Prefuse Box Removal and fuse replacement Mercedes Benz C250/W204

  • As some have said, do not rip the yellow pyrofuse out of the box. Pry the orange part up first, and then it will remove easily.
    If you’ve burnt out one of your fuses in your prefuse box the dealership will try to sell you the entire prefuse box which will probably be around $200 to $400 including installations. I’ll show you how to open it and replace the burnt out fuse.
    Mine burnt out because I was installing a subwoofer amp and mislabeled my ground and power wire, and had an inline fuse at 100w which was too much for the 80w fuse I had it hooked up to, and blew the prefuse box fuse instead. I figured out the problem because the entire back / rear of the car was dead due to the rear fuse box receiving no power. The car didn’t start because the fuel pump wasn’t receiving power.
    Before you do this, make sure that you test every possible fuse and connections to make 100% sure that the prefuse box IS the problem because it’d be a huge waste of time to go through all this and for your battery to be bad or something stupid like that.
    If this doesn’t work or you screw up your car worse it’s not my fault. This worked for me.

    When disconnect plug from the pyrofuse you must lift the orange safety portion of the plug, don't use pliers and force !

      I wish I would’ve read this prior to me using pliers...mine will not fit back in. I have ordered a new yellow squib connector at the cost of $70. It’s a simple easy connector to push up and remove. A panel remover tool is the best tool to pry it up and off. Please edit this video. Hard way for people to learn. Everything else was helpful though.

    Interesting video, thanks! For others: This is the pre-fuse box F32 (Vorsicherungsdose). It also contains a relay that, when faulty, can cause all kind of weird fault messages when turning power on in the car. Fault code B214B72 / A14B72 can be a hint for this.

      Yeah, no one had a video for opening this up, and a lot of people on forums wouldn’t touch it because it’s non-serviceable. It’s really just a few fuses and relays, nothing crazy about it, no need to be afraid of it.

    Thanks GINCO ! I was wondering why my C240 had power at the PreFuse box but most of my fuses in the other boxes aren't receiving power. I suspected a high powered starter fuse or Starter relay. I will once again check my fuses then test all my relays then I will check the PreFuse box. Once again thanks, your video was definitely needed for the Mercedes owners.

    I think this is a crappy design by MB. I had the airmatic compressor fail, and it blew a fuse in the prefuse box at the same time. Instead of having a normal fuse in the power supply it just doubled the price of the repair.
    Thank you for the video Ginco. Now i will repair the old box and have as a spare.

    • @ginco_bnz
      @ginco_bnz  Před 3 lety

      I agree, it is a pretty dumb design. The chances of the car having a major fault that would blow one of these without blowing other fuses is very low, and the fact that it’s supposed to be irreplaceable is dumb as well.

    I'm having some issues with a constant 12v after replacing my OEM stereo. It seems that the terminal that is closed to the windshield drops to around 1.5 volts a few minutes after the ignition is switched off and this causes my stereo memory to be erased. Most of the power, including lights, and seats are pretty much gone after this happens. The power resumes after opening the door or unlocking/locking the car though. When the voltage drops/rises, I hear a small pop or click just behind the battery. Seems like some thing is switching off after some time of the ignition going off. I'm not sure if this is normal or if the prefuse is bad. Could anyone check on their car to see if this is normal?

    • @ginco_bnz
      @ginco_bnz  Před 5 lety

      It’s normal. You need to find a proper constant 12v, yours is most likely wired to the cigarette lighter which is only on when the car is on. Find one that is constant or wire directly to the battery.

    Hi. I just checked as you suggested in the video. There is no beep with either terminal. the car runs normally. All systems go. All 3 points show battery voltage. The limit value for electrical voltage has not been attained, Fault code: A10C16 Fault: The power supply is outside the valid range. This is a very good video. I helps me a lot to understand why there is no power supply to a lot of my devices in my 2013 Mercedes GLK250 after jump start. I suspect I have some fuse blown in the prefuse box. I don't quite understand why it suppose to have continuity between ground contact and the other contacts. In between, there suppose to have a battery, isn't it? Or, do you mean check continuity when the vehicle is turned on?

  • @charlesagha5261
    @charlesagha5261 Před 4 lety +4

    I don't understand the instructions at the beginning. Shouldn't the voltage at the fuse box be 12V? So how can you do a continuity test between HOT 12Vs and battery negative? Wouldn't that result in a short circuit?

    • @ginco_bnz
      @ginco_bnz  Před 4 lety +2

      You are correct, I should have said to disconnect the positive wire and test by connecting the multimeter to the positive battery clamp. However, I think it’s pretty obvious you should completely disconnect, even remove the battery before doing anything involving fuses.
