      They are in some rally, but not WRC. Some rally events in the US hand out packets with the pace notes already written down. Also there are machines that determine the corner angles and such. That info is then translated into more legible notes and then handed out to teams, iirc.

    Do drivers picture the turn in their heads before getting to it or do they just quickly put the car in the mentioned speed and steer?

    • @mouldywotsits1726
      @mouldywotsits1726 Před 7 lety +2

      i think your mistaking stuff, the number (30 for example) tells the driver how far it is till the turn and the the turn number (right 3 for example) tells the driver how difficult the turn is. 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. this allows them to have an idea of whats ahead.

      seems to be opposite on the numbers, the lower number the harder the turn is, take a look at his wheel, the first number from center is 6, and then it counts downwards as you get further out from the center. This is also the way turns are described in games like DiRT Rally forexample

  • @niiphox93
    @niiphox93 Před 3 lety

    First time I heard pace notes was in colin mcrae rally 2.0 and I thought the numbers meant what the suitable gear would be for the corner, let's say a 6 would be gear 6 meaning that the turn would be wide

    • @dmor6696
      @dmor6696 Před 5 lety

      ok i did some studying lol that number means distance, so yeah, in a way i was right, the bigger the number the easier the turn will be, because, for me at least, it gives more time to adjust the car or correct mistakes.
      Although 6 right LONG can also give the same idea, but i still remember that the 6 right 100 and maybe extending to 200 is a easier turn
      Anyways, this video gave me the will to do some more research ;)

    • @charlesloh5175
      @charlesloh5175 Před 8 lety +1

      Firstly it's not allowed, based on the rules.
      Secondly your recce's speed cannot exceed 70kmph. So you can't judge/simulate the g forces and potentiometers because each corner can be taken in a very different manner

    • @Sussex192
      @Sussex192 Před 9 měsíci

      No. The co-driver does so much more then just give directions, (think changing tyres, adding to the notes, working out times, which have to be worked out down to the minute etc.) Also, many stages are in areas with out phone coverage.

    • @Machtyn
      @Machtyn Před 7 lety

      Miles11we because when the pace notes in the game tell me left 6, there's no way for me to put the wheel on 6 without a wheel.
      And, I've noticed Dirt 3 with the game pad that I have is not very organic. That is, I'm tapping the wheel left or right instead of holding the trigger just a little off center. It might be that my trigger is set up in digital feedback instead of analog feedback. I'll have to check that out.

      Howto not they don't use them during the race. They just use the numbers when making the pace notes. That way they don't have to try and guess the consistency of their notes.

    isnt it strange that paperwork dictates a race win?
    they should do rallies without co drivers too

      @TitaniusAnglesmith Před 8 lety +59

      Yeah that's what they did before co drivers. A lot of people died.

      and this, is why hillclimbs have a higher mortality rate.

      Hillclimbs don't have co drivers? Why?

      Because hillclimb events are just one stretch of road, therefore not needing a nav because you would get used to it over a few reccy runs/practice attacks.

      So the might get boring factor trumps the safety factor in this case. Well that's interesting.

    I hate to be "that guy, but all this did was leave me even more confused about pace notes. Why not just have a system where the co-pilot says something like, "Right sharp mid," instead of all of these weird numbers and minuses and whatnot? That and memorizing the tracks and doing solo rallies are so much easier than trying to understand the pace notes. And... Speeding... In a race... Am I missing something here? First, you get penalized for making it from one stage to another too quickly (Not counting traffic violations) and now you get penalized for finishing a race too quickly? I thought the point of a race was to make it from one point to another as fast as possible. These rules and regulations make me NOT want to get into rallying because all I'm hearing is that you get punished for trying.

      @Grumble1980 Před 7 lety +7

      Brock Dumesnil yep, you've missed the point. the speed limits only apply during reconnaissance ("reccy") when they're learning the route "2 day, 2 pass reccy" as they say. the speed limit is so they don't affect the car in front/behind as they reccy. For the stage proper they're flat out. In a rally you often have to drive in public roads between stages as well, so you have to stick to the speed limits.

      Brock Dumesnil they don't use those terms because they're open to interpretation, sharp right mid could mean one thing to one person and something else to another, numbers brings consistency and also allows for interchangeable co drivers and drivers. It's especially important because of all the varying courses/layouts.

    in Dirt 3 and sega rally, im more annoyed at the dude screaming directions at me and it makes me loose concentration so whenever possible i turn it of, i can clearly see the road i dont need some dude telling me where to go.

    • @Tumppe1337
      @Tumppe1337 Před 7 lety +5

      then you drive too slow, for good rally driving pace notes are essential

    • @NJHS92
      @NJHS92 Před 7 lety

      im driving as fast as possible without overshooting a curve, its not possible to drive faster than i do without having time to brake.
      its not essential to have a dude screaming in my face and making me loose concentration, and he even says themn to late and making me crash

      @MrChick86 Před 7 lety +1

      Maybe because you're turning ON the directional map.. Try turning it OFF and drive as fast as you can and tell me how many crashes you've got .. If it's a clean race though, then you've already memorized the stage !
