With my OME banjo, the tailpiece sits on the tension hoop, so when the crown height is wrong (in fact, the top of the tension hoop was below the flat surface of the head!),the tailpiece is too low relative to the flat surface of the head.

The crown height of the head can also affect how the tailpiece sits relative to the surface of the head.

I discovered this the hard way: I had the wrong head crown height, so the tailpiece sat almost flat on the head, muting the sound.
