California olive ranch led a fight to get California olive oils certified and tested real. Several years back when the New Yorker article shook up the industry revealing that most "Italian" olive oils were either cut, or fake or blended from several countries. Some of this gangster oil even was machine lube grade canola oil and killed a few people in Europe.
So look for dates, California source and certicfication. The California Olive Oil Council (COOC) is currently the only organization in the United States that provides olive oil grade certification, showing a dedication to domestic industry growth and quality standards.

I have been using the California brand (100% California sourced) for a few months now strictly for its health benefits. I take a few small sips every day and I really like it. It does burn the back of your throat a little and tastes peppery as the experts say that real extra virgin olive oil should be like. Last week I ran out and decided to try the Braggs brand because they certainly make the best Apple Cider Vinegar. In my honest opinion I don't get the burn in the back of the throat or even the peppery taste with the Braggs brand. It also seems more oily or greasy than the California brand. The Braggs brand cost me a couple dollars more for the same amount so it was a little more expensive. I feel the California brand has better quality than the Braggs and with that being said I will be going back to the California brand once I run out of the Braggs Extra Virgin olive oil. I will still continue to buy the Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar but not the Olive Oil. Please remember this is just my opinion. Always do your research and try a few different brands and stick with the one(s) you like. Enjoy your olive oil. 😀

ANY olive oil that is imported should be suspect for adulteration. The olive oil mafia in Italy has gotten very good at faking olive oil. Stick with ANY 100% California olive oil that has both a harvest date and a best by date. Bari is a good one, also UC Davis makes it's own. Bragg does not have both dates.. . It also does not have any certification [COOP] as shown on the California oil. These are critical! The California olive oil might not have your favorite taste, but at least you can be sure it is not 50% Canola oil.

Nobody has mentioned the California brand says "MEDIUM" highlighted in light green near the bottom in small print. I understand that the Bragg's brand was sold off maybe 2 or 3 years ago. Anybody know to who? One person I know said a Chinese company. I really don't know but he also said their apple cider vinegar acidic content was half a point lower than the original. If this guy says the true test is the best taste than he should be extolling the taste of the California brand which has distinct flavor and a nice peppery finish. Try a taste out of a metal tablespoon. Put the spoon in your mouth and you should be able to slide the oil off the spoon with your lips with a clean smooth finish look on the spoon. If it leaves an oily or drippy look than it is probably junk.

“First pressed” - means the olives were crushed and pressed once...makes sense right? Olive pressed more than once are considered lower quality, and do not qualify as extra virgin.
“Cold pressed” - means that no added heat is used when pressing the fruit for the oil.
First Cold Pressed is always your better choice for EVOO.
