    Wilma Rudolph was one of the greatest female athletes in history, not USA history, history period. It was surprising that just Johnny Carson knew her. She won the 100 and 220 easily and her anchor leg in the 440 relay was amazing. Take a look at these races if you can. It was great to have Betty White and Johnny Carson on the panel. Classy Kitty as usual. Thanks for the video.

    This was such a treat to watch Wilma Rudolph on this show! I was born in 1959 so I was too young to re remember her from the 1960 Olympics, bit I heard about her while I was growing up and she left quite a positive impression. I guessed which one she was by listening to her speak & her demeanor. Because she grew up in the South during the 1st 50 years of the last century, sadly African Americans had to be very careful looking white people in the eye while speaking as well as having an assertive personality with white people was also a dangerous ordeal.by listening to the other two contestants speak I could tell they were both New Yorkers right away by their assertive and getting straight to the point on their answers.
    Sad how African Americans have been treated in this country. Same with the American Indian.

    Johnny Carson’s barber pick. that joke about #1 getting more laughs than i did - and his whole delivery and deadpan expression was really sooo Carson. But, the hand going up to his face was pure Jack Benny - (even to the deadpan look) - whom he must have admired quite a lot. :) 😋🌷

    What is truly absurd is, 3 out of the 4 people asking the questions were not able to recognize the 1960 Olympic Champion who'd won THREE GOLD MEDALS IN THE ROME OLYMPICS and was the FIRST WOMAN to do so, was trained in, born in, and represented the United States of America. THIS SHOW WAS IN 1960! WILMA RUDOLPH WON HER MEDALS IN.......... 1960!!!

    • @David35687
      @David35687 Před 2 lety +4

      It’s not absurd that they couldn’t recognize her for several reasons:
      A. The resolution on your typical televisions in 1960 was terrible.
      B. In 1960, the TV networks did NOT spend hours and hours covering each and every Olympic event while doing personal profiles on every gold medal winner. Most people would read about these events in the newspaper.
      C. Due to the Rome-US time difference, most Olympic events would have occurred in the morning or afternoon. Most people would be at work and unable to watch.
      D. The daily news at that time consisted of 30 minutes of local news and 30 minutes of national news. 24/7 news was radio only. If there was film of her victory on TV, it probably would’ve been a 30 second story.
      E. Back then track and field was just as obscure as any other amateur sport. Could you recognize or can you even name one American who won a gold medal in wrestling or target shooting from the Tokyo Olympics that just finished?
      Now do you understand why people did not recognize her? I’m surprised no one is claiming that white people back them couldn’t tell black people apart. Or was Johnny Carson the only non-racist there who could tell them apart, which is why he dropped out of the game.
      Finally, I know who Wilma Rudolph is and i know that I’ve seen Olympic documentaries about her struggle and triumph. Yet, I couldn’t remember which face was hers.
      Stop judging people from the past by using the standards of today, it’s just dumb.

    Does anyone know why Carson in the second round disqualified himself for knowing who the real Wilma Rudolph was ? Ms. Rudolph as I think Ms. Carlisle would surmise did not have the muscular legs one would associate with a world class athlete of that type , but appears from the old tape to clearly more muscular in the core and shoulders. In fact I saw a pic of her winning the heat at some event , perhaps the Olympics and the people running behind were more muscular in their legs . She looked graceful and feminine , skinny legs and all .
