 🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏
On the other hand I love that you teach us how to use other colored pencils. I am a pencil collector I have many brands and I only use prismacolor which are my favorites. I agree with you in what you comment, the grayscale sheets, coloring them and covering them with life is a beautiful and time consuming work, but you have to choose very well the tones to give them life, the linear illustrations are beautiful too, it is another way of coloring. Since I discovered this kind of sheets, like yours I am more encouraged to color.
✏️As an idea, if you want, you can have a sheet next to you, off camera and put the numbers while you use the colored pencil (with the same pencil) and at the end of the video you show it and you don't have to transcribe it or waste time. And if you want then you put it in the information box and you have them sorted. I watch your video with the subtitles automatically in Spanish and as you say the numbers and show them to the camera there is no problem, at least in my case. Thank you Karen for sharing your wonderful art with us. Sorry for my English ☺️

Your English was perfect! Thank you! I’m glad you are able follow along with subtitles. I wasn’t sure if they converted to other languages or not. I do always put the colors and now numbers in the description box. Thank you for your suggestions!!❤️❤️❤️

Hi Karen, I am so glad you spoke up, if the lady was asking for help and all those who are in “the know” discourage….that is so wrong, I personally like the grey scale, cause I can still goof it up but I think that having it helps me see the shadows, sometimes its hard to tell! I love watching your videos they are informative and so helpful, I like you think out loud and your artwork is beautiful! Also Congratulations on your Colorista event I hope it is a smashing success! BTW Lily is beautiful!

Wonderful to see you again Karen!! Unfortunately it’s late at night again of course so I will have to watch the rest tomorrow💙
Hearing you chatting about pencils and the swatching… and your experience with the pencils is so interesting!!
Everyone has there favourites☺️ you mentioned that you always reach for prisma…. Everyone reaches for their favourite and I honestly think that is the best thing to do- use what you enjoy the most and feel most comfortable with & it will be the best work you create for so many reasons…. And it’s most important that you are happy ☺️You shouldn’t feel like you have to use other pencils
as for luminance being your least favourite, I have heard others say they don’t like them. I love mine I think lol. Some colours I hate - the scratchy ones.
Its definitely a trial an error with paper- they really need good quality watercolour paper or great colouring book paper ( Klara Markova perhaps- haven’t tried). They are smooth and creamy on watercolour paper and clairefontain paint (saunders hot pressed I think I liked best so far, and strathmore ( various ones)& arches is ok). No scratchiness yay!! They are awful on the wrong paper ( it’s a fight 🤣). You know all this though ! So much Better than me. And it’s about what you enjoy!
Love the polys too! Their layering ability is amazing & translucency is beautiful. Me saying all this feels ridiculous… I need to really start colouring again instead of playing about and testing ( I still remember things too from when by I was colouring a bit).
I really think you should use what you love the most & don’t feel guilty about neglecting some ( I hope that makes sense!)
Congratulations on doing Faebuary (?) this year!!!! I can’t wait to see your page and know it will be amazing! I seriously can’t wait to see your fairies!
As for the person speaking negatively about grayscale- that is absolutely ridiculous & rude!! It is not cheating! You could put a single colour on it and it would look terrible! I am so glad you spoke up about it!
And most importantly, I hope you & your family health is well or at least improving 💙
So how are the Holbein and lightfast in the pencil ranking? Lol
Thank you so incredibly much again
Ps if some of this is a bit jumbled, it’s because I’m typing on my phone, and I sincerely apologise!

I am using what I love. That’s why I swatched everything out together. I love ALL my pencils!❤️

Hi Karen! Lovely to see you! I hear ya about the Lumi pencils. I've done a couple portraits with those in Anastasia Koldareva books and while I love the colors, they are scratchy and I didn't like them as well as the Prismas or Polys. But yeah, those flesh colors in combination with the prismas work awesome! I started Ravenheart yesterday and working on her dreads now. I'm looking forward to coloring this page (when I can get to it)! LOL! I need to work more on ethnic skin combinations! Thanks again for your wonderful tutorials! I know they're A LOT of work!! I love yours and consider them a "Master Class" for me. I already know the basics, but like following your tutorials for more perfecting and additional color combinations I wouldn't have otherwise thought of. So thank you!! Hope you and your mom/family (and Cooper 🐶) are well!! ☺

@@ArtbyKarenValentine oh, yeah! I saw that you re-swatched all your pencils! That must’ve taken forever! I can’t imagine doing that, lol!😆 but, I definitely see the advantage of having everything grouped by color and do agree that that’s a good idea! I have a lot of pencils I don’t use either, and I have to kind of force myself to use them.
Oh, and gray scale is definitely not cheating! It’s a whole different way of coloring! 👍

Hi!! Cool seeing you!! Congratulations on the Facebook event!! I started this one tonight but paused the video when pale peach starts 🤣 I have Derwent pale peach in Watercolor, I'm going to try using it dry and see if that works. I have Derwent pale peach pastel pencil and while you can color on top of them, they don't really blend real well, they kinda fade out. Giving my brain and eyes a rest for the night and will continue tomorrow. Thank you for all your help!!

Hi Shannon! I was thinking about you just the other day! Thank you! I have thought about it. It’s just not very easy to film. A lot of work goes into the designing of the page before I even start drawing and then it’s just a rough sketch. All the magic happens with the colored pencils and a proportional divider. I am trying to work out how to do just some shaded line art pieces. I got the first one done. But I cannot get it to scan white enough so it prints with a very faint border around it. And I just can’t get the hang of drawing on the iPad. But I’m always trying to learn, so maybe Ill figure it out one day!

Hi Karen. I was so excited to see this page is called Lilly. Not sure if i told you, but Lily is my nickname. I've been called Lily all my life by family and friends. I would even get necklaces and keyrings with the initial L on them. Also lillies are my favorite flowers and were my mums too. I was shocked that some people think greyscale is easy. Betting that these people have'nt coloured a portrait. Colouring skin especially can be incredibly challenging. Glad that you spoke up. I totally agree with you. Lilly is stunningly beautiful and her skin looks amazing. Congrats on the Faebruary event. You will smash it my friend. Love Ya Lily. x🌸🌸🌸
